Big on space, low on quality

  • 3 of 5

A great base to explore the wonderful coastline in this part of the world and all it has to offer and certainly no shortage of space for big groups, but the photos are taken a long time ago.

A huge chalet bungalow with a cheap DIY conversion to a 'cash cow' holiday let. My stay was hugely enhanced by the fact that I wasn't paying. Better is available for less.

The large decking area is still just about strong enough to hold you up and the weeds growing through it add a bit of charm. The gardens were very well kept with all the debris and rubbish carefully piled up out of sight at the back of the house.

Internally the electric radiators provided more than adequate heat and most of them remained fixed to the hollow studwork walls. 'Find the fuse box' was a great game for the kids every time the power tripped.

Whilst counting the missing down-lighters and looking at the holes where the smoke alarms used to be, I noticed the ceiling damage in the kitchen (from a roof leak) had been fairly well repaired and the paint almost matched. The kitchen units themselves weren't delaminating too badly and the two tired dishwashers proved useful, but not both at the same time. The plastic garden furniture alongside the spacious dining table was surprisingly effective.

The half height net on the table tennis table made it nice and easy for the kids, and although grandma found one side of it a bit too high for her jigsaw the other side was much lower and just right. The pool table was much used and great fun, even a novice being able to curve the ball nicely on the natural undulations of the table.

The MDF bookshelves bowed nicely under the weight of the excellent selection of DVDs and books.

The bedrooms have superb sea views and opening the windows let in just about the right amount of fresh air to take away the smell of the mildew on the duvets.

There is a very convenient study at the back of the house and once the stack of garden furniture and broken TV had been relocated the small desk proved a nice sanctuary. Keeping the kids off their i-pads was no problem, either end of the house being Wi-Fi free zones.

Watergate Bay with its endless stunning beach and numerous and varied eateries is only a ten minute walk away, every trip being completed with a punch of the air, the busy and narrow road having been successfully negotiated.

Owner's Response: Oh dear. Perhaps you should try the south of France or the Caribbean next time ? (But you might have to pay for that)

Excellent house for large group

  • 5 of 5

The house is in a fantastic location - it is literally 2 minutes from Newquay airport and you can walk to Watergate Bay in 10 minutes. Drives out to Padstow, Newquay and other bays very easy.

The whole booking process through the owner was simple and efficient.

The house itself is deceptively large, with 7 good sized bedrooms.

We were a party of 11 and there was more than enough space for all of us.

The kitchen is large and was able to seat all for dinner which was nice, and there is a nice outdoor space for BBQ's and social gatherings.

The pool table, bar area and table tennis table got the most use and provided us with many hours of amusement.

There is also a nice lounge with SKY tv and comfortable furniture.

Would highly recommend this house for group/large family gatherings

Family 50th Wedding Anniversary get together

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this beautiful house for my parents 50th Wedding Anniversary, a party of 12 adults, 2 young children and a baby. As soon as we unlocked the door we were blown away by the size, decoration and layout of the property. The bedrooms were well decorated and comfortable, as were the many bathrooms. The hot water was constant and the heating was adequate when needed. There is a spacious, well appointed kitchen with enough space to relax in the other downstairs rooms also. It is set in a lovely garden with a beautiful sea view from the front facing bedrooms. The owner was constantly in touch with us and was quick to refund the deposit on our arrival home. This is the place to go for a large party in Cornwall, providing you respect the property. We will be returning at some time in the future and have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone.

Great house, highly recommend!!!

  • 5 of 5

Stayed with a group of friends for 4 nights, had a great time. All the rooms are very nice, and the facilities in the house are excellent. The decking on the front is brilliant for when the sun comes out.

Short 10 minute walk down to the beach at Watergate Bay and only a 10-15 minute drive to Newquay.

Would highly recommend this house for groups and families, we would love to go back.

An impressive stay at the Blue house

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for family holiday accommodation for a Golden Wedding Celebration. There would be thirteen in the party with ages running from eighty to five. One problem we had was that we required individual bedrooms. Many large holiday homes had dormitory type bedrooms, however the Blue House was ideal, having seven bedrooms.

On arrival we found an impressive large house with blue painted weatherboarding. The gravel drive easily took our four cars. We entered the large light airy hall which gave a nice first impression. Turning to the left we found a games room with table tennis table, television and a selection of games for all ages.

Beyond the games room was the very large kitchen dining room. A large refectory type table with bench seats was of an ample size to seat all the family. There was also a seating area where the family tended to congregate whilst meals were being prepared which was a nice touch. In the kitchen area a central island provided ample work surface as well as the surrounding work surfaces. A large American style frig-freezer provided both food storage and supplied chilled water and ice. A wine chiller was fitted under the central island. Two dishwashers were provided although due to the plumbing could only be used one at a time but this was not a problem.

Ample crockery. glassware and cutlery was available. The family cooks did not want for any cooking equipment. A utility room leading off the kitchen contained the washing machine, drier, ironing board, etc as well as a toilet Overall we were extremely impressed with the domestic set-up.

Returning to the hall, there was a comfortable sitting room at the rear of the building, with ample settees and armchairs. A large television with Sky completed the room and off the room was a small office with access to the internet.

To the left of the hall was a room containing a small snooker table and a bar. We did not use this much but could see that it would be popular with somewhat lower age group. Beyond this room was the first of the seven bedrooms together with a separate bathroom.

Going up the main staircase there was a corridor running almost the whole of the house. At either end there were two en-suite bedroom and mid-way were two more bedrooms serviced with a separate bathroom. At the right end of the house was a separate floor containing two more bedrooms and a bathroom reached by a second staircase.

Watergate Bay is beautiful and The Blue House is an absolutely fabulous place to stay. There were 13 of us for a Hen Weekend and the house is big enough to provide personal space but homely enough to accomodate us for meals together and a cosy night in on one of the nights. Really nicely decorated and had everything we needed. Can't recommend this place enough!
