About Melissa Zodda

I am a landscape designer for the last 20 years from Buffalo, New York (originally from NJ). I decided to move to Gulfport after many years of visiting. I traded the snow for four seasons of sailing and sunshine. I currently enjoy sailing my 23' Compac sailboat, kayaking, fishing off the Skyway Pier and snorkeling off Fort DeSoto State Park coastline (among many, many other awesome places).

Melissa Zodda purchased this bungalow in 2015

Why Melissa Zodda chose St Petersburg Area

At first the location is what I loved about this property. Then it was the house's rich history that really sold me! While not having much architectural details left to preserve, I am able to at least continue its story for many years to come. In 1921, a hurricane had demolished the Gulfport Casino. From that lumber, my house was constructed and known as 'The White House'. There were very few houses at this time. The builder was the Mayor, Nathan McKinney, who built it as a wedding gift for his daughter and son-in-law, Ethel and Leander White. Leander's mother was the daughter of the very first settlers of Gulfport, the Barnett Family). With great appreciation for the volunteers at the Gulfport Historical Society (well worth a visit), I was able to find original photographs of the house which I have kept to its integrity as best I can.

What makes this bungalow unique

There's not a bad seat in the house! The views of tropical shrubs and palms, sweet smells of orange blossoms along with the sound of the many birds that enjoy the area (especially the parrots!) - entertain the senses. The bay breeze carries the smell of Stella's getting ready for the brunch crowd. In the morning, you can sit in the front shady garden at the bistro and enjoy your coffee and the friendly faces walking by. Then you can choose to sit in the large private backyard later in the day and enjoy the winding paths of mature tropicals, cactus, birds and plentiful fruit trees. The early part of the year is best for pink grapefruit picking along with the two kinds of oranges. The location couldn't be better! All the exciting life of Gulfport, but also the peaceful setting. Its the kind of place that you just don't feel like getting in the car - its a real vacation.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"She's constantly available and yet we didn't meet her because she respects her guests' space and we didn't need anything. Her bungalow is so welcoming that one of my children woke up this morning crying because he wished he was sill there. The bungalow is peaceful. Its as if it was started with an empty, clean, and warmly painted place and each item was carefully added as it was seen as useful. Each useful item was carefully chosen to be peaceful. Also, there were hooks to hang stuff everywhere! As we were traveling with four small children (spending each day at the beach), this was extremely helpful. Also helpful was the picnic table on the back deck. Our children did not eat one meal indoors during our entire visit and they were thrilled. The neighborhood is exactly as described and the beach is a block away. The arts district is adorable and I will miss the restaurants until we visit again. If we do et to visit again, I do hope we get to stay here."

Peaceful and Cute!

  • 5 of 5

We loved the Bungalow! It was in the perfect location, close to Fort De Soto, St Pete's Beach, St. Petersburg and Clearwater yet was in a very quiet location. The house itself has everything you need from beach gear, anything you could need for a kitchen and even the ability to use your Netflix account in the living room. Only a few blocks from the Gulfport pier, it's fun to walk around the small downtown area. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a very comfortable place to stay, away from any touristy areas yet close to everything.

This bungalow and Gulfport are both wonderful escapes from the fast paced crazy world we live in! Melissa's place was perfect. She has thought of everything to make you feel at home. And is quick to respond to any questions you have. Definitely already thinking of when I can make another escape!

A week in beautiful, funky Gulfport!

  • 5 of 5

I completely loved my week long experience in Gulfport, a City within a City (Saint Petersburg) that first captivated me with its charms last year. Gulfport is artsy and full of character, some of it slightly oddball (my favourite part). Its specialness cannot be over stressed. I had meals in several of the restaurants there ... all good! The shops along the main street are each unique and fun to browse around in. (I did quite a lot of very satisfying shopping there) My stay at Gypsy Landing was equally satisfying. This bungalow is stylish and clean, with all the traditional character intact, and the "new" where you want it to be. Everything that's needed is there, from beach stuff, to better than average towels, to a full canister of coffee, to comfortable beds/furnishings and a lovely back deck. I felt totally at home! (it was so hard to leave) Gulfport is also an easy drive to many other attractions in the area, regardless of what floats your boat. All in all, I would call Gulfport one of Florida's best kept secrets. Although now I suppose the word is out :) Enjoy!!

Loved this clean and comfortable cottage.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this historic bungalow for the month of January 2016 and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Every effort has been made to make renters feel at home. The kitchen is well stocked. I love to cook so only had to add my own sharp knife and a wooden cutting board (there is a plastic one). All appliances are brand new as is the furniture. Freshly and tastefully painted and decorated throughout.

The only drawback is the cold. There are space heaters. New and efficient ones but it was drafty and a little cool when the temperature dips into the 40's at night. I know the owner is planning on replacing the windows soon and this will complete what is already a lovely renovation.

The location is perfect-a block off the main street of Gulfport but far enough away from bars, etc to not be bothered by late night noise. Great spot to walk or bike to everything. Several good restaurants within a few blocks. Also art shows, farmer's markets, etc.

I would highly recommend this rental. I should add that we had a couple of minor problems that were addressed almost immediately by the owner who lives in Gulfport and is very attentive.

delightful beach house, clean, bright and charming

We had a lovely stay in this clean and bright Gulfport home, grandma, grandpa, daughters and grandchild, as well as our puppy! Gulfport is a fine destination for families, all is in walking distance with delicious food and a relaxed ambiance. We enjoyed the weekly food and art markets as well. The home was just as promised.
