Home is also within walking distance to Jeanna's (groceries and sandwiches), Fausto's (small supermarket w/beer and wine), and Walgreens.
We stayed a week the end of June at mermaids dream and none of us wanted to leave. Truman's Annex is a fantastic location. It's close to everything, yet very quiet and peaceful, except for the odd rooster who wants to make his presence known.
The house is well-equipped. It has everything that you would need and then some. We did a lot of cooking, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well equipped the kitchen was.
The owners, Tom and Patti, are very easy to work with, and very helpful.
This was our first trip to Key West, but it won't be our last and we hope to keep coming back to mermaids dream.
Mermaids Dream was the perfect Home away from Home! Patti and Tom have made the accommodations perfect from the comfy bedding to the abundant towels, and the upgraded furnishings throughout the condo, we really did not want to leave! Super clean, fully stocked kitchen with all the pots and pans you need. Hit the Publix either in Marathon or Key West and you are good to go. Falston's (small but full grocery) or the Half Shell Fish Market are within Walking Distance, if you still need other grocery's or fish for the gas grill!
The welcome letter had great suggestions for sightseeing, and the BEST gem, is the Fort Zach Beach behind Truman Annex! Nearly private and the most beautiful Caribbean like waters... it is within walking distance, but if you have 4 people, just take your car and cooler, it is cheaper! Sunsets are not as crowded as Mallory Sq, and you get a diff perspective. BTW.. We left 4 rafts in the closet upstairs for others to float on in the ocean, as it was MAGNIFICENT!
We also went to Lazy Dog Kayaking (located right before you get to Key West)- That was Amazing and fun for an afternoon! They also have paddle boards, so you can take either thru the mangroves and learn about the sea life in the area.
For Tourist info and hot spots: The Conch Train is a must for great Island info, early in the stay, then you can decide where you want to go. Some of our favorite locales... Charlie Mac has amazing Fried Pickles, next to Green Parrot and darned good BBQ, as well. Smokin' Tuna on Charles & Duval is a great restaurant/bar tucked away with live music, fab food and great drinks. We also loved Irish Kelvins for fun live music and a dance floor; Lazy Gecko for Boston Sports Fans (or sports fans in general).. or Jack Flats for a fabulous Sports Bar which has huge Flat Screen TV's.
We will totally come back to Key West, and when we do, we will hope that Mermaids Dream will be available. The ease of reservation, the service provided, the way the property was maintained and kept cleaned, the fact that Truman Annex is a gated community and all the amenities included... these are all details that ensure a return trip from me and my group of friends.
My crew and I stayed here for 9 days during a regatta. The owner was very responsive and was able to accommodate our schedule that was not the standard Saturday to Saturday rental. This was very important because moving around during our stay was not an option. The location is perfect! Located right in the heart of Truman Annex, you are only a few minutes away from almost everything by foot or you can use one of the provided bikes to quickly reach further destinations. The house was clean and well equipped. Thanks for the wine. We hope to stay here again next year. Cheers!
Nancy and Bill spent another great winter vacation at Mermaid's Dream in Key West. This is the sixth year we have been here. Each year when we return to our favorite place in Key West we marvel at all the changes that Patti and Tom have made. The televisions are the latest models, the kitchen is fully equipped, the home is tastefully and comfortably furnished and linens are spotless. An added attraction due to tree trimming is the sunny front porch. The back patio is also delightful and we enjoy eating meals and spending a lot of time there.
Location is a hugh plus for Mermaid's Dream. It is in a very quiet part of the Truman Annex but also is within walking distance of everything - grocery store, wonderful restaurants, movies theaters, churches, art galleries, restaurants, bars, waterfront entertainment, boat trips and much more. The community swimming pool is heated and the lovely beach at Fort Zachary Taylor can be easily reach by car, bicycle or walking.
The owners of Mermaid's Dream have made their home a special place for those who come here. We are looking forward to returning for our next vacatino in 2014.
Thanks Patty and Tom.
we holidayed for four weeks at Mermaid with our adult daughters staying with us for 10 days. after the flight from london, uk it was wonderful to drop the cases and be able to immediately relax in comfortable surroundings. the townhouse was well furnished with ample supplies of linen etc. location of property was perfect for beach, sundowner celebrations, communal pool, mallory area etc: short walk to the harbour which is full of local characters and interest and constantly changing. property was clean and adequately maintained. decor in keeping with holiday location.
could do with upgrading of bedroom tvs. stairs are steep but adequately manageable with handrails: consistent with this type of townhouse property. parking very close but in truth the car was only used occasionally due to the central location.
try the local theatre if there is a production-comfortable and good standard. similarly the local cinema just of Duval-family run and friendly. restaurants many and varied: surprising number of better than average establishments. daughters experienced the dolphin research centre which was excellent-recommend the use of a wet suit [we hired for the day at the kw harbour].
owner was easy and reliable to deal with, in our case entirely by email. no surprises due to accuracy of information initially supplied. we tried to rent the property again in February 2010 but dates available not convenient. have rented another within truman annex.
We had a great time staying at Mermaid's Dream for Christmas, 2009. It was exactly as listed, clean, beautifully decorated and spacious, a great patio and the perfect location, plus we had the use of the pool and a reserved parking spot close to the townhouse. It is perfect for being close to Duval and all the action without having all the noise and people. We walked just about everywhere. The owner was very easy to work with and gave us some great recommendations on places to go, restaurants and bars.
Two things to note: the stairs in the townhouses in this area do not have hand rails on both sides of the stairs and the stairs are a little narrow, so the upstairs might not be OK for older people or people with disabilities. The other thing is, be sure to get directions from the owner about where the townhouse is located; it does not face the street and we had quite a time finding it and the parking spot.
There is a full bath upstairs and one downstairs, and both bedrooms are upstairs, with a hide-a-bed sofa downstairs. It was perfect for us, two 60-something adults and a 20-something adult who could be downstairs watching TV when we were upstairs asleep. The description did not mention the dishwasher and the washer-dryer in the townhouse which we also appreciated, along with a nice TV and DVD player. The kitchen was fully equiped, including a coffee pot, which as a first time renter, I was not expecting.
There are a lot of other cities still to see for us, but if we ever go back to Key West, I would want to stay here again.
