Your Sunny Home Away From Home-One Block From Downtown

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,900 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 7 nights

About the property

3 Bedrooms, 2 Full Baths, Furnished Patio, Fully Fenced Yard

This lovingly restored 1951 home is located just one block from charming downtown Saugatuck--on The Hill, a leafy residential neighborhood where you'll feel like a local. Walk to shops, galleries, cafes, pubs, a day spa, a yoga studio, a playground, and the harbor boardwalks. Rent a bike and explore picturesque neighborhoods, country roads, and our world famous coastline. If you've never seen a Great Lake, you'll swear you've stumbled upon the sea, but--no salt, no sharks, no worries. Relax on the most beautiful beaches anywhere.

Perfect for eco-conscious travelers. The whole property is maintained without the use of any toxic chemicals, inside and out, and we make it easy to recycle and compost, if you'd like to.

Inside, relax in the living room, dining room, den/bedroom (with French doors), and eat-in kitchen, which all flow together, plus three bedrooms and two full baths. We collect art and books and have filled the rooms with both. This is our second home and we want you to be comfortable and have fun while traveling light. You'll arrive to find everything clean and made up for you, so all you have to do is unpack. Kick off your shoes and settle in!

Outside, lounge in the shade or sun of the large lush fenced yard while the kids climb around in the treehouse with slide. Fire up the charcoal grill on the furnished patio.

You'll find a basement laundry and detached garage (for storage, not parking). The yard is entirely enclosed--by a 3- to 4-foot picket fence on three sides and a six-foot privacy fence on the fourth.

Bike rentals are available nearby and the Interurban (a shuttle bus service) is on-call for short trips around town. You'll want a car for family trips to the beach with gear, but note that it's just a three-mile bike ride, and it's also walkable if you're up for an adventure that includes crossing the river on the chain ferry.

We supply bed, bath, and kitchen linens, basic soaps, and enough paper products to get you started. Don't forget your beach towels and sunscreen!

We're available by phone when you need us, and often in person on checkin and checkout days. Please note that this is our second home and we're looking for travelers who will enjoy it and treat it with care.

Our house is frequently described as the best location in town. We think that it's the next best thing to being right on the beach--and you can head downtown without looking for a parking space. We maintain both the yard and the house without using any dangerous chemicals--and this has been true for 19 years. Also, we make it easy for you to recycle and compost, if you'd like.

Wonderful Home Away

  • 5 of 5

This home has been lovingly kept ... in fantastic shape, super clean and well thought out for guests. The location could not have been more perfect to walk to everything in Saugatuck.

Adorable house in a perfect location!

  • 5 of 5

I stayed with three girlfriends for a weekend. We could not have been happier with the house! The location was walking distance from downtown and the water. We especially had a fun time at Black Walnut restaurant, which is very close to the house. Alison made everything extremely easy and convenient. The house is clean, spacious, and there are helpful notes and reminders for guests. I highly recommend staying there!

Loved the house! The owner was wonderful to work with from the start. The location of the home is ideal. A very clean and cozy place to relax in. We would rent the home again in a hot minute.

Great House That Checks All The Boxes!

  • 5 of 5

This is a great house that met all of our criteria: excellent location near the town, fenced-in yard for the kids, plenty of space for our family of five plus a few guests, clean and well maintained, responsive owners, and all at a fair price!

We've visited Saugatuck for four years now, each time staying in a different home. We've never returned to one of our rentals the following year. Well, that trend comes to an end next summer as we plan to have another great vacation at Ethel's house. We highly recommend this property!

What a charming, clean and organized house in a great location!

  • 5 of 5

Ethel's house was such a beautiful home. It was more than enough space for our family of 4 and my parents as well. The home had the original charm from the 1950's but had many modern amenities and upgrades and paint colors. It seemed like the house was recently painted. Upon initial entrance, we all observed how clean and fresh it felt. The bed and bath linens were very nice and comfy, the kitchen was very well stocked (we ate in a lot with two little boys, and they loved all of the kids cups and plates!). I was surprised to see many nightlights as well, again very helpful for children. And so many books! I wish I could have enjoyed them more but we were on the go quite a bit. The children's books came in very handy for putting the kids to bed. The bedroom on the main floor was really nice for my parents since steps are tough for my mom. The yard was fantastic. Since it was fenced in and spacious, I felt very safe with kids running around while we were inside for a few minutes. The hammock was amazing. The location was probably the best location you can get in that neighborhood. It was literally one block from the shops and restaurants. We would get up in the morning and go to the coffee shop (Uncommon Grounds - our favorite coffee shop ever) and bring back coffee. It was so easy. It was nice to be close with little ones as well, for quick trips downtown to get ice cream or to the playground, etc. Also, throughout the stay, Alison was always readily available for my quick questions, it was so helpful. I honestly can't say enough about this property (and the owners). It exceeded our expectations. I would highly recommend!

Beautiful Home in Perfect Location

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time staying at this beautiful home. There is plenty of room inside and a large, gated yard outside to play, grill & have a bonfire. The location is perfect with a kids park only a block away and a short walk to the downtown area. We had a great time and hope to be back soon!

About Alison

We managed this home as a VRBO vacation rental from 2004-2007, with many return renters, so rest assured, we'll take good care of you. I'm a proud native of the Great Lakes State, eager to share our beautiful town and lakeshore with you. My family and I have had the good fortune to call Saugatuck our year-round home for most of the last 20 years. Now, we're happy to spend part of our time in this one-of-a-kind Great Lakes treasure: Saugatuck.

Alison purchased this house in 1997

Why Alison chose Saugatuck

We love Lake Michigan and its magical shoreline. Saugatuck is home to some of the most beautiful sand dunes in the world: forested, grassy, and, of course, sandy! The beaches have been voted the most beautiful in the world: no salt, sharks, no worries. Our town is friendly, fun, and loaded with charm and unique places to shop, dine, relax, and explore. You can be as relaxed or as energetic as you like.

What makes this house unique

From the refurbished 1950s kitchen to the bedroom built-ins to the vintage bathroom tile to the glossy pine and oak floors to the profusion of large windows, there is nothing cookie-cutter about this house, and you can watch the world go by from the lush fenced yard. Lake Michigan is just a 5-minute drive away and downtown is so close by even toddlers can walk there. In fact, the playground is a block away, and the beloved Saugatuck Drugstore with an old-fashioned soda fountain is just a block farther.
