Six hours easy driving (mostlly quiet motorways- much of which is toll-free) from a short crossing channel port or 4 hours from a longer crossing port, Rose Cottage is on the edge of a sleepy little hamlet, 3km from Civray with its twice weekly market, supermarkets, restaurants and a new indoor/outdoor swimming pool complex. A life-guarded lake with a waterslide (and bar/restaurant) is just 5 mins away and there are plenty of riverside locations for swimming and canooeing.
The quiet lanes and bridle paths around the cottage are perfect for family cycling as there is so little traffic; They're good for dog walking too so we probably will accept a dog if asked in advance - I may even look after the dog occasionally if you want to go somewhere that dogs aren't allowed.
Chateaux and medieval towns and villages abound for history lovers - Louis XIII is known to have had a picnic lunch in our woods. This is documented in the annals of the little village chateau who provided the serving staff for the picnic. Parts of our house date from the Médiéval period and we have a huge outdoor bread oven.
The local area, including part of our garden, was the site of a river and there are fossils to be found all over - I provide goggles and fossil hammers if children are interested.
Futuroscope is a virtual reality theme park, situated about 40 mins north of the cottage and is a favourite with older children whilst La Vallée des Singes (Monkey Valley) is a firm favourite with all ages and is about 10 mins away.

The large gardens are walled and gated to keep little ones safe and there's plenty of trees to climb for the more adventurous children - the garden backs onto our wood and we have a fair bit of wildlife venturing into the garden, particularly deer, in dry spells when they are looking for a drink.
I have pet hens which don't mind being cuddled and children like to open the chicken house in a morning and look for eggs for breakfast
