About Jane

This house has been in our family since 1999 when Jane's parent's purchased it to use as a rental property. Although from the Hudson Valley of New York the family has vacationed on the Delmarva Peninsula for years. Because of our longstanding interest in the area Jane's in-laws started renting properties here too, and now a contingent of over twenty cousins, siblings and other family and friends convene once a year. One sister-in-law has had Pasta Night followed by board games and cards games at her nearby rental for over 25 years. And trivia night, Mexican night and more continue to be family traditions for us all. The house is our center of fun and we welcome and encourage others to use it similarly to strengthen the bonds of family. My two rules for this house are that I must go to the beach every day, and I must play the piano every day.

Jane purchased this house in 1999

Why Jane chose Delaware

This house is so comfortable to be in with its breezy atmosphere and multiple porches. There is a nook for everyone to enjoy. It is a great house for families and for kids.

What makes this house unique

The canal is tough to beat with the opportunities for crabbing, fishing and launching of a small craft. It is a pleasure to simply sit out there and read a book. The screen-in porch gets the most attention it seems since it overlooks the canal and draws folks for breakfast, lunch, dinner, reading, games, crafts, you name it. It is a lovely spot to sit. That porch swing downstairs is pretty terrific also. And besides the pleasure of the bay and the quiet community we can just as easily walk to the ocean and enjoy the thrill of the beach and the water. We get the best of both worlds at this house.

Spacious, comfortable, wonderfully located

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I rented this house for two weeks, and enjoyed every minute. We had various friends and our adult children come to visit for two or three night stays, and the house was perfect to accommodate everyone. The upper floor has two bedrooms with its own full bathroom, and the main floor has two bedrooms with a master bath and another full bath, creating a wonderful sense of privacy. We brought our kayaks, and almost daily put them into the canals from the backyard, from which we could paddle out to the Assawoman Bay inlets and see herons, gulls, and other wildlife. The roads along the canals were wonderful for evening bicycling. Access to the beach was easy. The house is well kept and clean and had everything that we needed for our stay. We plan to return!

Owner's Response: Sounds like you and family took advantage of so much of what our house has to offer! The dock out back is such a delight in so many ways. We enjoy sitting on the screen-in porch and watching ducks and herons and other birds come through. There are occasionally kayakers or other boaters who venture up to our hidden away back yard so we wave to them when they go by. Sometimes we sit in the back yard and enjoy the breeze by the water, or sit directly on the dock in lawn chairs with crabbing lines in the water. Having the canal right out back does add so much to the place. We are delighted you enjoyed yourselves and appreciated all that we do to accommodate our guests. Thanks for staying with us and hope you come again.

Great Beach House for multi-family vacation! Neighborhood is the best-kept secret near Rehoboth!

  • 5 of 5

We rent a house every year with another family so there are 9 of us (4 adults and 5 kids). This was our 2nd year in the area (last year we stayed in loud-crowded-overpriced Rehoboth) and this year was SO much better. We loved this house! Favorite aspects include the neighborhood & location (quiet, pretty, but so close to the beach), the canal, the awesome outdoor shower, the "porch" swing in the backyard, the central air (which works amazingly well), the comfortable beds, the screened in dining porch, the incredibly well-stocked kitchens (plural!), the amount of privacy for each family, and last but not least the friendliness of the owner Jane. She answered all my questions promptly and helped problem-solve when I couldn't find something. We loved the quick, easy bike-ride to Bethany Beach with it's small, uncrowded boardwalk. We could spend the morning at Bethany beach, hit the boardwalk for ice cold drinks and snacks, then head to the house for lunch, and do a different activity in the afternoon (Like kayaking on the canal, or the Bethany Nature Center or Yesterday's Fun Toy Store in Bethany - a unique place!)

So easy to walk or ride bikes to the sweet, local, (never crowded) South Bethany Beach. Also had two awesome sunset dinners on the porch at Captain Mac's in Fenwick Island. Some days we drove to other nearby beaches just for a change of scenery. The state beach under the inlet bridge is really nice! My dream is to stay ON the beach -- still can't afford it -- but if I can't have that. this house is definitely the next best thing.

The ONLY thing I didn't like so much was Resort Quest, the property manager. They were NOT very nice or helpful when we had questions or needed help. :-( I hope they don't take too much commission!

Owner's Response: So glad you had a great time at the Canal House. We pride ourselves in having a well-stocked house that feels like home in its conveniences but not so like home it isn't beachy at the same time. We do try to be responsive as well, if we can, realizing your vacation is best if roadblocks to it are minimized. Glad you were able to take advantage of so much the area has to offer as well as the house and neighborhood particularly. We hope you return and make it a tradition to enjoy the Canal House in South Bethany Beach. Our off-season rates are terrific so consider coming at another time of year for maybe a smaller family get-away as well. Many thanks for sharing your thoughts. Jane

Spacious and Thoughtfully Appointed

  • 5 of 5

Friends from North Carolina have joined our Pennsylvania family at Canal House every summer for many years. It is spacious and thoughtfully appointed, well suited for groups of 8 to 12. But if you wish to slip away for a bit, there are porches, and decks where you can enjoy a book or a nap. When the children were little, the ground floor family room was "their" space. If you have little ones, you will find a nice selection of toys and books and even a piano stocked with song books.

We prefer to dine in, which is easy because the kitchen is well equipped. We especially appreciate the second refrigerator on the top floor in a room that might be called the in-law suite.

You'll find beach chairs, bicycles and boogie boards in the garage.

We are already looking forward to our return.

Owner's Response: We are so glad you enjoy returning to Canal House every year and that it has become a tradition for your family. Thank you very much for allowing us to provide a meeting place for all of you. We are readers in our family, so indeed there are many books in the house and many places to enjoy reading them! We don't mind if our guests borrow a book or contribute a new one. By the way, there is a new Free Little Library right down the street where the community shares books. It's the size of a breadbox and stands just outside the town hall. Check it out!

great place to stay for vacation

  • 5 of 5

We had fun at this house for a week. We got some little crabs in the canal, saw a jellyfish, and caught some fish. The decks were so nice to sit on no matter what level it was. The couches were so comfy plenty of naps were spent there. Everything was so neat and organized. Also the community was very quiet and relaxing. All in all this was a beautiful house and vacation. Thank you

Owner's Response: Thanks for your comments. We are delighted you had a good time, and particularly that you enjoyed the canal out back. For fourth of July every year the town hosts a boat parade featuring decorated vessels of all sizes that proceeds up and down the canals to throngs of onlookers who line the banks. This year an 'under the sea' themed boat won with the 'Washington crossing the Delaware' themed boat coming in second. Loads of fun and a unique feature of our canal community. We hope you enjoyed our place enough to come again as you were wonderful guests.

Still Great Year After Year!

  • 5 of 5

Canal House was as comfortable as always but with some nice improvements! We continue to enjoy the multiple gathering spaces that bring our group close together for eating, relaxing, and playing games. The kitchen has plenty of supplies to cook and bake with and the second kitchen upstairs with a full-sized fridge was nice to keep all of our drinks cold. The outdoor shower's new changing area was a nice addition for getting clean after the beach.

We continue to find the parking pass convenient for getting close to the beach with all of our gear. We also enjoy the ability to walk to the beach easily for an early morning stroll or late evening sunset walk. We'll be back next year!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your comments! We have consistently tried to improve the property every season, and this year it was the addition of the changing area for the outdoor shower. Besides this we redecorated the bedroom upstairs and redid the little apartment up there also. We tried to give the apartment the feel of separate kitchen, dining room and living room all in a coordinated decor. Thanks for your comments and thanks for staying with us. Hope you do return next year.

Great for families

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay with our toddler last fall. Easy walk to the beach with stroller and toys, and there was even a kid-sized wicker chair on the screened in porch which our daughter loved playing with. The porch also gave us the option of being ‘outside’ with a little one without the worry of constant supervision that comes with nearby water. Location on a cul-de-sac was also great for outdoor play without the worry of through traffic. Best-stocked kitchen I’ve ever seen in a vacation home – if you are planning on cooking or entertaining for a crowd, this house has everything you need!

Owner's Response: It is indeed a comfortable kitchen for a beach house! And we've found that with a second kitchen upstairs, including the second refrigerator, that guests can easily store food for the week, without having to shop more than once. We like to be in the kitchen ourselves, so having baking pans on hand and all the extras for cooking including a variety of cookbooks, makes us feel most at home.
