About Melissa Zodda

I am a landscape designer for the last 20 years from Buffalo, New York (originally from NJ). I decided to move to Gulfport after many years of visiting. I traded the snow for four seasons of sailing and sunshine. I currently enjoy sailing my 23' Compac sailboat, kayaking, fishing off the Skyway Pier and snorkeling off Fort DeSoto State Park coastline (among many, many other awesome places).

Melissa Zodda purchased this bungalow in 2015

Why Melissa Zodda chose St Petersburg Area

At first the location is what I loved about this property. Then it was the house's rich history that really sold me! While not having much architectural details left to preserve, I am able to at least continue its story for many years to come. In 1921, a hurricane had demolished the Gulfport Casino. From that lumber, my house was constructed and known as 'The White House'. There were very few houses at this time. The builder was the Mayor, Nathan McKinney, who built it as a wedding gift for his daughter and son-in-law, Ethel and Leander White. Leander's mother was the daughter of the very first settlers of Gulfport, the Barnett Family). With great appreciation for the volunteers at the Gulfport Historical Society (well worth a visit), I was able to find original photographs of the house which I have kept to its integrity as best I can.

What makes this bungalow unique

There's not a bad seat in the house! The views of tropical shrubs and palms, sweet smells of orange blossoms along with the sound of the many birds that enjoy the area (especially the parrots!) - entertain the senses. The bay breeze carries the smell of Stella's getting ready for the brunch crowd. In the morning, you can sit in the front shady garden at the bistro and enjoy your coffee and the friendly faces walking by. Then you can choose to sit in the large private backyard later in the day and enjoy the winding paths of mature tropicals, cactus, birds and plentiful fruit trees. The early part of the year is best for pink grapefruit picking along with the two kinds of oranges. The location couldn't be better! All the exciting life of Gulfport, but also the peaceful setting. Its the kind of place that you just don't feel like getting in the car - its a real vacation.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"She's constantly available and yet we didn't meet her because she respects her guests' space and we didn't need anything. Her bungalow is so welcoming that one of my children woke up this morning crying because he wished he was sill there. The bungalow is peaceful. Its as if it was started with an empty, clean, and warmly painted place and each item was carefully added as it was seen as useful. Each useful item was carefully chosen to be peaceful. Also, there were hooks to hang stuff everywhere! As we were traveling with four small children (spending each day at the beach), this was extremely helpful. Also helpful was the picnic table on the back deck. Our children did not eat one meal indoors during our entire visit and they were thrilled. The neighborhood is exactly as described and the beach is a block away. The arts district is adorable and I will miss the restaurants until we visit again. If we do et to visit again, I do hope we get to stay here."

Stay in area to explore Tampa/St Pete

  • 5 of 5

The house is very clean and just a short walk to the Gulfport beachfront area with many restaurants to choose from. Melissa was extremely helpful and prompt when contacted. We needed an extra bike for our teenagers and she was quick to deliver it while we were out at the store. It also is a short drive (20 minutes) to other beach areas such as St Pete beach, Treasure Island, Ft De Soto National Park and Madeira Beach. Gulfport is a unique town that many may miss when visiting in the Tampa/St Pete area. Whenever we spoke with locals they always said great things and had a recommendation for their favorite restaurant. We would definitely stay here again when in this area.

Adored This Place!!!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely LOVED this adorable bungalow. It was updated and very clean. It came fully stocked with everything a family needs and then some! The neighborhood was very artsy and fun! The cottage was walking distance to all the shops, restaurants and bars plus parks, pier and the waterfront! We were thrilled that this cottage was pet friendly and Duke loved it! Melissa was beyond accommodating! We will definitely book here again!!!!!

Charming time in Gulfport bungalow

  • 5 of 5

I can't say enough about this beautifully renovated beach bungalow, Gulfport and of course the owner Melissa. Gulfport is a charming & quirky township in St. Pete's. It is artistic and funky and even though it is small, it has everything you need in WALKING distance.

The restaurants and shops are one block away, and there is a great restaurant that even caters to gluten allergies & vegans!

I felt right at home in the bungalow, it has everything you need, including a binder with things to do and the basics of food and shopping. As a designer myself, I really appreciated to love and attention to detail Melissa gave in renovating this adorable beach bungalow.

Melissa strikes a perfect balance of being available for questions and anything that arrises, but being hands-off so you can enjoy your privacy (the main reason I always choose a rental over a B&B!)

I opted to use the local grocery store (Publix) grocery delivery service and within 2 hours I had a fridge full of healthy food.

Gulfport itself is really cute. Its like a little piece of Key West was transplanted. There are lots of artists and boutiques. It is a lovely spot. I was in town for a conference in down town st Pete's (20min drive from Gulfport) and my only regret was that I was too busy to spend more time in Gulfport!

You can't go wrong by staying here.

We loved our stay in this beautifully decorated, quirky cottage. It has lots of charm, a great location, good beds and a lovely secluded back yard. Our hosts were quick to respond when we had any questions and we would happily stay here again.
