Overview

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 3)

This superb terraced mews cottage is located in the very heart of Broadway, overlooking a vibrant village courtyard. The village itself is has a very pretty high street, once an ancient ‘ridge way’ between Worcester and London; it’s made up of a mixture of honey-coloured cottages and period houses. Broadway was named after this ’broad way’, which is still a wide street, and there is a fine selection of independent shops, including designer boutiques and jewellery outlets, antique shops and gift shops. Visitors will also find a wide range of restaurants and pubs to choose from in the village and surrounding area. The village has a fascinating history and it was an important stopping place for the stage coaches that travelled between Worcester and London in the 1600s. The historic village inn was on the route, and is well known as a meeting place used by King Charles I during the civil war, and Oliver Cromwell is also reputed to have stayed here. Many famous artists have been attracted to this lovely Cotswold village, including the composers Edward Elgar and Vaughan Williams, artists John Singer Sargent and Edwin Austin Abbey, and writers, including J M Barrie. The village also has links with the Arts and Crafts movement and William Morris visited regularly. Arts and Crafts furniture designer Gordon Russell worked in Broadway and a museum commemorating his life and work is based in his original workshop. The village is home to a number of art galleries, so there are often interesting exhibitions for visitors to see. Broadway’s location makes it a good base for your cottage in the Cotswolds and for exploring the numerous nearby pretty Cotswold villages. The towns of Stratford-upon-Avon, Bath, Cheltenham, Warwick and Oxford are also all within easy reach. Shop, pub and restaurant ¼ mile.
