About the property

Markwell Farm Cottages

Markwell Farm is situated about 1.5 miles from Landrake village and the A38. Easily accessible, it is reached just 5 miles after crossing the River Tamar at Plymouth. Its quiet location affords superb views over rolling countryside with the spectacular St Germans viaduct and the River Tiddy as its centrepiece. The farm, which is 400 acres, has suckler cows and a large sheep flock as well as growing arable crops. Of course there are also a collection of dogs, cats, ponies, goats, llamas and pet lambs to greet you and make friends with. Two adjoining 18th century barns have been tastefully converted into 4 cottages each sleeping between 2 and 6 people. Offering high quality, self-catering accommodation in a tranquil location but within easy reach of the best that Cornwall has to offer. Children are welcome and we can accept dogs in some of the cottages. While it is a commercially run farm, features have been enhanced to ensure that visitors are able to enjoy their stay to the full. Find Markwell Farm on Google.

The 4 cottages are all tastefully furnished in antique pine and each have their own unique characteristics.

Markwell Farm: Visitors are encouraged to walk round the farm and enjoy the views and the animals. There is plenty of space for children to play.

Look out for the Buzzards and the deer, listen for the owls at night.

Here at Markwell we have a 40 cow suckler beef herd which calves in the spring and a large sheep flock. The flock is made up mainly of commercial breeds but we do have a few Zwarble sheep with their stunning black fleeces and white faces.

Also on the farm we have a collection of vintage tractors which range in age from 1926 to 1960. We will be happy to show them to you.

Beaches: South East Cornwall enjoys some lovely sandy beaches. From the small villages of Kingsand and Cawsand to the rock pools of Downderry and Seaton. At low tide there is a large stretch of sand at Whitsand Bay, though the walk back up is a bit steep. Looe combines the beach for the children with the shops and wonderful cream teas.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Just wanted to drop you a quick note to say we really enjoyed our stay last week in The Granary. We left fairly early so we could visit the Monkey Sanctuary in Dorset on our way home.

Again thanks so much we had a great time and my Emily loved being able to walk to see the goats, horses and sheep each evening.

I thoroughly enjoyed my single stay at the Stable. Very Rural, lovely walks without keep getting in the car. The whole family made me very welcome and I enjoy being amidst the working part of farm life...…... I will be back!

Great location; property a bit tired and grubby

  • 3 of 5

Beautiful setting, great view and so peaceful. Host welcomed us with lovely cream tea. However property and 'garden' were rather tired and run down. Weeds in garden pots, skirting boards dirty, cobwebs from beams, shower and tiles spoiled by dirty discoloured grout. Perhaps as was early in season we stayed before the major clean up of the year? Such a shame, as the setting and area were stunning.

Owner's Response: We're sorry to read that you weren't happy with your accommodation. The cottage was thoroughly cleaned before you arrived (including the skirting boards) and there were no cobwebs - though being an old building they do seem to reappear quickly. We had just finished lambing, which takes most of our time for about 6 weeks, and the weather had been too wet to stain all the outside woodwork, which was done as soon as conditions improved. With regard to the plant tubs - all the new planted up tubs were in the greenhouse but it was far to cold to put them out as there were still night frosts. As we live less than 50m from the cottages, you could have come and discussed this with us and we may have been able to explain or sort any problems. On your morning of departure you left without speaking to us and when we went to clean the cottage we were horrified to find the carpets, rugs, sofa, throws and bedding covered in dog hairs. We were disappointed to find our cottage in such a dirty condition then find a poor review of our cleanliness. We take a pride in our cottages but they are in an old building on a working farm.

The cottage was clean and very comfy

  • 4 of 5

The view, wow. You will not get bored of it. Allison and her family were very friendly and welcoming. If you want peace and quiet, being able to hear the birds and countryside sounds, this is the place. Easy to reach popular places and out of the way sites. We will happily visit and stay here again.

Fantastic family cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic week on Markwell Farm. Our 6 & 3 year old were desperate to meet Knuckles the cat (we'd looked on the website & Facebook and seen all the animals)! The farm was easy to find down a long, pretty country lane. We stayed at the Dairy, which was spacious, clean and very comfortable. The beds were perfect and we all slept very well - the children loved the teddies on their beds and it made it feel like home from home. Allison greeted us with a delicious cream tea and homemade apple juice! The children loved exploring the farm, meeting the goats, horses, Honey the Lab puppy and 'driving' the tractor! The view is spectacular and the area was so peaceful. We were very lucky and had great weather. We visited many places that were very easy to reach: Mawgan Porth beach, Watergate Bay, Tintagel Castle, Mevagissy and Polperro. I wouldn't hesitate to stay again at Markwell Farm and Allison and her daughter were always friendly and happy to help. Thanks for everything!

Wonderful place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We stayed her for a week and had an absolutely wonderful stay. The Granary is a nice and cozy appartment with an amazing view. The bed I slept in was very comfortable. The peacefulness of the place is relaxing. The animals are a major plus when you have kids. My 10 year old daughter had a hard time lsaying goodbye to all the lambs, who she had been allowed to feed by bottle.

It is also near Plymouth, Cotele, Looe (beach) and other day trip activities.

Allison welcomed us with an Cornish tea. She is very friendly woman. The fresh eggs and the home made apple juice are delicious.

I can certainly recommend a stay at Markwell Farm.

The beaches of Whitsand Bay and the smuggling villages of Looe & Polperro are less than 10 miles away.Seaton is a safe beach for children to play, about 8 miles away. Carp fishing is available on site, with other sites locally, along with horse riding, sailing and windsurfing. Plymouth is home to the National Marine Aquarium, The Pavilions (ice skating, swimming & theatre), museums. Local activities for children include The Donkey Park, Bodmin & Wenford Steam railway. A little further afield is Trethorne Leisure park, The Lobster hatchery at Padstow, Ben's play world at St Austell, not forgetting the Eden Project and The Lost gardens of Heligan which are about 40 minutes away.

Other Activities: clay pigeon shooting, dry skiing, health club/gym, canoeing, boat trips & sea fishing
