This was the second visit to Mullhaven for me and my wife Judy, we stayed for three weeks, Judys' sister and husband joined us for the last two weeks. The property is well equipped for two couples having full kitchen facilities and the use of laundry equipment (essential for longer stays). We made full use of the external covered decking area and the barbecue, there is a dining table indoors but we never used it as we love the outdoors. Me and the brother in law did however occasionally watch the TV in the lounge area if there was any important sport events showing.
The gardens and the essential swimming pool are a real joy, both of which are well maintained by discreet and courteous local workers. It was also reassuring to see a professional pest control contractor employed to handle the interior and exterior of the property. There is a wide range of well established beautiful trees, shrubs, plants and flowers all of which attract a variety of birds but the most intriguing wild life were the monkeys that travelled through the garden most mornings on their hunt for food. They regularly stopped off at Mullhaven to raid the apple and mango trees, they very wisely did not attack the bananas.
The cottage formed the original building, (to which has been added Karins home), and although dated is well decorated and with really comfortable beds. Both the bedrooms are en suite, fitted with air conditioning, ceiling fans and mosquito nets. All of the bedroom windows are covered in a fine gauze so on the advice of Karin we left the windows wide open all night and just operated the ceiling fan without the need of the annoying AC or mozzie net , we slept very well without getting bitten.
It is reassuring to know when staying away from home that you can obtain support, advice, information and help, Karin and Neil were the perfect hosts and did this but still remained quietly in the background. Karin has lots of local knowledge which she shares.
We had a car for the whole period but it is not required. Mullins beach is five minutes walk away. Taxis and buses are cheap (compared to UK) and easy to use.
Get flying fish, shark and swordfish from the fish market on the road to Holetown, be there at 10.00am opening
Try the local take way food sold from the vans (also from Morgans bar, road to Speightstown)
Try a sundown rum punch at the Mullins beach shop
Mombas Bar is a must for food and drinks, better atmosphere than Mullins restaurant.
Hi Karin this is Arnie and Suzanne so we want to thank you for very good time we had at your place and of course what a beautifull island to be ...can't wait to be back when i have a chance .....nice weather nice people nice food and what a beaches ...oh yea next time we go party together lol
Our 6th stay at Mullhaven Cottage and it should be renamed to ''A bit of Heaven in Barbados'', quiet and serene. Although we have been to Barbados 12 time we found this location most suitable to us. It is quiet and relaxing. We love the garden and the many varieties of birds, busy building nests and just generally flying about. We love the humingbirds drinking nectare from the many flowers or protecting their nests. The garden is full of many different flowers, always in bloom and a bowl full of them in your living room, fresh every time the maid comes. The cottage is very clean, kitchen well equipped and beach towels galore. The pool is a good size and a great place to laze around all day long. If you prefer the Sea its less than a five minute walk to Mullins beach where you can swim, tahn or go for a long walk. If you walk back around 4:30 p.m. you may be lucky enough to see the monkies crossing the road.
Karin and Neil are gracious hostws always willing to provide information about shopping and restaurants. A great place to relax, enjoy the garden and work on your tan.
We are 4 Canadians, professionals, in our 50s. This is the 5th year we travelled to a southern locale. Each time we rented a vacation home/condo. Mullhaven Cottage proved as good as any and an excellent choice for our week stay in Barbados.
It is perfectly located a casual 5 minute stroll from beautiful Mullins Beach and the main coastal highway. Buses and taxis are plentiful and easily accessed
from the main road and both are inexpensive. Holetown is 7km south and Speightstown a few kms north(15$ to 20$ US by taxi, 2$ bus). Both have modern shopping and top end restaurants. We rented a car but one is certainly not necessary. Even a taxi ride to Bridgetown, St. Lawrence Gap and Oistins is reasonable from Mullhaven. The car did prove handy for a trip to the East Coast, Bathsheba and Nicholas Abbey but taxis and buses were plentiful in those places too. A taxi ride from the airport is quite reasonable. The hire car was 550$ US for the week, two drivers and included a 125$ deductible, full insurance policy.
The grounds at Mullhaven are beautifully manicured and maintained. The cottage includes a spacious, private, well furnished attached deck. There is also a clean, crystal clear pool. The cottage, attached to the main house, is clean, bright and air conditioned in both bedrooms. The beds are extremely comfortable! (The back bedroom accesses the main house through the main bedroom but that wasn't an issue for us.) The cottage includes all the modern amenities. You will need to purchase supplies for the kitchen and bathrooms. On this point, groceries are expensive compared to Canada. Excellent maid service is provided 3 times per week and clean beach towels are provided daily.
Karin, the owner and her husband Neil are charming and tremendously helpful should you want advice, information or a even a bit of chit chat. On a number of occasions Karin offered excellent restaurant and/or sight seeing suggestions and even made various reservations on our behalf. She seems to have many well placed contacts within the business community and that enhanced our visit considerably (and saved us money as well!) Prior to our arrival, Karin even arranged with us to have groceries on hand for our 1st morning.
We enjoyed our stay at Mullhaven and recommend it for a quality vacation. Generally, we choose a new vacation spot each year but Mullhaven may well be our 1st return venue! Thank you Karin and Neil.
I’m a 52-yr-old professional & my 3rd time to Barbados. I went to relax only to return more stressed. As space is limited, only the key issues are noted.
The cottage is nice but needs a little TLC. It’s very secure-gated with 2 layers of razor wire around the property & Karin wants the cottage chained/locked at all times.
Karin has strict rules not posted or discussed before collecting your non-returnable deposit or arriving. I suggest you have a signed contract even before a deposit is made.
She allows no guests/absolutely no locals which she told us was illegal & threatened her husband was a retired lawyer. After much negotiating; we ended up paying needlessly for 2 additional people for 3 wks. I told Karin my friend would be over only a few times & not once did he spend the night, use the shower or pool. She does not post a check-out time either. She told us 2 wks into our stay we had to be out by 10:00am knowing 10 months in advance our flight left at 4:05pm.
As her home & the cottage are attached, the lack of privacy is a very big issue. People are around constantly for the lawn/garden/bugs/maid & Karin herself giving them orders. I did appreciate the maid service, but it’s 3 times a wk for 2 hrs usually around 4:30pm which is when you are home to shower/change or just to sit/relax. She encourages open windows as she doesn’t mind the talking/music, but this is not the case. You hear her opera music & smell her cigarettes.
The pillows aren’t great so I used one off the other bed. 2 days later it disappeared. 2 rolls of toilet paper were taken, I assume to replace the few strands on her rolls but it is not acceptable to just go into our belongings & take things. It concerns me a great deal knowing on a number of occasions Karin was in the cottage while we were out & makes you wonder what else she went thru. I tied a string on the door one day to prove it.
We paid in advance to use the A/C & on a couple of occasions Karin was outside my window shutting it off. Wi-Fi/internet access didn’t work. The phone is an ext to the main house-you listen to it ring all day starting at 8:00am. After screening the call if it was for us, she would instruct the person to call back & then come over or yell thru the closed window.
You need a checklist dated/signed on arrival as Karin has no file of the issues within the cottage. You are responsible for anything damaged even just general wear/tear. Add everything no matter how small as it is her word against yours.
We visited the Barbados with another couple for 11 nights. Mullhaven Cottage is set in beautiful grounds, attached to a main house occupied by owner, Karin. The location is perfect...5 minute walk to Mullins Beach and restaurant and the bus line which will take you anywhere you want to go. Ideally situated between Holetown and Speightstown which have restaurants, grocery stores, banks, etc. The cottage has everything you need, but be cautioned that you must purchase everything...dish detergent, toiletpaper, laundry soap. Air conditioning is an additional $10 a night per bedroom and wasn't needed in the front bedroom, but definitely required for the back bedroom. Karin was very kind to bring in some requested supplies for our first night and was extremely helpful with recommendations for restaurants and arrangements for activities and taxis. The pool was lovely and we had full use of it. The only downside was the close proximity of the owner as it was hard not to feel like an intruder at times.
The swimming with the turtles on a small 5 man catamaran was definitely a highlight...arranged by Karin. Our favourite restaurants were Angry Annies and Spagos (for pizza)in Holetown, The Fish Pot in Little Good Harbour, and Mangos by the Sea in Speightstown. A car rental for a day or two is recommended to tour the north and east coasts, but beware of the narrow roads, poor signage and very fast Bajan drivers. A definite highlight of the Barbados is the Bajan people...they are friendly, helpful and great ambassadors of their island. We would definitely go back.
Mullins beach, located only 3 minutes walk away and is
one of the most popular beaches on the west coast; the bar is a
great spot to grab a drink, snack or lunch during the day, or to
drop by later on for a romantic sunset dinner or nightcap.
Mullins beach also offers: Full water sports Catamaran Cruises and
trips to swim with the turtles.
