I have been skiing at White Pass since I could walk. Rudy and I love the area because there is so much to do in all seasons. The scenery is beautiful and the town is very relaxed.
Kate and Rudy purchased this cabin in 2009
Overall we had a really positive relaxing experience. The only comment I'd have is that there was a dirty pot in the sink when we got there and trash in the bathroom, but we were able to stay warm while it was very cold outside. Thank you for sharing your wonderful home!
The chalet is on beautiful woodsy grounds. It's cozy, well maintained, and has great personal touches. The bed in the loft is very comfortable. There are neighbors close by but it's still quiet and private. Hosts were great communicating with prior to our arrival and we had everything we needed during the stay.
The cabin is deceptively spacious - the living area and kitchen are a good size - and has pretty much everything you could need, even down to a hot tub on the deck out back. It backs onto woods and is very quiet, and very well placed for Mount Rainier National Park, while the little town of Packwood is about three miles away and has a decent general store. Kate's directions/instructions made everything very straightforward in terms of finding and accessing the property. The scenery is truly spectacular and I had a great nine days hiking and trail-running.
Our family of four - two adults, kids 10 and 16 - enjoyed the 3 nights we spent midweek in Packwood.
The space: Lovely, well kept A frame house with a small shed for sleeping out back. Its not incredibly fancy, but its very clean and comfortable, and has everything you'd need to relax for a few days. All cooking utensils, bedding, towels, some left over food in the fridge, board games, CDs. You can tell the owning family enjoys and cares about the space, there are homey trinkets decorating everything, it adds some charm. Also, they sent easy instructions and were not intrusive - we really appreciated that. We had no issues so didn't need to communicate with the owners directly at all.
The bedroom is lofted above the kitchen, there is a double and a small bed there, and a cot you could take downstairs. Also a fold out futon downstairs. The space is not huge, but very comfortable for a family or close friends.
The yard amenities are great too - a hot tub, a hammock, and a fire pit (we didn't use but would have if not for burn ban). Nice chairs for lounging out back and front, and even some old swings near the road. You can also use the pool which is down the road a bit, or golf too. They have a TV / DVD player (2 actually) no internet.
The area: Packwood is a small town South/southest of Mt. Rainier, and its about a 7 min drive from the property to the "main drag". Its not much of a town, not like a charming strolling antiques little town - more like a couple diners and a gas station, and a functional market w/ produce. With bad traffic it took us more than 3 hours to get there from Seattle, but on the drive back, no traffic took less than 2.5.
For hikers: If you are here exclusively for Mt. Rainier trips, its a good drive to and from. To Paradise, plan for 1.5 hours to trailheads. For Sunrise, about the same, maybe a bit less. Closer hikes are abundant, we did the Naches Loop hike which is lovely (but easy) and about 45 mins, and you can also drive minutes - like 5 - in to Gifford Pinchot National Forest and play around in creeks, etc. I'm sure lots of other nice trips in the national forests right there to get to easily.
I'd recommend this to families or couples, small groups of friends that are looking for a very laid back, restful sort of weekend trip.
This super cute quaint cabin far exceeded our expectations! The VRBO pictures do not do it justice! As the listing says this is not Hollywood, it's Packwood so don't expect sparking granite counter tops, top of the line appliances, and luxury (although the lighted shower head was pretty modern!!) What you can expect is charm, charm, and more charm and everything you need for an awesome weekend in the mountains. The hot tub was a big hit as was access to the Country Club pool for a $5/person fee which was well worth it!! We found the cabin clean and well cared for and in a super cute community we never even knew existed. Even though there were neighbors, you felt like you were in the middle of nowhere. We can't wait to return!!!
We really enjoyed staying at this little A-frame in the woods. It is close to the White River, convenient to Mt. Rainer, and less crowded and commercialized than the west side entrance towns. The owners responded to our calls right away and were extremely patient with me.
Packwood is a small town 3 miles away. Home of the large 2 mile long Memorial and Labor Day Weekend Flea Markets.
