About George "Mike" Todd

My principle business is construction. I started my business, Premiere Contractors, Inc., as a Historic Restoration Contractor in 1989. I am a lifetime community activist, and was President of the Cooper-young Neighborhood from '89 thru 91'. Its' renaissance began to come to fruition in '91 with the creation of the Cooper-Young Festival, which is now the largest community festival in the U.S. The Cooper Young Neighborhood is now in "The Top 10 Inner-city Neighborhoods in the country". (If you're in town in late September you must check it out, less than 5 miles from your loft). My love for old buildings brought me Downtown. I began purchasing property in the rundown commercial area in 1994, which had been ravaged by "white-flight" after Dr. King's shooting here in 1968. This eclectic community once hosted the early 20th century auto industry, and was known as "Automobile Row". It is rumored that Johnny Cash once worked at the Hudson dealership, which was my first purchase, located at 629 Monroe. The retro 30's showroom, Premiere Palace Ballroom, is where we now house events every weekend. (Our custom cabinetry and furniture shop is located in the old service department, and there is a funky-cool artist live/work space in the old parts department). In the late 90's, through an unlikely partnership of artists, car service businesses, and our lone watering hole we formed "The Edge District", which I coined the name and tagline "The Heart of Memphis, at the Edge of Downtown". I became its' first President, a position I hold now in rotation, and the neighborhood began to ignite. I went thru some tough times in the recession, as the neighborhood and we all did, and we lost some momentum. However, through Blessings and hard work, we survived. We now own (8) buildings in the neighborhood. I passionately work to maintain and improve them. "The Edge" is definitely on the rise. Perseverance in times of adversity brings strength, wisdom, and insight. Embrace It!

George "Mike" Todd purchased this apartment in 1997

Why George "Mike" Todd chose Memphis

I was always interested in 656 Madison, it was the home of a local grocery distributor who lived in the roof top apartment. He retired and sold his business to his trusted managers. After 2 years, they grew the business to the point that they needed to move to a larger facility. I was contacted by the Owner's representative, who new I was a property owner in the area. The Owner was interested in maintaining some retirement income, so I was able to buy it w/owner financing. We immediately began to improve the building and turn it into a multi-use facility, which now houses (4) live work spaces, a screen print shop, Arepa y Salsa, a Venezuelan restaurant, and the renovated apartment that we are now offering on VRBO.

What makes this apartment unique

I loved the history of the property, which was originally the home to the city's largest dry cleaners from the 30's to the 80's. The building is extremely well built and actually housed a bomb shelter in the "Cold War" days. It offered me the size and ability to divide it into several exciting uses, like we have now.

(IN YOUR IMMEDIATE AREA). This Edgy Downtown Neighborhood is literally called "The Edge District". Nestled in the Birthplace of Rock and Roll, feet from Sun Studio, St. Blues Guitar, the Heartbreak Hotel, and Phillips Recording Studio you are located in "The Heart of Memphis, at the Edge of Downtown". This eclectic community once hosted the early 20th century auto industry, and was known as "Automobile Row". It is rumored that Johnny Cash once worked at the Hudson dealership, located at 629 Monroe, which is now a retro-30's events facility. A former auto parts distributor at 598 Monroe now houses High Cotton Brewery, the pride of Memphis Beer. The Wonder Bread Factory filled the air w/the smell of baking bread for over 1/2 a century. It closed during the recession, but is now in waiting to be re-purposed as a mixed-use residential facility. This healthy urban district still has an active car service industry, and multiple traditional businesses working in concert w/ emerging bio-technologies firms. The Urban Land Institute has designated "The Edge" as an Innovation District, and the neighborhood is working w/the Medical Center, the City, and private developers to drive The Edge forward, while retaining its' diverse heritage.

ABSOLUTELY PERFECT

  • 5 of 5

First of all, Becky and Mike are the sweetest people ever. They personally met is to let us in and worked with our timing even though it was before 3pm. The property was incredible, I can't stop telling people about it. The whole rooftop to yourself! Everything was clean and nice, the beds were comfortable, and there is so much room! I can't say enough good things about this place so if you're considering staying, you will not regret it.

I would give 4.75 stars if possible.

Almost everything about this place was great! The location is super close to downtown, the owners are very well organized and SUPER friendly. They even provided us with snacks! Check-in/check- out was simple and efficient. We truly had a wonderful stay in Memphis with the guys celebrating our "10 year high school reunion".

The only complaint that I heard from any of my party was that the bunk beds (only two people had to sleep there) were uncomfortable. Aside from that, epic place to checkout downtown Memphis with a large group.

Unbelievable property!

  • 5 of 5

Eight women headed to Memphis in search of a fun girls weekend. This unique house was a great start to an unforgettable weekend. Three bedrooms, two sets of bunk beds, a pull out bed, air mattresses, two living rooms, huge kitchen and an outdoor space big enough to do cartwheels. We even did yoga and other workouts on the patio.

A pool table will keep you busy while your friends are getting ready, or if your having a few drinks before a night on the town.

There is a garage large enough to hold two cars, and uber rides to Beale street are around $6.00.

We took a short walk to Mollie Fontaine's for dinner, and you should add this to your "things to do in Memphis" list.

The hospitality of the owners is unlike any other rental I have stayed. This is more than a home away from home!

Fantastic Space and Location

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at this fabulous apartment! There is a ton of space. The bedrooms are comfortable, the bathrooms are nice, and the apartment has everything you need (blow dryers, clothing iron, etc). While you need to do your own grocery shopping (as expected) many staples are already included such as condiments, coffee, sugar, cooking spray. It is clear Becky and Mike know what they're doing and do it very well!

The location is very convenient. An Uber downtown was something like $7. It also seems to be fairly isolated from neighbors that would be bothered by noise. We had a dance party one night and never felt like we might be disturbing someone.

If I was coming back to Memphis, especially with a group, I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

I highly recommend staying here (except for The Beale Street Music Festival because we have it booked in perpetuity🤣). Large, immaculate, greet location, easily accommodates large groups. See you next May!
