Wonderful place to stay

  • 5 of 5

The house and location fit my needs perfectly and the owner (Beth) is extremely helpful and nice. I would stay again and would recommend this to my friends.

The house is clean, comfortable, and roomy with nice natural daytime lighting (not dark and dingy like some places). It has everything you need so it feels like home and saves you running out to get something all the time. There is ample parking and is the easiest place ever to park a boat since it’s a corner lot you can drive thru so no need to back in. The neighborhood is quiet and about as nice as you find in the Key Largo for a reasonable price since houses are spaced out a bit (many places in Keys are jammed in in tight with neighbors close by but this one has more room).

For me, the location was perfect since there is a community park on Largo Sound with a boat ramp which we used almost every day. Its great if you have a boat or kayak (which you can rent at Florida Bay Outfitters like we did and they deliver to the house). Largo Sound is great for kayaking…better than the bay really since its less choppy and you can paddle out the protected channels to Garden Cove or Pennekamp. Plus, you can easily paddle over to Pennekamp State Park and save on the entrance fee. The community park is great for boating but otherwise the scenery is limited since much of the view is blocked by a mangrove point. We just boated or kayaked out 100’ many evenings to watch the sunset from the water.

We had our own bikes since the Keys are great for biking. The house comes with bikes if need be but they are not ideal for serious long distance bikers (like we are). Key largo has nice bike paths on both sides of the road but the middle Keys are way more scenic so I suggest biking there if possible.

If you like to snorkel, bike, kayak, boat, watch sunsets over the water, visit the Everglades, and/or tour the keys then this house and Key Largo are for you. Its not for those wanting to sit around the beach or pool. Beware Keys traffic can be slow so allow extra time to visit Bahai Honda State Park and Key West which are must see spots. Also go to Everglades Natl park which is close to Key Largo, especially on windy days when the Keys snorkeling and water sports are not the best.

Warm and Sunny . . . Key Largo

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful home to spend a month in! This home is in a quiet neighborhood of Key Largo, it is tastefully decorated, very comfortable, and everything was in good working order. John Pennekamp State Park with its snorkeling, beaches, kayaking and glass boat tour is within easy walking distance and grocery stores were nearby. It was a good location for driving to the Everglades and Redland area (don't miss the milkshakes at Robert Is Here)and also for further exploration of the Keys. Highlights of our trip: absolutely perfect weather, kayaking at Robbie's (seeing a manatee and feeding the tarpon), kayaking at Curry Hammock, the Turtle Hospital, huge crabs while wading at Long Key, the Key Deer and No Name Pub,and much more.

Conversations with the owners were very pleasant and helpful. We would love to return.

Fun on the Keys

  • 5 of 5

Just got back to the UK yesterday and saw this. We had a great time - went to Pennenkamp park, down to Key West, and definitely agree that Hobos is a good place for food. Our only problem was that our rental car wasn't big enough to fit the bikes in! We've stayed in a lot rental properties over the years and it really makes a difference when the owners have thought of everything, like Beth and Ray did. Makes it feel like home. You wouldn't believe the number of times we end up buying things like boxes of Finish because someone didn't make simple stuff available like dishwasher tablets/foil/Ziploc bags/salt/olive oil/insert your own essential here. Always difficult when you don't know what's there and aren't coming in your own transport from your own place and can't pack stuff just in case.

We are a long way from Key Largo here, but I would certainly recommend your place if I was asked.

Other Activities:

Top Thing to do in City:

* Snorkeling.

* Fishing.

* Diving.

* Shopping.

* Dining.

Top Thing to do in Budget:

* John Pennekamp State Park, MM 102 - Eco Tours.

* Bird Rehab Center, MM 93.6 - See Local Birds up close.

* Old 7 Mile Bridge to Pigeon Key, MM 49 - Walk or Bike Ride.

* Big Pine Key - See Key Deer & eat Pizza @ The No Name Pub, MM 33..

Top Thing to do in Family:

* Robbie's Marina, MM 77 - Feed the Tarpon & Go Kayaking.

* Everglades National Park, Homestead - See Natural FL Wildlife.

* Dive Museum, MM 83 - History of Diving.

* The Turtle Hospital, MM 49 - call for Tour Times.

* Theater of the Sea, MM 84.5 - Swim with Dolphins & Marine Park.

The house is conveniently next to world famous John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. The park has two beaches and a replica of a shipwreck in the water that is great for snorkeling or diving. You can take a glass-bottom boat ride over the reefs, take a tour snorkeling via motorboat or a sailing catamaran, as well as rent a canoe or see-through raft. Expolore on your own or join a fun group. The park has two great nature trails for hiking, a lookout point, and some of the subtropical fish can even be seen from shore. There is a nice visitor center with lookout points, trails, and a saltwater aquarium. Charter boat fishing, and diving are all nearby.

Also close to Dolphin Encounter, Theater of the Sea, Bird Sanctuary, movie theater, designer shops, restaurants, and market.

There is a wonderful Key Largo Community Park 3 miles south, where there are 3 pools, water park, lighted tennis courts, fitness track, bicycle and rollerblade course, and various classes offered such as water aerobics, yoga, etc.

Key Largo Hammocks State Botanical site, with its unusual plants and wildlife, is one of the best places on the island for a sheltered bike ride. Birdwatchers won't be disappointed. There is 6 miles of bike path along overseas highway. The island's beauty has attracted a large number of artists whose work is displayed at local galleries. Other shops, bars, and restaurants are as varied as they are plentiful.

Known as the "DIVE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD," getting into or under the water is what makes a trip to Key Largo worthwhile. You can go after the big ones with a Key Largo charter boat captain, or fish with a backcountry guide in the waters of Florida Bay or the Everglades.

With only a few exceptions, everything in the Keys tends to be casual, in dress, service and food. The tropical paradise of Key Largo is only 56 miles south of Miami International Airport, but feels a world away.
