About David Kimball

Retired journalist and businessman. Grew up in Minnesota. Wife is Xocthitl ("so-chill") from State of Sinaloa. I have lived in Mexico for 30 years. We enjoy the cabin immensely and also enjoy renting it to people who share our enthusiasm for nature, birds, peace and tranquility.

David Kimball purchased this cabin in 2013

Why David Kimball chose Jalisco

It is an especially beautiful cabin in an oak forest. At present it is alone on a 17 acre tract of rolling foothills with beautiful natural contours.

What makes this cabin unique

The location is strategic for many purposes: Just a couple of minutes drive to El Tuito

for supplies or good restaurants; just 45 minutes from the beautiful Pacific Coast beaches where you can dine on fresh-caught lobsters and oysters in open air beach restaurants; or you can be in the "city" (Puerto Vallarta) in just one hour. The weather is as close to perfect as one can find anywhere in the world. Cooler and drier than Vallarta.

Cordial Greetings!

This email is in reference to our stay at Tierra Alta a couple of months ago where my family( my wife and two children 4/2 years of age) and can't forget their nanny, all went up for the first time to Tierra Alta per a recommendation of a friend whom had stayed at the cabin and highly encouraged me to reserve, I did...and I must say WE were impressed. The cabin was absolutely beautiful, the location was perfect, a few minutes from the town of Tuito.

I recall stepping into the cabin and the sense of "home" sunk in, the decoration are modern and rustic with a mix, all perfectly designed...I don't know if David is the decorator or Xochilt but my applause...the kitchen was spacious, the living room just right, but the rooms were amazing, I layed on the bed and was able to have a view of the mountains, I opened the window and felt the fresh breeze and the smells of nature succumbed me. I was instantly relaxed, and elated it wasn't humid as it was back in Puerto Vallarta.

Once we unpacked It was time to enjoy some running around with my children and did we have a blast, the property was huge, we had so much room to play, and the safe keeper Don Chava? I think was his name, had some puppies that my kids fell in love with, up until then dogs were not considered but once I saw my children running around the property with the puppy "manchas" which is patches in English, I knew a dog is now a must. Needless to say, the swings in the back were a hit for my kids, the walkways were amazing for a nature walk with my wife having alone time.

Since it rained the first day we were able to stay inside the cabin or on the balcony sitting down drinking some coffee, listening to the rain drops and smelling fresh dirt. The second day, we got sun, and I put my BBQ skills to the test, enjoying the porch and all the great patio furniture, while my BRAVE kids jumped in the ice cold pool, the only downfall, we sat and ate some carne asada. I must say it was a great experience, the cabin is beautiful, comfortable, and has everything, We came as a renter and I'm working extra hours to see if I can budget in a purchase within the end of the year. Having it physically there really changed my outlook as imagining a getaway cabin one day, thank you David and Xochitl for your hospitality you have a beautiful property and wish you all the best of luck, thanks for the idea of owning a cabin one day.

Magical Place

  • 5 of 5

Dear David and Xochitl,

Tierra Alta is one of the most spectacular places I've ever seen and got lucky enough to stay in! Complete with your dream cabin, perfect weather and only 1 hour from Puerto Vallarta! Both of you are so helpful and your onsite staff made sure we had everything we needed to feel comfortable. This is luxury living in real Mexico!! The town of El Tuito is so lovely and the cabin is a great little walk away from the center. We loved all the amenities in the kitchen, you have everything you need to stay in and cook up a great meal or venture out to enjoy a meal at a local restaurant. Relaxing on the cabin's patio was the highlight... in the morning with a cup of coffee, in the afternoon to catch a cool breeze after hiking in the warm sun and of course to enjoy sunset pink skies while relaxing into the evening with the night sounds of crickets.

Tierra Alta is paradise in the magical mountains of Mexico!

Viva!

Tierra Alta Cabin Rental

Tierra is only an hour away from Puerto Vallarta, but it feels like a world apart. No traffic, no heat or humidity, Tierra Alta is the alternative to the crowded beach scene of downtown Vallarta. Yet it’s close enough for day trips to the “big city”.

Tierra Alta is in the oak forested foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains. The town of El Tuito is just one mile away and there are plenty of simple but very good local restaurants and bars to sustain you while you are touring the area.

Just 45 minutes due west you will encounter the extraordinary Pacific Coast of Mexico at the towns of Tehuamixtle and Mayto. You can swim at Tehua (unlike many other Pacific beaches where the currents are dangerous). The road to Tehua and Mayto is about half paved and half “not” but it’s passable. The peak experience at Tehua is the food: fresh lobsters, oysters and red snapper. Very much worth the drive, which is beautiful.

Your cabin was built less than 3 years ago and has all of the conveniences. Its kitchen is fully equipped.

And you will find the bedrooms cool and inviting with the décor following the local use of strong colors in interior design. There is satellite TV, a stacked washer-drier and plenty of local help eager to wash dishes or take on any other domestic chore.

Mainly, Tierra Alta is all about tranquility. A hike in the forest, a dip in the heated pool. A leisurely hour or two in the hammock on the deck with a good book. At sunrise, don’t be surprised if you are greeted by the local deer before they skitter back up to the mountains.

The experience of Tierra Alta is unique. Don’t miss it.
