About Tyler

I purchased this home as a way to enjoy the beauty that is southeast Tennessee. I have always been an avid outdoors lover and this home provides the perfect mix of location, views, and serenity. I can't imagine not sharing it with others

Tyler purchased this house in 2015

Why Tyler chose Tennessee

The location of this property on the popular yet peaceful Hiwassee river. As well as it's location to the Appalachian Trail, big frog wilderness, the famous Ocoee River, and chilhowee recreation area are only a few of the reasons I chose this home.

What makes this house unique

The benefits of this home is within a short drive you can be downtown Chattanooga enjoying the city, rafting the Ocoee, grabbing lunch at the Whitewater Grill or simply relax on the deck overlooking the mountains and Hiwassee River.

Great for our family weekend

  • 4 of 5

There house was in a very nice neighborhood. The river and dock were great. A bit of a steep climb but good exercise. The house was functional and roomy. It is in need of a bit of updating and a lot of misc repair. We didn't find it extremely clean upon arrival so took that upon ourselves to have a clean kitchen. We also found the trash cans not empty which was a bit inconvenient. Overall we would choose to stay here again.

Beautiful View. Not so beautiful home

  • 2 of 5

Our group consisted of 3 adult couples. We stayed over the July 4th weekend. When booking on VRBO, I use the reviews to help me select the right property for my trips so with that in mind I try to provide balanced and relevant information for the next traveler.

PROS: The location is great! This home has a nice private feel even though it is in a community, yet it is just a short 15 minute drive to shopping and restaurants. The river is amazingly beautiful. The water is clean but beware it is super cold!! We brought our 6 person float and tied it to the boat dock and spent our days relaxing on the water. The boat dock is nice but it is a not an easy hike down and up. The slope is VERY STEEP causing the gravel to slide under your feet. This is NOT an easy walk at all. I point this out so you'll be prepared and not caught off guard. Once we got down there, it was fabulous (until it was time to trek back up...LOL) The beds were great!! The mattresses on all 3 beds slept well and were super comfortable. Kitchen is stocked with all the necessary items but could use an update on knives.

CONS: The home was not clean. There were toenail clippings on the floor of the 1/2 bath, we had to empty the dishwasher upon arrival, and the bath towels were still in the dryer. There were dirty hand prints on the back of the bathroom doors and we had to clean out previous food items from fridge before we could even load our groceries in.

We were told the day before our arrival that the upstairs tub was not accessible and it was implied this was a new development and could not be fixed before our arrival the next day. However, it appeared the damage was old and was most likely out of order well before our trip. The shower downstairs has multiple broken and loose tiles that will pinch your feet if you stand in the wrong spot. The pedestal sink in the 1/2 bath leaks around the base. The house does not seem to be maintained at all and looks more like a foreclosure property than a vacation rental. The porch was covered with cobwebs and the patio table of the boat dock was covered with approx. 3 inches of dirt. Looks like the river rose at some point or there was a mud slide and it was not cleared away.

Owner's Response: First of all we want to apologize that the house was not cleaned to your liking. Sometimes we have very short turn around times and depending on the conditions the previous renters leave the property, with only 3 hours sometimes to get this large of a house and property prepared I'm sure some areas have lacked from time to time but I assure you we do our best to make this house comfortable for all of our renters. From time to time we do leave some clean towels or linens in the dryer due to the short window of time we have to turn the house over for renters especially during the summer holiday weekends, but we always make sure the linen closets are stocked with plenty of clean folded towels for renters to use. We are currently interviewing cleaning services to aquire additional help to address these issues. In regards to the upstairs bathroom tub, it was certainly an issue that happened right before your stay. We have done what we could to remedy it for the time being until we have a break in renters to replace it completely. This is why we have notified the renters who are booked that we are issuing a refund for a portion of their stay. In regards to the steep hill we have discussed renting our UTV for future rental use to assist in the walk up and down. The only reason we have held back until now is the risk of liability because of the skill required to operate it safely up and down the trail. We appreciate your feedback, as we find ways to improve the River Retreat in the future.

Already Planning To Go Back

  • 5 of 5

Tyler was wonderful to work with. The house is beautiful, the view off the back porch looking down at the river and the mountains is breath taking. We are already planning our trip to go back. The house is in a great location, not too far away from town with stores and restaurants but far enough out to have an awesome view of the stars. The kitchen has everything you will need to cook with, the owners have gone over and above to make it a great stay. We loved the military decor!

Hiwassee River Retreat

  • 5 of 5

First I would like to thank Tyler for helping me out on such short notice. The home is beautiful and very comfortable. We travel to Tn every few months to visit my daughters and grand daughter. We usually stay at a different location but it was not available this time and with only one days notice Tyler accommodated us. And I must say the home is beautiful and very comfortable. The pictures do the home and the location no justice. If you are looking for a beautiful quite setting to relax and enjoy yourself this is the place.

Close to anything you could need. We will defiantly make future trips and plan a longer stay next time. I use VRBO to find accommodations 5 or 6 times a year and this place is a gem….if you plan a trip to the Chattanooga area you will not be disappointed one bit if you choose the River Retreat .

Banks of Hiwassee

  • 5 of 5

This is a newer home, and very comfortable. The well stocked kitchen was easy to cook in and clean up. There was a large deck off the living room facing the river, it was so peaceful sitting outside. We brought our kayaks and went on the river several times, rain held us up other times. It is a rugged trail down and up...but my son had no trouble throwing a kayak over his shoulder and carried it both up and down the hill with ease. Really hated to leave this beautiful home. Would recommend this home for family vacations. The home was clean, lawn freshly mowed.
