About Sandy Scotton

My husband and I met in South America, I moved to Alaska in 1994 and our adventures have continued to this day. We built this place while living in a tent on the property in 1999. We got married (on the property) during the summer of construction and lived here for 4 years. We moved across the state for work in an even more remote place, but our hearts still live here! We maintain close relationships with the great folks in Gakona! We have never rented this to tourists before last summer, but as travelers and adventurers ourselves, we know this is an outstanding place to base your Alaskan adventures from! The Wrangell St. Elias National park, the Nabesna Road, McCarthy, and Valdez are all destinations you can reach while staying at our place. Salmon fishing is within two miles!

Sandy Scotton purchased this house in 1999

Why Sandy Scotton chose Alaska

We built it, we got married here, we love the mountains! You will too. Check it out, stay a week! The views from our windows are OUTSTANDING!!

What makes this house unique

You'll have tv and wi-fi, cell phone towers are near-by. There is river rafting and king salmon fishing within minutes on the Gulkana and Klutina Rivers. Just down the road is the best restaurant in the Copper Basin, the historic Carriage House. You will be on the door step of Wrangell St. Elias National Park, the largest park in the nation. We can hook you up with local deals and incredible flightseeing!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hey, this is us.. the owners. We traveled to Gakona with our three kids in early may to make a few improvements to the place and get ready for the summer season. Wow, it was great weather from day 1 to 5 and the Mountains were Spectacular! We installed a new mosquito killing machine, a brand new refrigerator, and put together a new full Sized BBQ grill. The most gratifying part of the trip was reading all the comments left by guests from last year in the book we leave there for that purpose. Virtually everyone loved the place, and commented that the pictures do not do the place justice on the Website. We thank all of our previous guests and hope that folks have a great time in the Copper Basin this year!

I would give 6 stars if I could

This place is absolutely amazing. The pictures can not do it justice. I am in the middle of a 2,000 mile road trip across Alaska right now, staying in very nice places. This is by far the most impressive place that I have stayed at so far. The place is very clean, check in was very easy, and communication was great. I definitely recommend that you stay here. One thing to do before you come is to buy food in a bigger town, because the local shops charge about 50-100% more due to the remoteness. Stay here if you get the opportunity.

Beautiful area, awesome view, not overrun with tourists!

  • 4 of 5

We ended our 9 day tour of the interior with only 2 nights here. Best views of any place we stayed. Love that it is quiet here...few tourists. Local amenities and things to do abound. Cabin has a great wood burning stove, running water,wi-fi and electric. These are bonuses in this part of Alaska. Cool hammock. Bring a sleeping mask if it is summer time! My only issue is I had a real hard time working the TV. There are 2 controllers and neither controlled the volume on the TV. I couldn't find a volume button on the TV. We survived just fine and the TV was a luxury, not a requirement. Bring your bug spray! Beautiful area and great stay. We hope to be back someday!

Owner's Response: Thank you for the kind words! Re-iteration of the astounding views and solitude is always welcome! Sorry about the TV, indeed we had a hard time with the remote at first too. Then we realized the volume toggle was on the SIDE of the remote! Kind of weird and non intuitive. We'll put that in the house directions for future guests. Thanks to everyone for their positive reviews and helpful suggestions! Enjoy Alaska, wherever you stay. Brad

Great get away in a beautiful home!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay! Home is great with a lot of privacy! We saw a moose cow with two babies down below near the river from the bluff above. Loved the fire pit and hammock on the evenings. Thankful for the mosquito vacation too!

Awesome Alaskan Rental

  • 5 of 5

We made a last minute decision to book this place for the weekend to celebrate my birthday and we absolutely loved it. Just as the description says - it's got everything you need. The owners are also super friendly and very responsive.

The only downside to our stay was the mosquitos. They were out in full force with a vengeance so we couldn't enjoy a campfire but we were so busy 4wheeling it made up for it. Loved that we could ride all over the place from this property.

Total privacy and comfort

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay! Sandy and Brad were very quick to respond to emails and provide great recommendations of things to do nearby. The house is very comfortable, cozy, and incredibly private. Definitely go down the street to Carriage House Restaurant for a true local's experience. Otherwise, we enjoyed cooking our meals in the kitchen, which has an excellent view of the mountains. My only suggestion would be to bring your own toiletries (bath soap, shampoo, etc.) since they weren't provided in the house. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place, and we look forward to returning!

We live 500 miles away, but our neighbors (who lived in this house for 2 years) are on the 3 acres next door, and they will be your local hosts and deal with any issues or concerns. Leann will make sure your stay is all that you hope for, and we will be available by phone or email whenever needed. She is available to greet you and offer you some opportunities to experience the "local" culture and ensure your stay is as comfortable as possible.
