Rundown cottage on Lake

  • 1 of 5

I always thought that if we rented a property through VRBO that it would need to meet some sort of quality standard. Apparently this is not the case. This cottage was rundown and un kept at best. The owner has junk stored in the upstairs and in closets and has huge quantities of Moth Balls thrown in there to keep the pests out. As a result the place smells of Moth Balls. The first night we tried to sleep with the windows closed (to keep warm) and I woke in the night with a sore throat from the smell. We needed to have the windows open and fans running constantly in order to be in the room.

The floors are unlevel and the wooden boards have cracks and rotten spots that someone could fall through. On the front porch the floor boards are so loose and rotted in several places that they are a safety hazard because you could fall through the floor and onto the junk stored below.

When we rented the property the listing said that sheets and towels were provided. We did manage to find enough sheets to cover the beds but one of them was torn and I'm not sure they had been laundered. We had brought beach towels so we were able to dry ourselves after showers but we had to go to town to buy dish towels and dish rags to wash dishes and keep the kitchen clean so that we could stay ahead of the ants.

When we arrived there were three large garbage totes outside the back door but they were completely full of garbage. No one ever came to take away the garbage so we were forced to pile our garbage sacks around the cans.

The boat docks were so shaky that they were difficult to walk on and not sturdy enough to tie a pontoon boat to. We had to hold our grandchildren's hand just to get them on a boat.

I could go on but will stop with this for now. I have to say that the condition of the property and the amount that they charged was terrible. It definitely put a damper on our vacation and caused quite a bit of stress early on but as the week went by we learned to just laugh at the stupid situation and make the best of a bad situation (we did leave a day early to get away from it).

I do think the property owner should be embarrassed and ashamed to rent this for as much as he does to people who can not see the property until they are stuck there. Also VRBO should take some of the blame because renters assume that the propertys that VRBO rent have been inspected and meet some sort of quality standard. Shame on all of you for taking advantage of unsuspecting vacationers.

Owner's Response: I am sorry my tenants were not happy. The cottage has been used by quite a few people with no problems. The junk stored in the 2 locked closets are tools and boating gear. The upstairs loft has no access except a ladder and not available to tenants. It is used to store excess furniture sails etc not Moth Balls. The floors are not perfectly level but not rotten. It is an older cottage.Have never had complaints about docks 1 18'. 0ther 12'. We have never provided sheets towels or air.It somehow got changed am changing back.We keep some sheets for emergency. The house is cleaned by a cleaning service before each new tenant. Garbage was a problem. Our local carting co sold out to a co from N.Y.After many calls they got it right.tenants said rent charged terrible.A weeks rent is $1300 - 7 days-7 people--$26.53 per person per day?
