About the property

Characteristic Country House With Spectacular Mountain Views

‘Il Refugio’ is a charming, traditional, stone house, typical of this part of Abruzzo. The decor is tasteful and comfortable complimenting the rustic Italian characteristics, such as the vaulted ceiling in the kitchen and beamed ceiling in the lounge. The property is set in beautiful countryside with lovely views all around, including amazing views of the mountains, but is only a 10 minute drive from the beautiful, ancient walled town of Penne. The house and grounds are accessed directly from tarmac roads.

The house sleeps 4/5 – in two good sized double bedrooms. The fully equipped kitchen, with gas hob, electric oven, log burning stove, table and chairs, has everything necessary for preparing exciting dishes from locally sourced fresh food. The vaulted ceilings add an extremely characteristic touch. There is a walk-in pantry, meaning that if you decide to ‘do a big shop’ at the start of your holiday, storage certainly won’t be a problem. The relaxing lounge has a log burning stove, flat wall mounted television, CD /DVD Player and 2 comfortable settees. There is an wide choice of books and DVDs. The family bathroom has a full size bath and shower. The walls are two feet thick making the house cool in summer and warm in the cooler months. The ground floor utility/wash room, containing toilet, bidet, sink and washing machine, is a useful place to keep your walking shoes and beach items. Another room has a large fridge/freezer. The house is centrally heated. Wi-fi internet available.

The ‘pièce de résistance’ is surely the garden, with its spectacular views of the Gran Sasso mountains. There is an expansive paved area around the house, which is flat and spacious. The large, permanent gazebo and covered patio areas give shade, whilst there are plenty of sunny areas too – perfect for sun worshippers and shade seekers alike! The garden was designed with entertainment, fun and relaxation in mind, and it has certainly succeeded. The covered areas mean that it is ideal for all-weather outdoor eating. Plus, the abundant amount of outside lights around the patio area and the confines of the garden, give so much light that meals can enjoyed outside at any time of day or night. There is a large table, many outside chairs and a barbecue. The garden, including some of the meadowland, is fully fenced, with a gated entrance, providing security and ample parking, as well as a safe area for pets to roam.

From the ornamental garden around the house, you can follow steps down to the 7.5 acre grounds, which include meadow areas and woodland. First, you will encounter a swing, plus a picnic bench on a flat grassy area below the garden. The land reaches all the way to the river, through private woods, which create a haven for a host of birds and wildlife. Within the extensive grounds of ‘Il Refugio’, you can enjoy a piece of the beautiful countryside of Abruzzo, without having to leave ‘home!’

Perfect for a quiet, peaceful holiday set between the coast (30mins) and the mountains (45mins). There are wide, sandy beaches at Montesilvano, Silvi Marina and Pineto for swimming / sunbathing and a large network of signposted walks in the mountains for walkers. For those looking for a relaxing break away from the stresses of modern life, ‘Il Refugio’ is the ideal place to stay.

Penne nestles in a beautiful landscape, set in the hills between the Apennine Mountains and the Adriatic sea and serves a commune of some 10,000 people. Voted one of Italy's most beautiful towns, Penne is called the ‘city of art’ with museums, churches and a magnificent cathedral. With all the amenities of large town, including shops, bars, cafes, restaurants and a lively Saturday market, Penne provides an excellent glimpse of the real Italy. With many Festas (festivals) held throughout the year, especially during the summer months, you will find typical foods, wine and music of Abruzzo, providing an ideal way of getting into the local spirit and soaking up the atmosphere of local life.

Penne is an ancient walled town, having been a seat of government of the Vestini people starting around 300 BC. In the Middle Ages, Penne was under the control of the Lombards as part of the Duchy of Spoleto. Around 1130,Penne became part of the Kingdom of Sicily. This rich history is reflected in the many architectural treasures and maze of atmospheric streets in the old town.

The nearby ‘Riserva Naturale Lago di Penne’, a large man-made lake and nature reserve, established in 1987, includes a Botanical Garden and is host to over 160 species of birds. The Riserva is well equipped with a Visitor Centre, an Otter Centre and a Butterfly Garden, as well as wildlife areas with picnic benches and hiking trails.

Abruzzo is one of Italy’s best kept secrets, long popular with Italians for its long, sun bathed coastline in summer and its extensive network of ski slopes in winter. Protected from the hordes of tourists that overcrowd Tuscany and Umbria, Abruzzo remains virtually untouched and is often referred to as the ‘Garden of Europe’. It has spectacular natural scenery, medieval castles and villages, monasteries and Roman ruins.

Much of the Abruzzo region is in National or Regional Park which host a vast array of wildlife, flowers and animals. Indeed bears, wolves and all manner of birds of prey inhabit the more remote corners of the countryside! Thanks to its Parks, Abruzzo’s nature has been safeguarded to be enjoyed and visited by all. The commitment to environmental conservation, together this great area of protected territory, has earned Abruzzo the deserved title of ‘greenest region in Europe’.

With 135km of seaside with blue flag beaches, the Adriatic coast, with its pines and palm-lined promenades is only 30 mins from’ Il Refugio’. The golden sands are clean and safe for children; the resorts are modern with a good selection of cafes and restaurants. To the north of Pescara, miles of sandy beach stretch uninterrupted, marked by a series of family oriented resorts with all the necessary facilities to keep everyone happy. To the south, the resorts and sandy beaches give way to a more beautiful but less developed stretch of coastline marked by small fishing villages and picturesque bays.

During the spring, as the snow melts the spectacular mountain scenery becomes a perfect place to explore. There are numerous way marked walking paths from gentle strolls between villages to more ambitious hikes into the highest and wildest stretches of the Gran Sasso. Car drivers will be delighted by the miles of empty roads which wind up into and through the mountains, with stunning views around every bend.

Abruzzo is conveniently close to many of central Italy’s well known urban centres; Rome and Naples being within easy reach by car or public transport. The region is rapidly establishing itself as an excellent base for lovers of Italy and all things Italian, who have perhaps, exhausted the over exposed charms of Tuscany and Umbria.
