starWe have just enjoyed a wonderful stay at Compass Cottage, 5 mins from dunes and gorgeous Winterton beach and 30 seconds from the fabulous pub! The cottage has everything you could hope for and more with a lovely complimentary goodie bags and fluffy dressing gowns to wear for the stay, and every other thing to make it an amazing home from home. Great location too, we enjoyed crabbing at Walberswick and lovely days at Southwold, Thetford Forest and Dinosaur Adventure! Great fish and chip shop in the village too we will be back!
Deceptively spacious very well equipped cosy cottage in beautiful unspoilt village.
Secure garden for the dogs.
Everything we needed was provided and in an enviable position close to amazing beach. We
will return .
We have always enjoyed our stay at Compass Cottage and have never found it lacking in anything. It is always clean and fresh smelling, comfortable seating with plenty of towels and the comfortable beds all made up ready for the weary traveller to snuggle into.
The welcome pack is always much appreciated, especially with the tea, coffee and fresh milk waiting for us to put the kettle on when we arrive.
The garden is fully enclosed and with our two dogs being Jack Russell's they usually stay dry even if it is raining, always a bonus!
The cottage makes a great base if you are wanting to be out exploring every day, but is well equipped and comfortable enough to stay in all day if that is your choice. Wifi, television and a selection of videos, as well as books to read and many different board games to play, even the odd jigsaw puzzle are all provided.
It is set back from the road, so not much traffic noise, in a quiet and very pretty village. We were actually told by a lady with a camera who saw us leaving the cottage how lucky we were to live there!
A short walk takes you to the road to to the dunes and the beach, with a good little cafe there, which understandably only opens at weekends out of season. There is also a post office and a "corner shop" in the centre of the village. The fish and chip shop again opens seasonally and so their very tasty food is only on offer a few days during our stay, but the local pub, The Fishermans Return also cooks food and welcomes dogs.
There is also an excellent pub in Bacton, called The Poachers Pocket, extremely friendly and helpful staff, serves delicious salmon amongst a whole variety of food and also welcomes dogs. It has views overlooking the sea and you can walk through the car park and straight along the beach, if you have eaten too much or the dogs need an extra walk!!
I cannot recommend this cottage enough, it is our "home from home" for the week and we look forward to our "recharging" break there every year.
We loved our week in Winterton - pretty cottage with all the mod cons and a caring owner. Super location for our dog too - small enclosed rear garden, great beach down the road and so many dog friendly pubs and cafes in the area. You can walk for miles along the sandy beach or dune trails, plus long distance footpaths. Lots of places to explore in the area and if you've kids, some good family attractions. We hired a day boat (dogs welcome) on the Broads from Potter Heigham and loved it - would recommend one of the electric boats, rather than noise and vibration of diesel ones. The Fishermans Return pub near the cottage is perfect for meals and dogs welcome in and out. Ditto the Nelsons Head at Horsey 4 miles away - great food and beer garden 'field'. The Dunes beach cafe in Winterton is a delight (great menu and wonderful cakes) and popular, so pot luck on getting a table on sunny days. Seating indoors and lots more outside, some under a canopy. Dogs well catered for with a supply of bowls and bottles of water to serve yourself. The village has a post office/shop, grocery/newsagent and fish and chip shop. We'd come back in a heartbeat to this lovely location!
As soon as we arrived our children (aged 9 and 5) were bursting to explore the cottage and to see their room. None of us were disappointed - from the welcome pack to the size and cleanliness of the property. Although we came prepared the outside store (I couldn't resist a peek) contained a treasure-trove of items you might require.
We find on reviews that people say many things and make out that properties are either super fantastic or pick at silly little things and I don't believe in doing either. The simple fact is that if we were to return to Winterton-on-Sea then this is the first property I would look at to see if it were free for our stay. This says it all - we took weeks looking at different properties until my wife stumbled across this one which ticked all of our boxes.
As an aside the local beach is so close, although we prefer to drive as it is easier to "hose down" the kids with water afterwards, the post office and chip shop you pass on the way as well as the other shop - all handy when returning from the beach, needing a paper and some extra items to make sandwiches.
Handy hint for Winterton beach : Don't follow everyone else who go down the slope by the side of the café - instead drive further (just say you want to do this when paying for parking) inside the car park over towards the black huts - there is an additional path there that takes you away from everyone else.
Hemsby (for the "slot machines") is a five minute (if that) drive away with a huge choice of arcades - "Mrs B's" suited us for all round family safety - go right in and use the beach car park followed by a round of crazy golf.
I had a fantastic holiday close to the beach. It was exactly what I wanted. A spacious property in pretty surroundings. We will definitely be returning.
the person who owns this property must be so very caring from the minute we walked in the front door we were home cant explain we settled got there late at night after a long drive and just got in the lovely comfortable clean beds even the dog settled i would love to see the owner and hug her . compass cottage is fully booked for now, but will keep looking and go again sap. thank you
The area around Winterton provides a great variety of different activities to suit different tastes. From coarse fishing, sailing, golf, birdwatching, horseriding and walking for those seeking outdoor pursuits, to National Trust properties and historic Norwich or family entertainment, theatres, horse racing, grayhound race track, fun fairs and amusements in Great Yarmouth (ten miles south).
