Don't be fooled by five star reviews!

  • 1 of 5

Overall, we were a bit disappointed in this property. With five stars and 18 reviews we had very high expectations. Despite ongoing renovations, the place was run down and needing basic upkeep. For example, the refrigerator door was missing the handle and the hardware on the kitchen cabinets was loose or disconnected. The dishwasher was extremely noisy and only ran on the pots setting. There weren't even enough cereal bowls for a family of four. If there was wifi, the password was unavailable. The kayak had a leak that left my husband quickly paddling back to shore. Expect to be charged extra for pets and late check out and for the towels outside the shower to have a note that they are "too cute to use." Are the house guests unworthy of the towels? The view from the house would be stunning, if you could see through the windows! Our stay left me genuinely confused about who had actually written the five star reviews. Despite the shortcomings, the small lake was quite lovely and the neighborhood was quiet.

Owner's Response: Wow, really, one star but not surprising from this particular guest....Kitchen is getting renovated next and is actually the only thing left to renovate and appreciate this guest letting us know every little thing that needs attention since they were stuck in the house due to continuous rain all weekend which owner already knows and is renovating home, actually whole kitchen is ordered, waiting to get put in but this house is booked non-stop since Memorial weekend with happy guests. I will check out the bowls at the home but I know there are 4-5 big bowls and 3-4 little bowls in that kitchen, top shelf above microwave already, must've not seen those. There is no leak in kayak, just had water in it since it rained all week & wkd.. Also pets were supposed to be mentioned at booking stage but this guest who addressed herself as Dr. B but anonymous, really? for this review, especially when you are bringing a bird and a dog in a house you are renting &you mention that you bring your dog everywhere with you & just letting manager know a day before check in, Bad manners. House has no wi-fi and never advertised it as having wi-fi so another detailed ignored which is posted at the home & on website link.. There is free wi-fi located at the park/pavilion/pool area which is posted at the home also. A couple of the windows in the living room have the seal broken which alters the view a tad, not much though but that is another item getting replaced eventually but this home is continaully booked with 95% 4-5 star leaving guests so not sure what you are assuming/implying but actual guests who have stayed at the home who left the reviews just like what you are doing but they leave their names but you are anonymous?! for some strange reason but keep in mind this review & reply follows your profile online, thankfully:-) Be positive, life is short. You would not have gotten lost if you would have read the 3 emails giving the exact directions to the home plus the directions are on the rental agreement as I am all about communication but none of my phone calls were returned,How come? I know the weather was bad for your stay and the fact that you didn't follow my directions to the home which left you lost when you arrived probably set you off & with the non stop rain, you took it out on the house sadly. The sticky note near the towels were from the previous guest admiring them and they thought they were too cute to use, I just forgot to take the note away, sorry!

A nice stay

  • 3 of 5

This chalet house was very nice, roomy, and pet friendly. The owner was very responsive and provided lots of things to do in the area and answered all questing very quickly. My only complaint was that a neighbor across the lake was using a circular saw to cut metal at 8am every morning of our stay. It was a horrible screeching sound that made it impossible to sleep in or sit on the great deck and enjoy coffee. We had to leave the house to get peace and quiet. Returning from the days hike, you can hear the ATVs running and every conversation across the lake. This is not the property owners fault, but keep in mind that sound travels. Also, the fridge's handle needs to be fixed otherwise you have to claw at it to open. The property is on a beautiful wooded land with gorgeous lake view. Sunsets were very pretty. The Pigeon River State Park has wonderful hiking trails, lakes and scenery. Saw lots of turkey, deer and hawks.

Owner's Response: I'm glad overall these people enjoyed the house and amenities and the fact being pet friendly especially accommodating their pet(s) A house on the lake nearby was just putting in new windows unfortunately and it happened to be the time during your stay and I apologize about that and appreciate you observing also that it definately is not the owners fault nor the home having an issue so thank you for mentioning that. Just a neighbor updating their home and putting in new windows since they live down state and come up once in a great while to do remodeling on their cottage when they can come up north. I own Bear's Den down the road which situates closer to the home putting in windows making the noise but they did not mention to me about the noise, just what a great time they had. We are in an all sports area so coming up north, you will have to expect hearing ATV's, Boat Motors, snowmobiles, etc, maybe consider a home tucked in the woods with no neighbors but what are you going to do? I'm sure there will be no amenities such as what this home supplies. I would not want to sleep in on my time up north, that's for sure! Regarding the refrigerator handle, the whole kitchen will be renovated and all appliances will be replaced with new appliances and It's actually not that bad it's just like opening a cupboard where there's no handles or knobs which a few of my homes have no knobs and/or handles on cupboards. The refrigerator does serve the purpose of keeping food cold, beverages cold and freezer items frozen but I do apolgoize for inconvenience of having to open refrigerator on the side. I can assure future guests that eventually, they will have a brand new refrigertor coming soon....the house is so busy with guests coming and going since it's so popular. There's nothing wrong with updating houses though and everyone can appreciate that a neighbor is making their house look good for everyone giving it curb appeal, just bad timing.

Clean accommodations. Lots to do. Access to Lake Otsega.

Owner's Response: I'm glad these guests liked the clean home with lots to do as this home gets repeat guests all the time and is going through a renovation too so house is almost totally updated. We are close to Otsego Lake which is roughly 8 miles away....we have access the Lake Arrowhead all sports lake just across the road is probably what this guest meant as Otsego Lake is not in this neighborhood but this home is on a lake but just a no wake lake, no motor boats allowed but the all sports lake is just across the road so guests can have access to that lake also:-)

Great getaway for peace and relaxation

  • 5 of 5

Great place to step away from the hustle and bustle. Nice, quiet setting with all the amenities that you could ask for during a vacation. Verizon cell service is spotty at best, but a quick walk to the community pool gives both cell service and wifi access. Setting is very kid and pet friendly, so this made for a perfect family vacation spot.

Perfect Family Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at the Little Bear Hideaway with our son, daughter-in-law and 2 grandsons. The house was well laid out for us with a bedroom/bath upstairs for us and 2 bedrooms and a bath on the main level for the kids/grandkids. The basement was a cool retreat on hot afternoons and having laundry facilities was a godsend! The boys caught their fill (both literally and figuratively) of blue gills right off the dock and we rented the pontoon boat for one day on the larger lake where we caught some nice bass and pike. Dorene and John were great hosts! We'd definitely go back.

Owner's Response: I'm glad these guests enjoyed themselves as everyone who stays in this home absolutely loves it as there has never been anyone who has stayed here that had anything negative or bad to say as this home is strictly set up as a home away from home with extras and home is 90% updated moreso than the average person's home they live in year 'round.....and we are in the middle of just about any type of day trip excursion imaginable or just stay home as there is PLENTY to do right on the property or in neighborhood.....check out Little Bear Hideaway!
