About Sandy Scotton

My husband and I met in South America, I moved to Alaska in 1994 and our adventures have continued to this day. We built this place while living in a tent on the property in 1999. We got married (on the property) during the summer of construction and lived here for 4 years. We moved across the state for work in an even more remote place, but our hearts still live here! We maintain close relationships with the great folks in Gakona! We have never rented this to tourists before last summer, but as travelers and adventurers ourselves, we know this is an outstanding place to base your Alaskan adventures from! The Wrangell St. Elias National park, the Nabesna Road, McCarthy, and Valdez are all destinations you can reach while staying at our place. Salmon fishing is within two miles!

Sandy Scotton purchased this house in 1999

Why Sandy Scotton chose Alaska

We built it, we got married here, we love the mountains! You will too. Check it out, stay a week! The views from our windows are OUTSTANDING!!

What makes this house unique

You'll have tv and wi-fi, cell phone towers are near-by. There is river rafting and king salmon fishing within minutes on the Gulkana and Klutina Rivers. Just down the road is the best restaurant in the Copper Basin, the historic Carriage House. You will be on the door step of Wrangell St. Elias National Park, the largest park in the nation. We can hook you up with local deals and incredible flightseeing!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hey, this is us.. the owners. We traveled to Gakona with our three kids in early may to make a few improvements to the place and get ready for the summer season. Wow, it was great weather from day 1 to 5 and the Mountains were Spectacular! We installed a new mosquito killing machine, a brand new refrigerator, and put together a new full Sized BBQ grill. The most gratifying part of the trip was reading all the comments left by guests from last year in the book we leave there for that purpose. Virtually everyone loved the place, and commented that the pictures do not do the place justice on the Website. We thank all of our previous guests and hope that folks have a great time in the Copper Basin this year!

Spectacular views and real Alaskan home

  • 5 of 5

I've been coming to the Copper River country for about 15 years. The house is truly representative of the area with beautiful views and the opportunity for quiet off the well-travelled road. The kitchen was fully stocked with a view from the dining room table. I'm looking forward to coming back.

Beautiful cabin-felt at home

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was in a great location-private and still close enough to town to grab a few things at the store. It felt cozy and had plenty of blankets. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen was nice and spacious. We enjoyed our time here. The owners were very helpful and easy to communicate with. Would definitely stay here again.

Fantastic view!

  • 4 of 5

The view of Mt Drum was the best feature of this vacation rental. The house itself is spacious but there is insufficient lighting especially in the kitchen area (the light fixture above the kitchen sink needs to be replaced).

Although classified as 2 bedroom the second bedroom is an open spaced hence little privacy. The directions to the property needs to be updated.

Great cabin with amazing Copper River and mountain view!

  • 5 of 5

This cabin had everything we needed and was very clean. Great views inside and out. We even missed the mosquitoes! I would recommend exploring the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. We hiked the Rambler Mine Trail and Trail Creek Trail off the Nabesna Road (north side) one day and drove to the end of the McCarthy road to hike the Wagon Road to Kennecott. Take time to view the historic mill town and mines! I would definitely recommend staying here!

We live 500 miles away, but our neighbors (who lived in this house for 2 years) are on the 3 acres next door, and they will be your local hosts and deal with any issues or concerns. Leann will make sure your stay is all that you hope for, and we will be available by phone or email whenever needed. She is available to greet you and offer you some opportunities to experience the "local" culture and ensure your stay is as comfortable as possible.
