We are lifelong summer residents, enjoy sharing our experiences with newcomers to Beaver Island.
Mary Beth & Michael Lyons purchased this apartment in 1982
Apartment is well-appointed, completely new in 2014. Screened in porch and open deck, fully equipped kitchen.
Private, secluded, yet close to town. Screened-in porch feels like a "tree-house"
The apartment is perfect for 2. It really gives you the felling of a tree house, especially with the screened-in porch. After Labor Day, the island becomes almost deserted. There are still many of the local people around, but not many tourist. We were able to explore the island privately. Checked out the beaches which we had to ourselves. Iron Ore beach which was my wife's favorite. I liked the even more secluded Cable's Bay which is only accessible by a 0.2 mile foot path and bridge. The inland lakes have great fishing holes for large & small mouth bass and large blue gill. The owner took us out in his small boat and my wife and I caught about 20 fish in a 2 hr. time period on plastic worms and spinner lures. My wife actually caught a 12" Blue Gill which is huge for a Blue Gill. The owner couldn't stop talking about it. We would have done a lot more fishing but the Water Sports shop was closed. They rent out all the boats on all the lakes. Like I said, the island becomes deserted the day after Labor Day. Next time I will strap my canoe to my car. The island is perfect for cyclists who like trail riding such as the C&O path through Maryland. One word of advice, be sure to book your ferry far in advance, especially during the summer months. We arrived on a Tuesday and planned to leave Saturday but the ferry was booked Saturday so we had to ferry our car back Friday, which worked out just fine. We just rented a junker 1995 Chevy Tracker and went to the beach Friday. Then we watched the sun set on the west side of the Island at Donegal Bay. Absolutely the best sun set I've ever seen. The best part about the Island is the peace, quite, and tranquility. I've been to small secluded towns in Italy where it was tranquil, but now I've found a secluded place in my own country. A home away from home. The perfect get-a-way.
My wife and I stayed here at the end of August just before Labor Day weekend. In my opinion, the apartment is nicer than the pictures make it look. It is tastefully decorated and has nice furniture. As others have mentioned, the screened-in porch was very pleasant. Overall it is perfect for two people.
Being right on Font Lake was great. We rented a boat and motor in town for three days and went fishing and exploring on the lake. Font lake for the most part is shallow but beautiful. (If you're really serious about fishing, the lakes on the south end of the island, especially Lake Geneserath, are much deeper and better for fishing than Font Lake).
The location was great for us, as the property is fairly private and wooded but still close to town if you need something. An added bonus was that Sunset Corner was just a little further to the west down Donegal Bay Rd. and was the perfect place to watch the sunset across Lake Michigan with two folding chairs and a cooler. We lived the Corona beer commercials at sunset there on more than one occasion.
The owner also couldn't have been nicer. We had a few questions before we rented and after. She always replied the same day and usually within a few hours.
One last item - If you have never been to Beaver Island before (like us), you'll find out right away that everyone waves at you when driving around - and I mean EVERYBODY. The people there are great.
My wife and I had a great time at the little apartment on the lake. The whole place was quiet and peaceful. We enjoyed the view of the lake and canopy down on the dock. The screened in porch was great for relaxing and enjoying meals.
Very nice clean rental. Saw 2 Bald Eagles kayaking the lake. Close to town but tranquil.
The apartment was just what we expected, and a pleasure to stay in. The screened in porch in particular was a very nice place to spend time. Most of the time the only sounds were the loons on the lake and the wind in the trees. Very relaxing. and the Lyons were gracious hosts the few times we bumped into them. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to get away from it all for a little while. The only minor complaint I would make is that the bed is kind of firm. I like a soft bed. But that's just me. Thanks for a great place to stay.
We enjoyed the apartment above the garage. Close to the lakes. Very neat and clean. Loved the screened in porch. Only problem was the TV never did work.
Beaver Island is the largest island in the Beaver Archipelago in northern Lake Michigan. Come and explore the islands, bass and salmon fishing in Lake Michigan. Scuba diving at numerous sunken wrecks of the Great Lakes. Enjoy fishing at several other inland lakes on the island. Boat, bike and car rentals in town. Beaver Island has an interesting history with local museums.
Enjoy homemade waffle cones and ice cream at Daddy Franks.
Approx 26 miles of bicycle and birding trails. On rainy days, enjoy the Toy Store and Museum or especially a good book on the screened-in porch!
