We built our island home in 2005. It has been a pleasure to share it with guests over the years. We love North Captiva, and it is great to have others come out and enjoy the island also. We live in Springfield; and one day, when we retire we hope to be able to spend more time on Island. 'Till then, it is our pleasure to share the experience of North Captiva with all our guests. So, come and enjoy our island. Always a pleasure to host your stay!
Mark Ladner purchased this house in 2012
North Captiva is a tropical barrier island located just off the coast of Southwest Florida. I have been coming down to this area all my adult life and when we discovered North Captiva Island we fell in love. We purchased a lot and built the Coral Reef in 2005. Since then we have hosted family groups and friends....
The Coral Reef, professionally decorated and fully furnished, is a one-of-a-kind home designed for island living and ready to be your home away from home. North Captiva is a unique respite in this world of hustle - no cars, no street lights, 3.5 miles of natural beach all on a little tropical island, North Captiva! We fell in love with it, and we know you will too!
The most unique benefit of staying at the Coral Reef is "Island Time" . A mixture of rest and relaxation, with just the right amount of discovery and socializing - away from it all, but still able to enjoy several unique quality restaurants and more sea shells and sand dollars than you will ever be able to bring home. With no street lights you can enjoy watching the stars and moon travel across the darkened sky. Staying on North Captiva is just an amazing experience we call it 'Island Time.'
For us (two families from Sweden with 4 adults and 5 children between 6 months and 13 years old, this was a perfect island to relax and enjoy life together. The house was big enough for all of us and we can recommend to stay there. As the host Sherman said, you only need to remember to bring two things: bathing clothes and plenty of food. If you are looking for a busy and crowded place with a lot of restaurants and cafés this is not your island. If you are looking for empty beaches, ospreys, white-headed eagle, shelling, manatees, sun-sets, stargazing and relaxed people this is the place for you!
After spending Thanksgiving at Captiva for 25 years and wondering "what's over there?" we decided to try NC. The island did not disappoint. The home needs some TLC. The kitchen sink fell into the cabinet...Had to be propped up with a 2x4. Nothing like a little construction on the deck while you are sitting out there. The previous water damage on the ceiling/window was not completely repaired. The light in the shower in the Master bathroom is hanging from the ceiling. The water in the toilet in the same bathroom runs after flushing, you have to shake the handle to stop the running water. the "rain"shower, is more like a drizzle as it is mostly clogged. The refrigerator on the patio does not work. Many nails left laying on the sun deck. The golf cart has a broken headlight, which is dangerous at night. This is the first VRBO rental that we were disappointed in, as the site shows outdated pictures. There were positives...The house was clean and the kitchen was stocked with everything we needed. There were plenty of beach towels and bedding. the location was ideal for heading to the beach and the club membership a nice amenity. The island did not disappoint.
We went To Coral Reef to celebrate my 50th birthday on Nov 14th and had one of the best experiences at Florida Beaches with my family all coming from California, Florida and Caracas and a couple of friends coming from Orlando ... The house is very well equipped, the owner is very responsive, friendly, flexible and open. The manager is very responsive as well. It was our first time ever in North Captiva, the place is very relaxing, the house amenities made us feel at home, we cooked a lot while there, used the two golf carts every day, the pool, the grill to grill and to make some seafood rice (Paella), the table tennis, we even brought our Yorkie and he was in paradise... free and moving upstairs and downstairs, inside and outside the house... The time of the year (Early November) ... perfect to be there... not hot not cold.
Will rent and stay again: YES
Will recommend to others: YES
My family vacationed at Coral Reef on North Captiva Island and could not have asked for a better setting. Sherman the house manager greeted us at the dock when we first arrived and helped us transport all our stuff to the house. We could not have done it without him! He was a great help and very informative about the island. We had 11 family members and sleep accommodations were excellent. The house was beautiful and the Island even more. We took advantage of the kayaking and had a wonderful time on the beach each and every day. We hiked in the Nature Preserve and saw turtles, eagles and osprey.
Dinner at Barnacle Phil's was a fun time, we took of advantage the outside games and picnic tables. The services was great and the waiters were so friendly, at week's end you felt you were leaving friends behind. We used Island Girl taxi service to cross over to the island and used it to go back and forth for a couple of games of golf at the Alden Pines Country Club near Pineland Marina. You could not ask for more friendly and helpful people. Overall it was a wonderful vacation with my family and I thank you Mike very much for providing such a great place!
The Coral Reef house has all you need for a vacation! You bring the bags and sunscreen and have the grocery store pack your food. The home has great outdoor space for reading, lounging and grilling. The location is ideal and makes walking to the beach easy when your older kids have the golf cart. The kitchen and baths are well equipped and ready for you. We also liked the set up of laundry closet right at your door for swim wear and towels after we shook them out. We would rent again! Thanks to the Ladners for a great set up.
The house is in a great area of the island with nice views, close to the beach and well maintained. I understand why there is not picture of a pool on the site. It is a dipping pool not big at all. If you are looking for a pool to play a game with your children this would not be it. However I would not pass up on the house because of it. Eating on the porch off the kitchen is great suggestion would be to screen it in. The bugs were on the hunt this year.
The golf carts need some serious updating, the first one we had was very slow and the back seat was falling off. The second one the headlight did not work.
We enjoyed our week, love the island and would rent again but we would make sure we inquired about the carts working better or newer ones next time.
3.5 miles of beach and access to the back bay by kayak which affords great wildlife viewing and fishing, just relaxing, and living life by 'island time.'
Take a ferry services for a sunset cruse or island hopping to check out the neighborhood.
New game room with darts, a shuffle board table, 'corn hole' (the bean bag toss game) and more.
