About Eileen or Fred

Our family has been vacationing in Horseshoe Beach since the early 70's when our Dad discovered Horseshoe with his fishing buddies, accidentally stumbling upon this gem of a fishing spot when looking for a place to refuel their boat . The original red cabin in this location was destroyed in the '92 "Storm of the Century." It was another 10 years before Papa Paul rebuilt on the same site, and this is the house that he built.

What makes this house unique

Quiet location near the end of a dead-end street. Spectacular sunset views over the Gulf. Steps away from the seawall for easy fishing and crabbing right off your private dock. Boat house for one boat.

It is a beautiful property! I have to say that you might want to spray for bugs around the property.

There are a lot of things that aren't really in good working order in the house though. The light in the kitchen takes an hour before it actually turns on. The shower door in the downstairs bathroom does not shut all the way. There is a blind in the upstairs loft that does not open because there is a broken string. The garbage disposal does not work. The icemaker did not work when we got here because it was plugged up, but we fixed that. I don't think the crushed ice part should be used though..... it's still just not totally right. And the only other thing I can think of is that the back bedroom towards the front door has terrible AC. It gets very hot in there. These are all just little things; they did not affect our trip negatively, but I just thought you should know. Thank you for letting us stay!

Great view of the canal and sunsets

  • 5 of 5

This house has a beautiful view. Large house with ample space for our family.

3 bedrooms and 1.5 baths downstairs with a loft bedroom and bathroom upstairs. 2 of the bedrooms have access to the wrap around balcony. The first bedroom (close to the half bath), middle bedroom and loft room are the coolest bedrooms. The 3rd bedroom closest to the washer/dryer is the hottest room. Probably because it gets the afternoon sun and there is no a.c. vent in the hall. Recommend using it to store you things, playroom and bring fans. It did cool off to a tolerant temperature by morning. Anyone sleeping in there should like very warm temperatures. With all the the windows, the house will get pretty warm in the afternoon. Keeping the ac on cool and the ceiling fans on helps a lot.

The bath linens are in the downstairs bathroom and there is plenty of kitchen utensils. The house was clean and all appliances worked fine. I do recommend bringing kitchen counter cleaner, paper towels, toilet paper, blow dryer, your bath essentials and bug spray (if you are on the dock in the evenings). The black flies do exist on and near the water in horseshoe and steinhatchee.

The balcony provides a great view of the sunsets and offers a wonderful evening breeze. There are 4 chairs and wooden swing on the top deck. There is a hammock on the lower deck. There is plenty of room on both decks if you bring extra chairs.

We use a flat bottom boat and watched the tides so we didnt have issues getting in and out of the canal. There are oyster beds in the canal so I dont recommend going across the canal as a short cut to the gulf.

Great location with nice sunset views.

  • 4 of 5

The location and views were great, there was ample beds and bathrooms for our group of 8. The sunset was spectacular every evening and the scalloping was very good! We loved sitting out on the deck in the evenings and we had a perfect view of the Fourth of July fireworks from the deck. The boat lift did not work and leaving the boat tied up to the dock was a concern due to high boat traffic and the low tide that leaves the boat on the floor. Overall we had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

It's ok, but needs some improvement

  • 3 of 5

We had a 25ft. SeeVee (yes, we were aware of the flats/oyster beds/etc, we are river basin flats kind of people) , but had no idea that the boast house belts/pulleys were broken and our offshore boat would be sitting on its side 1/4 of the trip, making us house ridden. If we were made aware, we would have brought one of our flats boats (we have 8 boats). Also, the refrigerator was poor in that it barely keep food cool, the bedroom with the TV (the only bedroom with a TV), was so hot, it was almost unbearable to sleep in. If a house sleeps 12, you assume that there are more then 2 TV's, and that the air conditioning works in all the rooms. I had to keep the windows open and a fan in the hallway to keep the cool air circulating, which was still almost unbearable. As we have 4 kids and didn't want to have to watch Nickelodeon the whole time, so this was an issue. Also, the closet full grocery store was 1 1/2 hours round trip drive. That was not pleasant either. The closet boat bound restaurant is in Steinahatchie ( about a 30-40 min boat ride). We are used to the FL Keys where you can pull up in a multitude of places to eat, this forced me to have to be home cooking and preparing meals everyday of my birthday vacation. Per the neighbors, the restaurants blew down in last year's storm season. No cell service is available except for Verizon, I can see that being an issue for a lot of people. The house itself was clean, quaint, cute and had all kitchenware, etc.. Beautiful house, porch swing, a grill, hammock. The whole yard was sand, which I made it extremely hard to keep up on the floors. We weren't able to tube, and thank goodness we brought all of our water boots, or our kids wouldn't have even been able to kayak. We will be staying closer to the marina the next go round with immediate channel access. If you don't care about going diving/fishing offshore, or bring an airboat/flats boat, don't have kids that require TV, and buy ALL of your food/toiletries in advance, it's a great place. The neighbors were all totally awesome, the dock and fish cleaning station was awesome and there is adequate room to park a trailer at the house. Great water pressure and nice hot water were a bonus. Also, there are more blue crabs than you could ever imagine. On the house bound days, we decided to chicken neck and fishing line it with our nets and made a crab boil.
