Best location to see the wonders of the black hills

  • 5 of 5

If you want to explore the wonders of the Black hills, Ghost Canyon Ranch is the place to stay. Nestled only 15 miles from Mt Rushmore and a few minutes from the visitors center of Custer park you can easily navigate your way from this central location.

Laura and Trevor were incredibly hospitable - with staring your day off with a delicable breakfast, just what you need for hiking.

Not only is the location great you have your own private view of nature in their fields on their ranch. Sit outside and enjoy a cozy fire on the patio while watching deer, wild turkey, their beautiful horses and much more.

Would highly recommend Ghost Canyon Ranch. Thank you both for a memorable trip.

Nice folks, beautiful property --- but mostly dissatisfied with overall room experience

  • 2 of 5

While Laura and Trevor were warm and welcoming throughout the reservation process, and had prepared breakfast for us along with the other guests, my wife and I were mostly dissatisfied with the lack so many basic room amenities. Missing items include a coffee/tea service that contains regular (not flavored) coffee, tea bags, sugar, cream, stirrers, napkins. No microwave oven to heat up water for tea. There were no soaps or shampoos for the bathroom. No chest of drawers to unpack our suitcase or hang our clothes. And while the sliding backdoor provided an option of having fresh air, there was no screen to prevent insects from flying into our room, including wasps, bees, moths and biting flies. The towels in the bathroom didn't seem to be freshly washed and had an odor, and were never replaced even though the welcome letter indicated these would be done after two full days. While the owners are nice and the property is spacious, well maintained, and quite beautiful, not having these basic hotel items included makes this a deal breaker.

Great Experience!

  • 5 of 5

We are so happy we chose to stay here. Trevor and Laura were so kind, and helpful!! The space was much larger than we had anticipated, and it had everything we needed. The property was beautiful!! We definitely recommend Ghost Canyon Ranch to anyone staying in the area.

farm with large alpine meadows in mountain valley

  • 5 of 5

Minutes from the scenic Iron Mountain and Needles Highway mountain roads. Close to Sylvan Lake and the hiking trails to Harney Peak or Needles Spires. Make a fire at night to roast marshmallows. Hot tub under the stars. Very few bugs.

Eat dinner at the Sylvan Lake Lodge: Not real expensive but first class dining.

Hike the trail that leads downstream from the Sylvan Lake dam: Bring drinking water.

Hike to either Harney Peak or Needles Spires: Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy views.

Swim at "The Hippie Hole" a secret swimming hole in Fosters Gulch about 8 miles north of the farm. You have to climb down over a lot of rocks to get down into the gulch and there are no signs to identify where you need to go. Someone loaded a video of the swimming hole on youtube. Only go when there hasn't been much rain. A waterfall dumps into the pool and the kids jump in from the cliffs bordering each side.
