About Philip Nix

This house has been in our family for over forty years. While regularly upgraded it retains the charm of an early 20th century home. As a young couple we first moved to this area in 1972. with our one year old son. Shortly after my wife's mother moved in down the street into this address. After years in Sonoma County after retirement we returned to be close to family and the interests and variety of urban life in a beautiful city. Pasadena has a long and fascinating history with all the glitter of now and the charm of a gracious past.

Highly recommended!

My daughter and I spent several days in Pasadena for a family event and so enjoyed our stay. Comfortable, cozy property with great hosts. We arrived in the afternoon to a bottle of wine and snacks with breakfast food items available for the next morning.

It was perfect for the two of us.

Lovely, walkable, convenient neighborhood. We are very pleased we chose this property!

Peaceful, cozy little home base in Pasadena

  • 5 of 5

What luck to have found this place! My husband and I were returning to the Pasadena area, where we used to live, for a week of work and play and were looking for a place close to Caltech that had more charm and seclusion than a hotel but was still affordable and convenient. Philip's sweet little carriage house definitely exceeded our expectations! He was a warm and generous host, ever helpful and thoughtful, and that personal touch extended to a variety of very welcome details throughout the apartment, like a bottle of wine, breakfast options in the fridge, fresh fruit, plenty of coffee, lots of spare linens (love those huge fluffy towels and extra pillows), good wifi with easy access instructions, even a hairdryer and curling iron and other bonus amenities tucked away in case you need them. The place itself has a bit of that wonderful old-book smell, and indeed there are plenty of those! Its decor is a lovely blend of timeless and modern--very white and spare and clean, but also traditional and functional and cozy. The bed is surprisingly comfortable, there's plenty of space in the bedroom to spread out from your suitcase, the counter space is excellent in the bathroom and the light in there is tremendous, the small kitchen is quite well equipped, and the backyard setting is private and safe (and it smells beautifully floral every time you leave the house). The location was ideal, in a gorgeous leafy neighborhood just a ten-minute walk from the shops on Lake and maybe 15 to Caltech at most, or a five-minute drive to Pasadena's Old Town attractions and the freeways. The only thing I'd note is that the place is best for those who are on the small side (which we are, so the size was perfect). So: stay here, chat with Philip (he's led a very interesting life), smell the flowers, and get some sun. We hope to return!

Winter Stay in Pasadena!

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed in enough places to know upon arrival that Philip was going to be an exceptional host. He is so hospitable and eager to make your stay comfortable and seamless. He offers the perfect balance of privacy, accessibility, and friendliness.

Our apartment was clean, very well equipped, bright, airy and quiet. Cable TV and WiFi were excellent!

We have visited Pasadena countless times over the last decade, and find that it is this area that is particularly convenient to most everything. Great public transportation is a short walk. We had a car, but opted to use the Metro to go downtown LA and found it quite enjoyable. Museums, restaurants, shopping and Old Town Pasadena are close to the apartment. We walk to Trader Joe's!

This is a beautiful tree-lined neighborhood that begs you to take a walk as the evening cools. You feel safe and relaxed.

We leave feeling that we have made a friend in Philip. My husband and I plan to return!

Hidden Gem With Heart

  • 5 of 5

Adorable, sweet & well appointed - - this cozy cottage greeted us with charm at every turn!

Located in a beautiful, slice of life neighborhood we describe to family & friends as "like in the movies". It's the kind of place you dream of as a kid -- neighbors smile & wave when picking up their morning newspaper, greet you by name & say "Good Morning!" (and genuinely mean it).

Gorgeous, clean, tree-lined streets with mountain views & wide sidewalks make for lovely morning or sunset strolls. We truly enjoyed all the stunning Craftsman, Storybook & other unique homes in this area.

Ideal location! Very close to freeways, Metro & short walk or bike ride to AMAZING restaurants, coffee shops, theaters, Playhouse District & neat stores in Old Town Pasadena & Lake Street. Von's, Pavilions, Trader Joe's & Whole Foods (beautiful store) all less then 5 min. away for easy grocery stops.

We are both self-employed & this home works well to work from. Nice size downstairs office/living room, upstairs breakfast bar which doubles as a stand-up desk & corner chair to read a book & enjoy coffee. This home brought out the kid in me! A fun place w/ a tree house feel that overlooks fragrant orange trees. The bedroom is much larger than it appears in the photos & reminds me of my favorite Grandmother's home in the best possible way. The modern meets old-charm decor is inviting & feels like a warm hug. The bed is very comfortable!

The kitchen has all you need to whip up a great meal & there are many beautiful windows which make it feel light, airy & larger than the photos show. The bathroom is bright & quaint. I like a long soak, so I wish it had a tub, but the small shower had good water pressure & always had hot water.

A house is a simply a structure until it's filled with love, only then does it becomes a home. This special space & family is most certainly filled with love. You can FEEL it. That is what made it feel like home, sweet, home-away from home for us.

The owners Philip & Susan are gracious, caring, helpful & knowledgeable. Whether it was sharing a helpful yoga class, car wash, pointing out a neighborhood to search for our forever home or telling us an interesting story at the end of the day, they provided the perfect amount of privacy, yet still made us feel welcome & very much at home. EXCELLENT hosts!

Philip & Susan are not only the kind of owners you feel blessed to know . . . they are so kind that you will always want to know them.
