Overview

About the property

Spacious Luxury: 2 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Retro-styled, in Rural Worcestershire

The Nest at Winnall is a unique, luxury self-catering holiday cottage dating from the early 19th Century, situated close to the beautiful Wyre Forest in the heart of rural Worcestershire, England. The cottage sits adjacent to Winnall House, an imposing Grade II listed Georgian manor farmhouse, and is nestled in a small valley of unspoilt countryside which slopes down to the River Severn.

The Nest has been lovingly restored by its family owners, retaining many period cottage features but with all the modern luxuries you would expect. The interior has a chic retro design feel, with many vintage details, so you can truly 'step back in time' and forget all the stresses of daily life during your stay here.

On your arrival at The Nest, a walled gateway will take you through to your own private, enclosed courtyard garden. The patio area has been made from original quarry tiles reclaimed from the old cottage floor, and with its atmospheric lighting it is just perfect for secluded evening barbeques.

Sleeping up to four people, The Nest at Winnall has two bedrooms - one with a king size bed, the other with twin beds. Both have 1000 pocket sprung mattresses as well as soft cotton goosefeather and down duvets and pillows. One room has views over the private courtyard and the other looks out over the lawns of the main house.

There are two bathrooms in The Nest - a spacious and modern ensuite for the king room and a large family bathroom which also serves as an ensuite for the twin room. This has a roll-top bath and original Victorian washstand. Both bathrooms have fully enclosed showers with vintage-style fittings, heated towel rails and of course... thick, white, fluffy Egyptian cotton towels.

In the large and open plan kitchen diner 1950's fabulousness can be found in the retro-styled appliances and vintage artefacts. Complementing those is a clean and fresh modern fitted kitchen, which contains everything you will need during your stay (electric oven/hob, dishwasher, microwave, fridge freezer, washing machine/tumble dryer, kettle, toaster and also a DAB radio with Bluetooth connection). The midcentury feel has been brought through to the dining area, which has room to seat four people very comfortably.

The cosy double-aspect lounge has a real wood burner and sumptuous, warm decor. It has a 32" widescreen TV, Freeview and BluRay DVD player and also free Wi-Fi available. On warm summer days the French Doors can be opened out onto a pretty patio which overlooks the lawns of the main house. The retro look is carried through to this room with period-style furniture and original midcentury wall lights.

We love families! We can provide everything you need, including a cot, highchair, baby monitor, steriliser, change mat, potty, toilet seat, step stool, bathmat, car booster seat and bed guards. There's a full range of plastic plates, bowls, cups and cutlery, as well as a training cup and bib for the little ones. Of course we also have a collection of childrens books, games, toys and DVDs.

Included in your stay is a really *welcome* Welcome Pack - milk, butter, home-baked bread, free range eggs from our own chickens, home-made jam/chutney, seasonal fruit from the garden (when available), home-baked pie/cake and a bottle of wine.

The Nest at Winnall is the the perfect tranquil oasis from which to explore the beautiful surroundings of Worcestershire, Shropshire and the Cotswolds with ease. Visit our website nestatwinnall.

The Very Important Small Print: The Nest is a completely non-smoking environment (including the outdoor areas). Unfortunately we can't allow pets at The Nest. Changeover day is usually a Friday, but we can be flexible. We ask that guests arrive after 4pm and depart by 10am.

About Karen Bastock

We are the owners of 'The Nest at Winnall' and we moved here to the beautiful Severn Valley three years ago. We are lovers of lots of space and fresh air, and so decided to make a lifestyle change to a slower pace of life. Our move was also fuelled by the desire to let our two boys roam free and have more of an adventurous childhood amongst fields, woodland and nature. If you have children we are sure that ours will be keen to make friends and show them around. A new life in the country brought with it the inevitable introduction of animals into the family. Currently we have four chickens (Margo, Belle, Grace & Pearl) and two cats (Bonnie & Clyde). No doubt this list will continue to grow! All our animals are very friendly, and our chickens produce the most amazing bright yellow free-range eggs.

David loves chopping wood, cooking and baking, tackling the garden, mountain biking and a nice dark ale. Karen loves making chutney and bread, growing vegetables, chicken-tending, upcycling, testing David's baking and a fine pinot grigio. As a family we are often walking, biking, having friends over, watching films, reading books and enjoying meals out - when we're not dashing around between swimming clubs, scouts & cubs, basketball and drum lessons... So much for a more relaxed pace of life!

Why Karen Bastock chose Droitwich

The cottage, which is joined to the main house, was in a very poor state of repair when we bought the house and land. It has always been a dream of Karen's to own and run a unique holiday retreat. So we put all our efforts into restoring the cottage and re-naming it 'The Nest' - to reflect this welcoming, luxurious and secluded place, with all its home comforts. Our aim is to look after you, our visitors, so that you can come and relax, enjoy, and have the best possible time during your precious time together.

We can't wait to meet you and your family, and welcome you here soon.

A perfect cottage

  • 5 of 5

Everything was just excellent from the welcome to the standard of facilities at the cottage. In over 20 years of staying at cottages in the UK this one was the best, a real 5 star quality.

There are lots of places to visit, things to see and activities to do here in Worcestershire and beyond. Whether you love to ramble, visit places of interest, immerse yourself in history or just shop 'till you drop, there's something for everyone just a short drive away from The Nest. Outdoor pursuits such as walking, cycling, horseriding and fishing are all available on the doorstep.

In the beautiful Wyre Forest (20 mins) you will find waymarked walking trails, family walks, cycling trails, horseriding, activities and events and outdoor play areas. It is also home to the 'Go Ape' Treetop Adventure. Shrawley Wood (20 mins) is a hidden treasure and has a spectacular display of bluebells in April/May. Arley Arboretum (30 mins) is an idyllic escape into 30 acres of nature and history, from gardens with fountains to the Dinosaur and Fairy Trails and even a Maze. Further afield, the Malvern Hills (50 mins), with their links to the composer Sir Edward Elgar, have been described as a mountain range in miniature.

The County Museum at Hartlebury Castle (5 mins drive) has displays covering social history, toys through time and travel & transport. The Severn Valley Railway (20 mins) runs regular steam passenger trains across the Worcestershire and Shropshire borders. Harvington Hall (20 mins) is a moated medieval Elizabethan manor house, containing the finest series of priests hiding places anywhere in the country. The spectacular ruins of Witley Court (20 mins) evoke a bygone era of decadent house parties, balls and concerts. Hanbury Hall & Gardens (25 mins) is a beautiful country house built in 1701, set in 20 acres of recreated early 18th-century gardens and 400 acres of park. Avoncroft Museum (25 mins) is home to over 30 different buildings and structures which have been rescued and re-built in rural Worcestershire. Further afield, Eastnor Castle (50 mins) lies at the foot of the Malvern Hills on the edge of the Cotswolds, and is surrounded by a beautiful deer park, arboretum and lake.

Little Owl Farm Park is only 5 minutes away from The Nest. Set in 18 acres of farmland near Ombersley in Worcestershire, it is a perfect way to enjoy a great fun day out for all the family. The park has lots of animals just waiting to say hello including Sheep, Pigs, Ponies, Pygmy Goats, Meerkats, Deer, Chickens & many more.

Only 20 minutes away, you can find the cathedral city of Worcester with its vibrant mix of the old (Cathedral, Tudor houses and museums) and new (Shopping centres, cinemas and markets). All the high street shops are here, as well as more niche names. There are also many independent stores as well as a multitude of pubs and cafés. The River Severn runs through the city, where you can take a leisurely stroll or even a boat tour. The Art Gallery and Museum is housed in an elegant Victorian building and hosts a programme of special exhibitions, events and activities throughout the year. Other historical places of interest include the impressive Worcester Cathedral, Museum of Royal Worcester, The Commandery and the Elgar Birthplace Museum. Sixways Stadium hosts an array of professional sporting events and Gheluvelt Park has a great splash pad for children. A range of theatrical and musical treats can be seen at both the Swan Theatre and Huntingdon Hall, and the city has two cinemas to choose from.

Within easy reach of The Nest there are many historic market and riverside towns in Worcestershire, such as Bewdley, Stourport-on-Severn, Droitwich Spa, Tenbury Wells, Pershore and Evesham. The county is also full of many beautiful villages such as Ombersley, Upton-upon-Severn, Broadway and Inkberrow (inspiration for Radio 4's 'The Archers'). Just over the Worcestershire border and all under an hour away you can find pictureque places such as Cleobury Mortimer and Bridgnorth (Shropshire), Leominster and Ledbury (Herefordshire) and Tewkesbury (Gloucestershire).

There are no less than four restaurants, three of these also country pubs, in the picturesque black and white village of Ombersley (10 mins), the closest village to The Nest. In Ombersley you will also find the award-winning Bakery, as well as Checketts - a high quality delicatessen, coffee shop, butchers and fishmongers.

We are fortunate that Orchids Spa is situated just five minutes down the lane from The Nest. Here Sarah and her team will ensure you can relax and unwind in the Hot Tub and Himalayan Rock Salt relaxation room. You can also experience a range of beauty and massage treatments, leaving you with a sense of calm and well being. We can personally vouch for their 5-star service! Orchids Spa generously offer guests of The Nest 15% off all treatments.
