My husband came to Juneau as a foreign exchange student from Japan at the age of sixteen. He was the momentary envy of his classmates when during a school assembly it was announced that the country he would be going to was AMERICA. Envy turned to laughter when the state was announced. He wouldn't be going to California or New York but ALASKA. The perceived notion and disappointment of being sent to a frozen wasteland ended when his airplane landed and his love of fishing began. After marrying and living in Japan for several years, we decided to return to Juneau to be closer to family and fishing. My husband is a business consultant. I'm a former teacher who now works seasonally for the Alaska State Legislature. We have three children and a small dog, Mr. Tubbs.
Merigwen Kawakami purchased this apartment in 2007
When looking for a place to build our home we both wanted to have a view of something. This location offered not only a view of water and mountains but the Lemon Glacier, as well as beach front. In the summer we see a lot of rainbows and in winter the Northern Lights. Canadian geese and swans stop by as they migrate. Ducks and Bald Eagles are always about. On occasion bear, porcupine and deer wander through the yard.
In addition to being in a quite location and having a beautiful view, fishing is only minutes away. King salmon fishing can be done off of the rocks at False Outer Point or in the stream at Fish Creek. Starting about mid-August Silver salmon can be caught right outside the front door and then grilled. A small boat is available if you care to row about during high tide. Hiking and the Alpine Zipline are available at nearby Eagle Crest, Juneau's winter time downhill and cross country ski resort. Or do a short hike on Outer Point Loop Trail or Rainforest trail. A twelve minute car ride to the south of Douglas Island puts you at Sandy Beach and the trails that wind through the ruins of the Treadwell gold mine. Or cross the Juneau-Douglas bridge and be in downtown Juneau in 10 minutes to shop, eat, visit museums, historic sites, ride the tram or hike Perseverance and the Mount Roberts Trails. The Mendenhall Glacier about a 20 minute drive, as is Auke Bay.
We had a very nice four night stay at this property. A great view of the water. Owners made it easy to access the property upon arrival and checking out was a breeze. The kitchen had everything we needed for eating in when we wanted to. As a frequent visitor of Juneau, I would definitely say I would stay again.
Merigwen and Tom have created a spacious, new and clean apartment that is great as a place to stay when you are touring around Juneau. They made it easy for us to check in, even though our flight arrived late in the evening. The fully equipped kitchen allowed us to cook for ourselves and the view out the apartment's big windows of eagles and other birds in the water each morning and evening was refreshing. You do need a car to have easy access to everything around Juneau, since the apartment is on Douglas Island, across the bridge. We had lots of privacy, but Merigwen and Tom also surprised us one evening by sharing freshly caught and cooked Dungeness crabs with us! Overall, we enjoyed our stay very much.
Our family of 4 had a wonderful week in Juneau. Mareigwen and Tom were wonderful hosts, very friendly and accommodating! The apartment was clean clean clean! I am a bit of a germophobe and I felt completely comfortable and at home. Everything was provided that we needed and the view was beautiful. We were lucky to have 4 days in a row of no rain and twice a day when the tide went out there were dozens of bald eagles on the bank and soaring past our windows. I believe we could even see a small section of the Juneau ice field from the sofa. We were out exploring the beautiful surroundings of Juneau most of the time but when we were home we found ourselves staring out the windows at the amazing scenery. Laying in bed in the bedroom we could see the mountains as well. Truly paradise!
My wife and I (active 50s) and our 14 year old grandson stayed here for a week in July, spending our days hiking, fishing, and exploring in and around Juneau. Our experience here couldn't have been better - gracious handling of a fishing rod case that we mailed up in advance, great tips for local hikes and destinations, the amazing view out the picture window, convenient location, fast refund of our deposit, and even mailing us a few items that we left in a drawer. We were perfectly self-sufficient with the kitchen and full sized fridge/freezer and the washer/dryer. For less than the price of most motels in town we were able to live like locals for a week in a great town and make some memories for a lifetime. THANK YOU!!
This apartment was clean, well equipped, and convenient. It is a few miles north of the Juneau-Douglas bridge on Douglas Island, but that is just enough "out of the way" to make it a peaceful retreat. The owners, who live on the same property, were very friendly, although we didn't have much interaction with them because everything was organized and obvious. The attic room was a great "bonus" space that our daughters used as their bedroom (instead of the living room hide-a-bed) for half the stay and their private dressing room for the entire time. (It is accessed via a pull down attic ladder.) The view is beautiful, and the changing tides keep it interesting. There were eagles almost constantly in the channel right behind the property and some rested in a tall tree on the property.
Loved the property. It was clean and well appointed. Beautiful location, just far enough away from town to really be able to enjoy the gorgeous Juneau scenery. :) Thank you so much! We will definitely be back!
