Here is a review from one of our happy guests

“Very good location to explore the Volcano national park Excellent value for money - the apartment is very spacious, was very clean and has all the facilities we needed. Well worth the price".- Karen

Comments were made about the presence of musty air in our home, this was a bit upsetting and resulted in a thorough investigation and the hiring of a professional. We are happy to say this matter has been successfully dealt with and once again there is nothing but fresh, clean, nice smelling air, in our vacation rentals".

Clean and excellant accomodations. We enjoyed the proximity to Volcano National Park, gasoline and restaurants. Exceeded our expectations. It is very spacious. Humidifier and heaters made our stay comfy.

I would recommend this property to others, very affordable, and would stay again.

Excellant customer service.

  • 4 of 5

Okay for price

  • 2 of 5

As the other reviews state, the furnishings and cooking utensils need upgraded. The damp and musty smell was better when we ran the dehumidifier. Really could use queen beds. The television issue was resolved while we were there. The price is lower than most rentals in the Volcano area, and the location was ideal for us. With a few upgrades, this could be a very nice place.

I for one can NOT complaint about the fact that this a basement conversion that is damp and musky, has a lack of doors/privacy, substandard HOT water and cheap/thrift store furniture.

The reason I can NOT complaint about this is that: THE OWNER TOOK MY MONEY, NEVER GAVE CLEAR DIRECTIONS WHERE TO FIND THIS PLACE AND . . . AFTER I EMAILING TWICE, AND CALLING BOTH THE 808# (manger?) AND THE 707# (owner?) I STILL HAVE NOT HEARD FROM ANYONE . . . NOT THAT NIGHT OR MORE THAN A WEEK LATER! I know that the phone number I gave them was working because I used it both to call out and I received calls while in Volcano.

I did find a nice place to stay . . . after seven P.M., when it was dark, cold and raining. When asked about what went wrong the second B&B owner’s remarked that there were “A LOT OF AMATEURS” on the VRBO site that made it difficult for the professionals.

AND the owner and manager (who ever that is) can NOT say that I should have called! These people should get OUT OF A BUSINESS THEY KNOW NOTHING ABOUT!

Musty and damp

  • 1 of 5

We chose this property because it was close to the National Park. We definitely did not think it was worth the $$. We booked for three nights but only managed one! It smelt so bad that we had to go find somewhere else for our family to stay! The beds were really small for two people and the furnishings very old and basic! Initially we couldn't even find the key to get in and then the WIFI had no password supplied. The owner was really hard to reach and we had to find a payphone ( from Australia) and make many calls and waste money trying to get answers! We couldn't get the TV to work and the owners couldn't help with this.

We rent out a cottage at home so had certain basic expectations which were not met by this property. We ended up staying in Hilo which is an easy drive to the park and much more pleasant.

For extreme bargain hunters only

  • 1 of 5

Unwilling to pay the crazy high prices for most rentals near Volcanoes Nat'l Park, I found this little bargain. Read the description and look at the photos carefully. What you see in the photos is exactly what you get. This rental is the furnished basement of a larger home. As one reviewer noted, and is clear from the floor plan, there is only a partial wall that separates one bed from the other two. Also note that the beds are FULL size beds, not queen and definitely not king. If you're over 6 ft, your feet will dangle off the bed!

The unit is clean, but musty and damp. It's close to the road so you hear any cars driving by. The furniture and furnishings are what you would find in a second hand store or in your grandparent's home if they haven't updated anything since the 70's. Only enough hot water for one shower. Bring your own soap. There were bottles of shampoo and conditioner but I suspect they were left behind by a previous visitor.

A new flat screen TV has replaced the old one in the photo, but no cable TV, just local channels. There are no instructions to finding them so here you go. Enter the channel you want using the numerical buttons on the remote. The channel up/down buttons on the remote or the TV yields nothing but snow. I discovered this after I had called the owner, whose response was "I don't know what to say about that". Nice guy but clueless. Offered to let us use the TV upstairs but we had already started a game of cards against humanity. That was definitely not provided, we brought it and no, we didn't leave it behind for you.

I would rate the unit higher if it wasn't for the owner. The mix matched furniture and small beds are easily forgiven, but an owner that clearly doesn't care for the comfort of his guests is not. Soap and hot water are the bare minimum for any host. There are great owners on VRBO who go above and beyond to ensure a great stay for their guests. You won't find that here, so take your business elsewhere.

Owner's Response: Aloha, Good reviews can certainly enhance a businesses success, therefore we are surprised by your review, and wish you would have contacted us directly so we can address these issues and concerns for the comfortable stays of our future guests. Also we tried to be as descriptive as possible in the fact that this home is shared with upstairs guests, as we are just now making it open as another rental vs just one guest renting the whole home, and just using the top unit. There are wall partitions between the rooms as shown in the description. Perhaps we should list it as a studio? We will think about this idea. And yes Shampoo/conditioner, towels and linens are always provided for our guests, as well as the contact information of our on-call housecleaner which is always available to assist guests with anything they need, as how to work the TV etc. We will also take to heart and do appreciate the improvements you have suggested and I will pass them on to the housecleaner and homeowners.
