About Malcolm Buteux
Hello and thank you for showing an interest. I am English , much of my life spent in a Dartmoor village in Devon. I have lived in Perfugas for most summers for many years. I have enjoyed hunting the hidden gems of this region and share my discoveries with family and friends. Running a holiday villa is a natural progression from that. Please feel free to contact us for any further information you would like to have about the property or the area. Kind Regards, Malcolm
Malcolm Buteux purchased this Villa in 2011
Why Malcolm Buteux chose Perfugas
I first fell in love with the Anglona and Gallura regions when I was house hunting more than 13 years ago. This stunning countryside, surrounded by red tinted mountains is what attracted me first. The proximity to the beach and the warmth of the local people won us over.
What makes this Villa unique
What makes this villa truly unique is that it is set in a natural, rural environment that is so tranquil that it is rare to even hear a car. And yet you are only 25 kms from the seaside. You also have your very own bronze age monument on-site in the form of a 3500 years old Nuraghe ruin(Tower built by the Nuragic civilisation. They are also the people who built the sacred well you can see in the centre of Perfugas). Our pool is rather unique in having a salt electrolysis system that leaves your skin, hair soft and your eyes clear.

Relaxed accommodation with lots of character in a rural setting but within easy reach of beaches.
A lovely house in a rural part of Sardinia away from the crowds along the coast but close enough to spectacular beaches and most of the main sights in the North of the country. The smaller house of the two is well suited for a family with young children. It is one of a very few houses that we found in Sardinia with a safer pool for young children. It has wonderful views and many places to relax and enjoy them whatever the time of day or heat. The house has all one needs for a relaxed holiday. Though do bring some mosquito spray!
The welcome and starter pack is the best we have ever experienced and Malcolm has a wealth of local knowledge whatever the topic.
Peace and quiet
We rented both properties for a week’s stay with some friends. The setup was ideal. The property is secluded which we preferred though it does mean a drive to find provisions. Malcolm was an excellent host. He gave us lots of suggestions of things to do/avoid and kept in touch throughout the week if he became aware of a fete or suchlike. We visited a couple of beaches- St Petro a Mare and La Ciachia. Both had plentiful and cheap parking (60 cents an hour) and the kids really enjoyed the warm sea. We also followed Malcolm’s instructions to the Rondine waterfall and pools. A bit of adventure clambering down rocks but worth it. We didn’t find too many places to eat but to be honest we were happy self-catering so not a problem. All in all a great week away.
Ideal place for an exended family holiday
We stayed at Malcolm’s property for a week and used both the main Villa and the Stazzu. Our party comprised of 5 adults and 2 children (aged 1 and 4). The property was perfect for us and having the 2nd property was great. It meant that my parents and my brother were able to avoid the 6.30am wake up alarm of my children and also gave them somewhere to go for a bit of peace and quiet during the day if needed! An added bonus was each bedroom having an en-suite meaning there was no queuing for the toilet or a shower.
The property is very well equipped, even with outdoor items to take to the beach or use in the garden. The children loved exploring the grounds and we found it very good for hide and seek! They also enjoyed gecko spotting, which on the warm sunny days can be seen on nearly every rock. The space in the property and also the land it is on is amazing and even with a group of us it never felt crowded. The pool is refreshing! However, we were there at the end of May so it hadn’t had much time to warm up – it was still a great size for a dip and for the children to swim in. There was even a swim ring for my youngest to use. The added bonus of it being above ground so we didn’t have any concerns about our one year old wandering to close to the edge whilst on one of her many gecko hunts!
The views are breath-taking and the peace and quiet you get from being there is perfect. As there are no street lights nearby the views of the stars are superb, not to mention the nightingale singing and the cuckoo during the day. This may all sound very idyllic but it really is a wonderful place to stay.
Malcolm as a host is great from the moment we booked with the information provided to his knowledge of the area is fantastic, and he was always more than happy to answer messages asking for information about places to visit. He visited a couple of times to clean the pool and stayed for a tea and chat where we learnt about the history of the property and also the area itself.
Recommendations I would make.
• The Ice Cream shop in Perfugas is a must – you can also buy tubs that they will fill for you to take back to the Villa and keep in the freezer for your stay.
• Hiring a car is essential
• There is a Lidl just outside of the Airport, I would recommend stocking up there before heading to the Villa as the prices are more reasonable and there is more selection. However, for additional shopping during your stay the Eurospin in Perfugas is good.
Perfect rustic charm
What a perfect week we had at Villa Nuraghe. Don't expect comfortable luxury but what you do get is rustic charm, peaceful isolation and excellent facilities with everything you need in the home. Malcolm has tastefully and lovingly restored the 2 villas and equipped them to a high standard. Having 2 individual buildings, both with 2 ensuite rooms, set metres apart at right angles to each other offers the perfect holiday home for a multi generational family like ours, or for 2 families. We spent leisurely mornings on the terrace, around the pool and enjoying the badminton net and the grounds before heading out to various locations in the afternoons. We never drove for more than 40 minutes but found quaint harbours, long sandy beaches, more intimate coves and castles to explore. Even in the height of the season (July) the roads were quiet and villages seemed deserted, beaches varied from busy to almost empty. The shops in Perfugas are more than adequate and the wine coop recommended by Malcolm was excellent. The bottles waiting for us on our arrival gave us the opportunity to taste before we bought.
Malcolm really was the perfect host. He gave us a comprehensive tour when we arrived and cleaned the pool mid week. Apart from this he wouldn't have troubled us, but we needed a Dr! He not only came round to give us contact details but also brought medication to try to help. Seeing the Dr was every bit as easy as he'd predicted (but do make sure you bring EHIC cards). We invited Malcolm to join us for a drink and spent a happy couple of hours chatting and finding out more about the area.
There were only 2 things we felt might have improved the villa: cushions for the sun loungers and a better wifi connection. Malcolm tells us he is already looking into providing the cushions which will make a difference. The wifi is acceptable but weak but it meant we chatted to each other instead of the youngsters constantly being online, a hidden bonus. I believe stronger Internet is available in local bars. Despite this I still rate Nuraghe as a perfect place to spend a happy holiday and we only wish we'd been there longer. Thank you, Malcolm.
It was a pleasure to have you on holiday at my villas and to meet such a friendly and happy family.
Thank you for your very comprehensive and generous review.
Thank you, also, for your suggestions which are valuable to me to make sure I offer the best holiday experience possible.
For future guests i would like to comment on the Wifi provision at the villas in response to this review.
The only Wifi available in the villas area is a very expensive satellite internet to which the villas are linked by a Wifi bridge. Providing constant and unlimited internetfor my guests.
It is as you say adequate, connection to most sites is fast and it is possible on video chat on whatsapp and Skype. Previous guests have used this connection for example, to plan cycle tours and even finalise wedding arrangements for a ceremony in Sardinia. It is not fast enough for streaming TV, online gaming or downloading large files quickly, such as films.
As you rightly say, faster internet is available, free at bars a few kilometers away in the village.
I would mention also, if you choose to holiday in a rural paradise, which is sparsely populated and therefore has few internet customers and also, is perhaps the poorest region in Italy, you can not really expect the same internet speeds or development of most services that we enjoy in more populated areas of Europe.
However, there is a steady improvement and faster internet may soon be available.
Personally, i would (and do!) value the (increasingly rare) natural beauty and peace of this island above the speed of its internet provision.
The villa Nuraghe is a haven of peace! It is a perfect place to have a rest, enjoy nature with the family. The climate is ideal: heat that is not overwhelming because of the air coming from the sea.
The villa is ideally located: in a quiet place and close to beaches. We spent pleasant moments with the charming owner Malcolm who has gave us excellent advice about things to do and see.
Many thanks to him! An unforgettable stay!

- At an 1H15 drive from Olbia ( Easyjet) and Alghero (Ryanair), this villa is ideally located for exploring all the fantastic beaches of the northern coast as well as the many towns and inland places of interest .
- 20 mins drive from some of the most beautiful beaches in the mediteranean sea. Sardinia is famed for its amazing beaches and this is rightly deserved as they vary from little secret coves to long stretches of amazing white beaches. The water is crystal clear and ideal for snorkelling.
- However this region's best kept secret (and seldom visited by tourists) is the surrounding countryside and mountains providing beautiful walks/natural swimming pools /rock climbing etc.
- Archaeological sites and museum in Perfugas itself . Many more sites of cultural interest in surrounding villages.
- Folkloristic events and fiestas all year round in the Anglona region (traditional singing and dancing, craft fair etc.)
- Guided canoe trips, wind/kite surfing lessons, diving tuition within 30 minutes drive of the villa.
- Wildlife lovers will be enchanted : so many animals can be seen. Mostly various birds, lizards, hedgehogs, turtles etc. Foxes and wild boars are mostly seen at night.
- Supermarkets, local wine and cheese co-operatives selling local produce with restaurants, cafes and shops close by.
- Free internet at the local cafe/bar as well as ATM, pharmacy and GP.
Whatever your holiday style and with our client information pack, you will be spoilt for choice of places to go and things to do .
