The national museum of prehistory, only 30 minutes away in Les Eyzies, provides a good starting point. Entrance is free on the first Sunday of every month. Within easy range, too, are chateaux and bastides – medieval fortified towns – which mark turning points of history, from Viking and English domination, to the resistance of the French Protestants.
