We are a family of four who fell in love with this spectacular region of Italia. Clay is an award winning food - wine - travel photographer working regularly for the leading magazines around the world. Additionally he has published 11 cookbooks and is dedicated to creating the most highly respected food and wine program offered on a small scale in Piedmont, Italy. We are in the process of planing 1 ha of Nebbiolo on the property. Tamar is MA in psychology and loves working with people to help them find balance in their lives. Isabelle (age 10) and Azalia (age 7) love Italia.
Clay and Tamar McLachlan purchased this villa in 2005
This property offers spectacular views, privacy, luxury, and is within close proximity to some of the most inspired food and wine destinations in the world. Authentic and world class!
Complete privacy while being close to incredible, and incredibly delicious and friendly, restaurants and wineries.
My husband, 5-month old baby, and I recently stayed at this fabulous place and absolutely LOVED it! The view is spectacular, and encompasses the Italian Alps as well as amazing hillside villages and deciduous forests. I was astounded at the bountiful wildlife here; I am a biologist in California and was pleasantly surprised by the amazing diversity of both bird and mammal life! We visited wineries in the region and sampled the world-famous Barolo and Dolcetto wines of the region, as well as some local cheeses and dark chocolate. The house far surpassed our expectations - it was historically quaint, yet had completely remodeled amenities like a stainless steel kitchen and giant bathtub in an immaculate bathroom. We enjoyed espressos on the balcony while looking at the terrific view and listening to the birds. We were in paradise and truly cannot recommend this place enough.
I would probably never be able to put in words the amazing piemotese vacation we had. Adoring its wines, cuisine, truffles and charm, we are traveling quite often to this beautiful region. Amazingly, it seems we have finally found the missing link - our "pied a terre" in the region. Clay & Tamar, the owners of a fascinating Villa near Bonvicino, and the Barolo region are an amazing couple. They were so nice as hosts, smiling, caring, well introduced, we felt like coming back home after our long journeys out in the vineyards and villages. the rooms are great, comfortable, spacious, the pool, the pizza oven, the silence, the discussions, did i already say home? I am already planning our visit next year in Piemonte, we will probably visit other wineries, search for new restaurants, but we already have our home.
Fantastic trip to Piemonte!
Our second trip to Piedmont and surely our best. We were hesitant to stray away from a hotel and try renting a Villa in another country but we went for it and are glad we did. The location, amenities and layout of Villa San Lorenzo made it the perfect spot. Adding to this was the invaluable assistance and care Clay took to ensure we had the best trip possible. We are all foodies and immense fans of the region and had prior knowledge to rely on. Clay took this to another level for us. Whether it was finding a chef to cook for us at the house, to the best new place to try for lunch, the best pizza, café, and even down to setting up our truffle hunt. Clay was gracious enough to let us keep the white truffle which we shaved over tajarin we cooked at home later that evening. When we return to Piemonte, we will surely return to Villa San Lorenzo. For now, pictures evoke the great memories paired with an aged glass of Barolo.

I stayed with a group of fellow winemakers for a week in truffle season, and the whole experience was beyond belief. The property is gorgeous, the scenery amazing, the true chef's kitchen fully equipped, the rooms comfortable and charming. Beyond that, Clay is a gracious and informed host (not to mention master pizza chef) who can help introduce you to the food and wine of Piemonte in a way that is very rare, and leads you to the essence of the place - from pasta classes, truffle hunting, chocolate class, as well as dinner reservations, winery recommendations, etc. I can't imagine a better place to stay.
It sounds pretty cliche, but truer words cannot be spoken about our wonderful trip to Villa San Lorenzo di Bonvicino. From the moment we booked our trip (on a relatively blind internet search), Clay Thompson took complete care of ensuring that this would be an unforgettable adventure. We gathered friends and family to celebrate my husband's 40th birthday. Clay arranged our entire week-long stay to include exclusive winery tours/tastings, dinners, lunches which allowed us to get a complete flavor for the people and the rich culture of Piemonte region of Italy. The property itself is a magical restoration! Plenty of room for the 12 of us to spread out, but quaint enough to enjoy time in the common areas. Situated on a hill with views of the Italian Alps, the scenery could not have been more picturesque. Put your entire holiday planning in Clay's hands and he will ensure a most extraordinary vacation!
I/we visited and rented the Villa late last year, 2015. I was visiting with a fellow winemaking friend from Friuli. I am a winemaker from Napa Valley and we both are incredibly passionate about food and this was not our first visit to Piedmont. However, this was our best. Truly outstanding hospitality, the location with its natural beauty, tranquility, as well as its close proximity to some of the best restaurants we visited on the trip. The Villa itself was everything we’d hoped for and we felt it was an exceptional value - all amenities were spotless, modern and available to us and the main level kitchen was better than most kitchens in small restaurants! The hosts, Clay and Tamar, went out of their way to make us feel at home and to ensure we had knowledge of all the best places to go and they made sure that we had everything we needed for a perfect stay including the proper recommendations for wineries, winemakers and restaurants, sommeliers and chef's alike. I look forward to a return trip later this year, however, I shouldn't say this (so we can guarantee getting the rental!) in November and December during white truffle season, when Piemonte is at its height of celebration and warmth. Can't wait to go back.
We booked Villa San Lorenzo during Truffle Hunting season for a friend's 40th birthday and had a fantastic time in this villa. Our group of 16 was large, but the layout of the villa rooms gave everyone space and privacy outside of the large common area with amazing windows looking out to the lovely villa grounds. Every room has a designated bathroom, which is key to confort. Also, the kitchen is a foodie heaven, so much that our group mostly stayed in at nights to cook Vs going out to all the great restaurants in the region. The owners, Clay and Tamar have done an exceptional job with this property. Most importantly, they are amazing hosts, taking care of a multitude of details and requests for such as large group, including: wine tasting tours, pre-arrival food shopping, pasta cooking lessons at the Villa with a local chef (best pasta dish we ate during our whole trip was part of this experience) and a lovely truffle hunt with an authentic truffle hunter. Highly recommend this villa to both large groups and families looking to spend quality time in Piedmonte.
Villa San Lorenzo di Bonvicino is 4km from the beautiful hilltop village of Bossolasco where you will discover spectacular Alpine views and a delicious cafe and chocolate shop. The village of Dogliani is 7km away where you can get absolutely everything you will need during your stay from small family run food shops to large grocery stores that have everything. The village of Monforte d'Alba begins 12km from the house where you can discover with your own eyes the most beautiful wine country landscape in Italy, as well as the most prolific wines of Italy in the Barolo zone. An hour by car will take you to the Mediterranean near Savona or to Turin with it's 16km of Portico covered walkways. 90 Minutes will bring you to the the Italian Alps in Limone Piemonte.
