About George & Elisa Doktorczyk

We are George & Lisa Doktorczyk, the proud and lucky owners of "Hale Akala", aka "The Sunsets House".

We first visited the islands in 1996. Over the next 5 years or so, we spent time as tourists in Maui, Oahu, Hawaii, Lanai and Kauai.

In 2000, during our 3rd visit to the Big Island, we decided it suited us the best. We realized that the fun things we like to do were more available and accessible here; the weather on the Kona side was more to our liking and, most important, folks here, both locals and visitors are warmer and friendlier. So we started talking about how great it would be to retire on the Kona Coast and started making plans for our next visit.

On our next trip in January of 2001, we came back to the Kona for a 2 week get-away from the hustle, bustle pace of SoCal. Before heading back to the mainland, chit chat about retiring evolved into putting together a plan. A friend helped us find land and we started looking for an architect and a builder. The rest is history!

When we announced to friends and family we were retiring in Hawaii most of them thought we were a little wacky and too young to retire! And we couldn't blame them. After all, we were city folks with good jobs and a large network of family and friends in California.

Well, here we are almost 20 years later!. We lived in Kona full time until 2013 years when we were seduced by the call of grandchildren. So we modified things to allow us to spend time with the kids, family and friends in California. We now spend about half our time in a 55+ neighborhood in Winchester, a small, rural town in the Inland Empire about half way between Temecula, Riverside and Palm Springs.

We're blessed in that we really like both places, but if we ever have to narrow it back to one or the other, it's no contest and Kona wins.

Why George & Elisa Doktorczyk chose Kailua-Kona

After giving notice at work and letting the bosses know that we had decided to move to Kona, we went house hunting. We could not find anything we liked and could afford (we wanted it all..... spacious, great view, close to town, etc) and were about to give up when one of our new friends found a lot for us. To make a long story short, we bought the lot, designed the house and finished it in 2004. Building a house is not for timid (this was our 3rd one and after the last one we had vowed never do it again. It's particularly challenging here in Hawaii. But, we're happy we did. It turned out better than we had imagined. We love the Hawaiian people, their culture and their friendliness.... and we're in a nice upscale area with great neighbors/friends.

What makes this house unique

The place is a joy to be in. When we're here, we're always busy doing fun things. We both enjoy the outdoors, the beauty of the tropics and all things beach and ocean.

We are both warm weather people but did not want to be right at the shore as it is hotter and more humid than our location. Sunsets House is at about 700 ft. elevation so the trade winds and the elevation keep it cooler and less humid.

Typically, down by the water and in Kona town it can be 10-15 degrees warmer and 10-20% more humid than at our property.

Wonderful home for our vacation stay in Kona

  • 5 of 5

We had two families of four stay at George's gorgeous home for a week and thoroughly enjoyed it. The home is spacious, lots of space upstairs and downstairs for the teenagers to hang out and the adults to do their own thing. The balcony view is great, along with sunsets everyday.

George was very accommodating and the house has a fully-equipped kitchen and dishware. The location is not far from downtown Kona and very convenient.

Mahalo, George!

Too hot to handle!!!!

  • 1 of 5

Needed to buy 2 additional fans to try and cool the house so it was livable. Was not successful even though all windows were open and outside blinds were down in the afternoon. Master bedroom was the hottest and was extremely difficult to sleep. Strongly suggest finding a property a couple of hundred feet higher to get the cooling needed to enjoy your visit. Extremely disappointing for a 32 day stay.

Owner's Response: Aloha Mark, We feel terrible that you were disappointed with your stay. September is often the hottest month in Kona. Had you checked, you would have learned that the average daytime highs are typically in the mid to high 80's and that at night it rarely drops below 70F. This September was actually 2-3 degrees cooler than the norm. At our elevation the temps were lower by another 3-5 degrees. That puts it in the low 80s which is OK with most folks. The big difference last month was the humidity. It was higher than normal by about 20% and that can be tough on folks who are not used to tropical climates. In the 4 years we've been doing this, we've had 14 guests stay with us in the summer. No one is ever complained about 'too hot' and, more to the point, they all rated us a 5 (please check our reviews on VRBO, HomeAway, Airbnb and VacationRentals.com). Prior to that, we were full time residents and spent 13 summers at the house and never felt the discomfort alluded to in your review. It's a crying shame you threw us under the bus with the terrible rating because of the weather. Particularly since you never reached out to us about the problem. We would have gone to great lengths to help remedy the situation. Moreover, your review does not speak to the property but rather to things we cannot control combined with a lack of research on your part. Having said that, your critique is appreciated. It's got us thinking and looking into A/C. The idea was very short lived. We moved to Kona because we love the warm and not so humid climate of West Hawaii. We sincerely hope that you do better on your next vacation. Best Regards, George & Elisa

Kona, Hawaii

Nice, nice place.... Great value!

  • 5 of 5

The VRBO listing does not do this place justice. Everything was better than depicted. We absolutely loved our stay here. The hosts were exceptionally helpful. They are very knowledgeable and friendly and made the visit to Kona and the Big Island more enjoyable by sharing their knowledge. We enjoyed speaking with him and listening to his great suggestions about what to do on the island. The home was very comfortable, very clean house with everything furnished. The neighborhood was upscale and quiet. The neighbors were friendly. Doc and Lisa have put some thought into making guests feel at home. Their effort to make the stay as good as possible showed! We've stayed in dozens of vacation rental homes in locations around the world. This one ranks in the top 5% and we are planning to visit again next year. Many thanks to 'Doc' and Lisa for their wonderful hospitality.
