We would love to share our 'Up North' getaway with people who
appreciate a well kept home with full amenities. As you stroll down
our winding driveway, watch for the deer and wildlife in the woods.
When you're finished taking in the view of Lake Michigan and the
Manitou Islands from the living room, step outside to the patio and
head down the boardwalk through the sandy dune grasses and
wildflowers to our own private beach on Sleeping Bear Bay on Lake
Michigan.
Our 4 bedroom, 3 bath home is within walking distance of Glen Arbor
(1/2 mile). The master bedroom, with a lovely view of the lake and
the Manitou Islands, includes a king size bed and a private bath.
Also on the lower level are two other bedrooms, one with two twin
beds and the other with one twin bed, which share a bathroom.
Upstairs is a bedroom with two twin beds, a twin futon (best for young teen or child) and a
bathroom. The home includes new flooring throughout
Thistledown is located 30 minutes from Traverse City, the Cherry
Capital of the Midwest. The Traverse City Airport offers service
from several major airlines. And of course, for your cherry product
needs, walk or bike into town to The Cherry Republic.
Thistledown has been a family home for four generations. The Rands live in Florida and the Washington, DC area, but we love to come back to Glen Arbor and the peaceful views of Lake Michigan and the Manitou Islands. Marcia lives in St. Louis and loves getting together with her family in Glen Arbor. We all enjoy getting together at Thistledown and making memories.
Spencer Rand purchased this house in 1972
Once you come to Thistledown, you will be making lifetime memories. We love sharing it with families who appreciate how special are the Glen Arbor area and Sleeping Bear Bay. We have had family weddings, and many happy announcements of engagements and babies' arrivals at Thistledown.
We hope you will enjoy the views and the location as much as we do. It is just a few yards from the beach of Lake Michigan, yet close enough to walk into town for ice cream or shopping.
2 1/2 year old Clara (our granddaughter) had a wonderful time at Thistledown! A few weeks after arriving back home, she asked her daddy, "Daddy, where's Michigan? I NEED MY Michigan!" Yes, Clara, we all feel that way!
There's nothing like spending a week on the shores of the inland sea (aka, the Great Lakes). We are late autumn / early spring visitors, which means we aren't there for the swimming or biking or fires on the beach. We're there to unwind from our downstate responsibilities, to 'veg' in the comfort of the cushioned chairs in front of the sliding doors that face the Manitou Passage, to read books, watch the freighters, follow the birds (eagles, this time), sample the local wines and try out the restaurants, which range from rustic American to casual upscale.
Whether you're there to lean in or lean out, Thistledown is perfectly situated. It lies halfway between the village of Glen Arbor and the Sleeping Bear sand dunes to the west. It is a classic A frame home kept in excellent shape by the Rands. New additions this year include concrete steps down to the wooden walkway to be beach, and a ceiling fan to keep the air circulating on hot days. Whether you're hot weather people or cold, you can't go wrong at Thistledown.
Yet another month at our 'little slice of heaven'. Absolute perfection !!
Thistledown is a wonderful family cabin. It's got the books of generations of owners, the comfy chairs, the fireplace, everything. Location is perfect for either exploring the area or for staying in and enjoying the lake. The picture shows the situation of the cabin perfectly -- there is a short boardwalk down to the lakeshore, which is sandy and then pebbly.
We stayed there on in early October. Weather was perfect for hikes on the nearby dunes, skipping rocks, kayaking or just watching the lake.
We were a group of 4, so we had beds to spare. Thistledown, like many family cabins, is a place you could sleep a lot more people -- and in the summertime when people were outdoors, that would work just fine. Only a half mile or so from town of Glen Lake, so it was easy to go out to dinner; kids could have a lot of independence which is nice.
The owner is very accommodating, caring and responsive.......The home is comfy, relaxing and equipped with what you need.....and was fortunate to have very good weather the entire stay - probably the best for the season which made the respite that was much needed even more enjoyable luckily. Thank you to Ann & family....for sharing.....!! 😉
Very charming place. Everything was great. Beautiful area and beach. Coming from out of state, would have been convenient to have bath and beach towels available though. Would stay again.
We were very pleased with the location, hospitality & comforts thistledown & its owners offered. We definitely plan to come back in the future.
