A large 4 bedroomed stone farmhouse in rural SW France.

Gite Le Pastourel is a large, 4 bedroom, stone farm house located on the edge of a small hamlet, Soula, in Ariege, SW France. The house is positioned in nearly 2 acres of garden and grounds on a sunny south facing slope with impressive views of the high Pyrenees and the borders with Spain and Andorra. The house offers well finished, high quality accommodation with large, airy rooms in a tranquil setting. Our emphasis is on quality and comfort and included in the rental are many extras such as fluffy white bathrobes, a generous welcome basket of supplies, and hand wash in the bathrooms. It has a large sun terrace for outdoor dining, sunbathing or taking in the views and a mature garden with plenty of shaded seating. There is ample onsite parking and miles of walking routes from the house. Perfect for a relaxing break from a busy working life.

The accommodation is set on three floors and outside the high season, it is available as a 2 bedroom, 1 shower-room house for a lower rental cost. The large bedrooms are flexible: one has a king sized bed and two rooms are available as either twins or doubles (one room has a double and a single bed and the other has two singles which can be locked together as a super-king on request). The fourth bedroom with two single beds, has a sauna for use during the winter. The house has been furnished to a high standard with a mixture of the contemporary and antique for a stylish look and all of the beds have deep and comfortable pocket sprung mattresses. The kitchen is fully equipped for self catering with a Falcon double oven range with a 5 ring ceramic hob. The living room is well equipped with a log burner, French satellite TV and Blu-ray player and a range of DVDs, games and books as well as information and local maps showing walks in the area. There are no hidden rental fees and such things as cleaning and linen are included in the rental cost.

Soula is positioned in a quiet valley between Foix, the capital town of Ariege, and Lavelanet. It is well placed for visiting the high mountains to the south and the spa town of Ax-les-Thermes as well as the medieval towns and villages to the north such as Carcassonne and Mirepoix. The Mediterranean is only 2hrs drive to the east or you can visit Lac Montbel just half an hour away with its water sports and freshwater beach area. Activities nearby include walking, cycling, horse-riding and mountaineering. The nearest ski resorts are 45 and 50 minutes drive away for winter sports.

Alternatively, for those wanting something a little less active there are several excellent town markets nearby each week; plenty of restaurants; vineyards for wine tasting or you can just relax in the hammock in the orchard and pretend to read your book!

About Ann O'Leary

Ian and Ann bought Le Pastourel in 2014 and moved out to France to find a new life at a slower pace in a beautiful location. After a short trial season in 2015, the gite will open for the first time in 2017. Ann and Ian live in the small house next to the gite and are on hand to provide help or advice if required.

Why Ann O'Leary chose Soula

Soula is ideally positioned in a tranquil valley and we were blown away by the views of the mountains when we first saw the house. It was love at first sight. The house is convenient for local facilities yet tucked away in a quiet corner and as enthusiastic skiers, we can reach two good downhill ski resorts in under an hour with many more within 2 to 3 hours. There are many pleasant walks from the house and the surrounding countryside is rich with native plants and wildlife.

What makes this farmhouse unique

A key feature of Gite Le Pastourel is the view from the terrace and gardens over Val de Lesponne and beyond to the high Pyrenees and the Spanish border. The location is tranquil and is an excellent base for walking, cycling and bird watching. This is our home and we have improved the gardens and decorated and updated the gite to provide a high level of comfort and a cosy welcome using quality fittings, paintings and furniture. We have paid much attention to details adding to the enjoyment of our guest's time here such as fluffy bath robes, toiletries in the bathrooms and a welcome basket of essential supplies. The mature garden provides a mixture of shade and sun for picnics and relaxing and the huge sun terrace is fitted out with sun loungers, shaded seating and a table and chairs for outdoor dining.

There are many holiday attractions within an hour or so from the gite including historic castles and towns such as Carcassonne and the thermal spa town of Ax-Les Thermes. Lakeside amenties and swimming are available at Lac Montbel just 25 minutes drive away. And there are excellent weekly markets at Mirepoix, Foix and Lavelanet. The mountains provide walking and wildlife observation or relax and enjoy the view from the mountain railway - Le Train Jaune (the yellow train). There are several commercial mountain biking areas nearby and two extensive flat, cycle routes - Les Voies Vertes - which follow the routes of old railway lines. You can try horse riding, kayaking or walking with donkeys and there are a number of prehistoric sites and geological features to visit. Alternatively, there is the hammock in the orchard!

Wunderbare Landschaft und erholsame Ruhe

Wir (2 Personen und 1 Hund) haben drei herrliche Ferien- und Arbeitswochen im Gite 'Le Pastourel' verbracht. Das Haus befindet sich in erhöhter Südlage mit einem phantastischen Ausblick auf eine sanfte Wiesen- und Hügellandschaft im Vordergrund und die hohen Pyrenäengipfel im Hintergrund. Das Highlight ist eine riesige Terrasse mit ganztägiger Sonne. Weitere Sitzgelegenheiten und eine Hängematte gibt es in einem kühlen Garten mit zahlreichen alten Bäumen und Obstbäumen, deren Früchte genutzt werden können. Das Gelände ist an allen Seiten so zugewachsen, dass die Nachbarn völlig ausgeblendet sind. Viele blühende Büsche, Blumen und ein großes Lavendelbeet bereichern das Ambiente.

Das Haus ist ca. 150 Jahre alt, hat großen Charme und ist in einem gepflegtem Zustand. Alle wichtigen Dinge sind vorhanden. Luxus auf den man angesichts der wunderbaren Terrasse auch gut verzichten kann: Whirlpool und Sauna im Dachgeschoss. Zum Grundstück gehören mehrere Katzen, ein Pferd und zwei Esel. Vom Nachbarn hört man ab und zu einen Hahn krähen, ansonsten herrscht erholsame Stille. Wir haben häufig Milane und gelegentlich Geier beobachten können, abends Rehe und Wildschweine am Waldrand.

Es gibt zahlreiche Spaziergangsmöglichkeiten direkt vom Haus aus, außerdem in der näheren Umgebung sehr schöne Wanderwege auf die Mittelgebirgszüge und den 1000 m hohen Hausberg. Bis zum Fuß der Pyrenäen benötigt man 30 Fahrminuten. Viele Einkaufsmöglichkeiten gibt es in Foix (15 min.) und Lavlanet (20 min.). Die englische Vermieterin wohnt in einem Anbau und ist extrem nett. Sie bleibt ganz im Hintergrund, ist bei Bedarf aber immer präsent und hilfsbereit.

Wegen der wunderbaren Aussicht haben wir meist selbst gekocht. Empfehlenswert ist aber das Restaurant "Les Sapins" (ca. 10 min.).

Wir können den Gite 'Le Pastourel' uneingeschränkt empfehlen und werden gerne wiederkommen.

This area of mountains, valleys and woodlands is rich in wildlife and birdlife and has many way-marked walking routes and local circular walks to explore from easy strolls to high mountain routes using mountain cabins. It has a rich and fascinating history from paeleolithic cave paintings; through the Cathars of medieval times to more recent twentieth century events. There are many castles, museums and old towns to visit. Through the summer months the region hosts many festivals and open-air music and cultural events as well as traditional and contemporary events including the Merens horse fair in September and the Tour de France in July. Ax-Les-Thermes, only 50 minutes drive away is the location of natural hot springs and you can enjoy the benefits of the hot water spa and treatments all year round. There are many activity centres nearby including horse riding and mountain biking and the Corbieres wine region is about 40 minutes drive away. Limoux is the centre of the region's well kept secret of blanquette - a sparking white wine to challenge champagne! Carcassonne cite is an hour away and a World Heritage Site which should not be missed.

Refundable Damage Deposit £223.21
Stay tax £0.54 per night, per person. This amount will be due to the owner upon arrival. Does not apply to children under 18 years.

The booking deposit is non-refundable. The balance of the rental fee will be due 45 days before arrival date. See the rental agreement / terms and conditions for details of the cancellation policy. In brief, the intial payment of 20% is non-refundable; for cancellation more than 30 days before arrival date, a 40% refund of the total rental fee will be made; for cancellations made less than 30 days before arrival date no refund is payable unless the house can be re-rented in which case 100% of the rental fee can be refunded. It is recommended that the client takes out travel insurance to cover the cost of unavoidable late cancellations. Non payment of the balance at 45 days will result in the rental period being re-advertised. Normal changeover day is Saturday but please contact the owner if you require a different changeover day especially outside high season or for the cost of short stays (minimum 3 days). The house is also available as a two bedroom property for a reduced fee - please contact owner for prices.
