About the property

Two bedroomed cottage to sleep 4-6

Doon Cottage is a lovely comfortable home. It has an open fire, stripped wood finishes and an enclosed well-tended south facing garden at the front of the cottage. Both the village shop & pub are within 500 yards. Very pleasantly located on the edge of Twynholm village, close to the lovely Solway coastline and bounded by fields with views east to the hills.

Completely renovated and tastefully furnished, in keeping with the style and character of the cottage. We frequently use the cottage ourselves, which means it is very well equipped and has many comfortable touches throughout.

On the Ground floor there is a large open plan kitchen/dining/sitting room and a lounge with double sofa bed. On the First floor we have 2 bedrooms - 1 double and 1 twin. There is a large secure outhouse attached which is suitable for storing bikes.

All fuel, power & bed linen included. Children are very welcome. High chair provided. Sorry no pets. No smoking. There is parking for 3 cars.

Doon Cottage is 3.5 miles from the historic fishing town of Kirkcudbright which has several coffee shops, restaurants and artists’ galleries. Castle Douglas and Gatehouse of Fleet are 8 and 5 miles away respectively and both offer an alternative range of shops and recreational facilities.

Home away from home

We spent 2 amazing weeks at Doon's Cottage at the beginning of July. We: 2 adults, 2 Teenagers and 1 Toddler. The cottage was very cozy and very well equipped for every occacion: from cooking/baking (we even made scones and cookies one day) to cleaning and entertaining a 2 year-old with lots of toys and gardening tools. We felt very welcome with the freshly picked flower bouquet in the kitchen/dining room. The Garden was great for having breakfast/lunch/dinner and even BBQ outside.

No midgets, the occasional tiny spider (but they mostly kept outside) and all in all a very clean house.

We lucked out with the weather for the most part. it hardly ever rained heavely, just a little drizzling now and then and a couple of really nice sunny summer-days.

There ist lots to do and see around Twynholm/Kirkurdbright/Dumfries: Fish χps in "Kirkurdbree" (as we soon learned), lots of nice Delis in Douglas Castle, Cocoa-bean Factory, Galloway National Forest. Glasgow and the Lake-District about 2 hours away and def. worth a visit. We loved the Brighouse Bay (though def check for Tides) and also explored Twynholm quite a lot: there is a post office, an Auto-Shop (just in case), a Pub (Star-Hotel) and lots of beautiful roses to look at. Since the Lowlands is a very underrated tourist destiny, all the sights we checked out were wonderfully quiet and relaxed, no tourist crowds to compete with for the best spot (well, Glasgow might be an exception here).

For "over-sea-ers" like us: we felt very welcome, everyone was really nice and child-friendly. We loved the Tea and even were brave enough to try Haggies and black Pudding.

It sure wasn't our last time in Scotland and we can def. recommend the cottage for Families of all sizes.

Fantastic Cottage in a Great Location

  • 5 of 5

Having visited the area many times as my wife was originally from the Dumfries region we were aware of what the area had to offer what we didn't realise what a gem of a cottage Twynholm had to offer. The cottage was perfect for our weeks holiday and was exactly as the brochure said. Our party consisted of myself, my wife, our daughter, her husband and two grandchildren. The use of the separate living room and sofa bed was used by myself and my wife, "we pulled the short straw" as they say although not ideal we soon got used to this room as a permanent bedroom. The grandchildren loved the large garden that allowed them to run about play a few games all in total safety. The area has many great attractions to visit with kids, obviously the one in Twynholm the Cocoabean Factory is a must and doesn't charge for adults Dalscone Farm on the A75 in Dumfries is the best the kids said offering indoor and outdoor play areas as well as animals to view. We visited Kippford and had a great meal in the Anchor Inn another great place to eat is Carlos Italian Restaurant in Castle Douglas we were full after the starter! Anyway back to the cottage that is probably the best cottage we have rented for years, everything that you require is there it's not like your normal holiday cottage more like a home you feel comfortable as soon as you arrive. Check the outhouse out the garden furniture is in there as well as the BBQ that we used once during the week and most of all we all enjoy the peace and tranquility of the cottage it was a place to chill as well as enjoy. Weather could have been better but you can't plan that but you can plan on staying in a nice place and this cottage lived up to our plan. Steve you should be proud of the cottage we will be back again even if it is just for a few days visiting relations or another week exploring the area. Thank you for allowing us to stay in your fantastic cottage we wish you all the best for the future and hopefully all the visitors to your cottage will find it as good as we did and leave it in a clean and tidy condition as we found it and hopefully you found it when we departed. First class place to stay if Carling made recommendations they would say " probably the best place to stay in the area"

Beautiful cottage in a gorgeous setting

  • 5 of 5

Really enjoyed our brief few days at this lovely cottage - decorated and furnished very tastefully, and location excellent for getting to the coast at Kirkcudbright (3 miles) and beyond. Spotted the young deer in the field next door, and several red kites circling - what a privilege! Would like to stay longer next time - thanks Steve!
