First class all around

  • 5 of 5

Denise and team have created a wonderful gem in Castiglione di Sicilia. We were on our 25th anniversary trip and stayed here for our first 3 nights in Sicilia to get-away a bit. We had the master suite which included a spacious room and spa-like bathroom area with shower and wonderful bathtub, along with beautiful views and terraces looking out upon Etna and the castle next to her home. Wi-Fi worked very well and there were plenty of outlets for those needing both. Breakfast was served each day in her dining area downstairs. You can tell Denise enjoys hosting and serving her guests, and she and her 'team' do it with style, without being intrusive, but with a warmth which makes you want to have them sit with you as you eat. The home is first class all the way, and if you're a lover of art, home decoration, restoration, history, you will be very pleased. Denise put us in touch with a tour at Planeta (vineyard) and with an excellent guide (Paolo) to take us to Etna. These made exploring the area much easier. I do wish we could have stayed longer just to explore more wineries as Castiglione is particularly well situated for that. A day trip to Taormina was also a highlight for us. Grazie per tutto.

The best of Italy!

  • 5 of 5

We’ve been to Italy four times, but never to Sicilia. We know Italy’s culture, main cities, many towns, country homes and agriturismos. We also knew that Sicilia’s eastern seaboard would be touristy and congested, and thus desired a quiet nearby base from where to explore Mount Etna, Taormina and Catania. We also wished for a medieval looking town and high class, modern lodging. This was a long wish list! We selected La Dimora del Castelluccio in Castioglione di Sicilia.

Castiglione is a quaint town of narrow winding roads and alleys and fifteen churches perched on a hill north of Mount Etna. It’s a 40 minutes drive to Taormina, Catania or to the Sapienza Station on Mount Etna (where a cable car takes you up the volcano). The drive is not far; on the contrary, we avoided traffic, the countryside is lush green and towns delightful. Castiglione’s elevation is 640 meters (2100 feet) above sea level. At about 15 kilometers inland, it enjoys pleasant temperatures, clean air and no noise nor traffic.

The Vacation Rentals by Owner (VRBO) reference and the pictures on their site are accurate. We rented three nights early June, 2017. A Michelin paper map of Sicily and well marked roads took us to the property doorstep at the top of town. We parked at the front door.

Owner Denise du Chene de Vere and staff of two welcomed us with a wonderful smile and Italian enthusiasm of long lost family. She took us directly to a beautiful terrace for tea, coffee, pastries and quiche made by her for our arrival. This was to be a new and special Italian experience!

Denise is an elegant, well educated, traveled, sophisticated Italian lady from Rome. She once visited Castiglione and vowed to live there. She built this new modern house on the top of the hill, overlooking a church dome, all Castiglione, the countryside and smoking Mount Etna.

We were given the master bedroom at the top floor, a superb suite like apartment with king size bed, private modern bathroom, dressing room, surrounding terrace, all sparkling clean. There’s free high speed internet. In the evenings, we walked the town and had dinner at a couple of local restaurants. The feeling of old rural Italy was all there. We hardly saw tourists. Full breakfast was served by our lady butler on fine china at the terrace and dining room, featuring regional dishes, some prepared especially for us by Denise.

Truly the best of Italy!
