Wide open, fun house with deli size kitchen and room for football games. We have an old grand piano you cant hurt and it's always in tune; assorted instruments and show time props for impromptu talent nights. The classical porch overlooking the river is 45 ft long with swings and rockers. There are three decks, hammocks, deep water pier, sailboats, canoes, kayaks, fishing gear, crabbing gear, fish/crab outdoor cooking equipment, 3 gas grills, 2 wood fired grills, bicycles and about 800 books you ought to read but don't have to (just say you did.) No rules, no functional clocks; its always 5:00 PM at the river place.
Chuck Beck and Smokey are co-owners of this riverfront vacation spot on Old Man Creek. (No, it wasn't named for us but yes, we're both 70). Chuck and Ivelisse (photo shy) worked many years in Latin America and later in Florida and Michigan. We live on Capitol Hill in Washington now and can help you with tips on sight seeing and learning about DC. . We make every effort to see that you are comfortable in our river vacation house and have a great time together.
The neighbors along Old Man Creek and the Magothy River and wonderful friendly foldk and you'll know many of them by the end of a week. Wave as they parade by in yachts, fishing and work boats, kayaks, canoes and swimming. You'll also get to know the ospreys and eagles that nest in the trees along the river, the geese, ducks and waterfowl of every sort and you just may consume your weight in our famous Maryland blue crabs. We provide traps, fishing gear, kayaks, canoes, sailboats, life jackets, oars, all you need. There are three big gas grills and two wood fired grills and lots of wood. We provide a 10 gallon crab steamer with a big propane gas burner and industrial quantities of Old Bay seasoning.
My family of five, 2 adults and three young-adult children spent a week in this house on the Chesapeake Bay in August 2016. The house has a huge living are and large kitchen with massive decks that overlook the river. We were struck by how much living space there is compared to the number of bedrooms. On the other hand, there was lots of space to spread out.
We loved the fact that so this house contained so many cool things to do without driving anywhere. There were enough kayaks for our family of five to go out on kayaks together. The double kayak had a broken seat which we managed to fix enough to use. There is also a sail boat that holds 6, but it has no motor, which made getting out of our little outlet a bit difficult. The neighborhood is an easy place to take a short run without going on any busy roads, and is close to an awesome bike trail. We rode bike into Annapolis one day and rode in the other direction another day. Waterways are everywhere and are lovely. We ate delicious fresh crab from Joes which is only about a mile away on the back porch as the sun set. Awesome. On extremely hot days, it was difficult to take full advantage of the river front porches.
The house was in good repair and what we had what we needed to cook great meals. The large work spaces in the kitchen made me want to trade my kitchen for this one. Chuck was super friendly and happy to answer any questions we had both at the beginning of our stay and during the week.
Our family of four (with two teenage girls) traveled in from abroad to vacate and reunite with various local friends and family. We let our loved ones come and go while we stayed put in this pretty home with giant living spaces. The house has a wonderful loved and lived in feeling; living areas and well equipped kitchen lent themselves very well to entertaining and eating in large groups. The long, well furnished porch over the creek, with its ample seating and two industrial sized fans (we suffered a heat wave), provided a fantastic vantage point for bird watching, relaxing, eating, viewing thunderstorms,... We loved the porch swing! Sleeping: the two king beds were very comfortable, especially the master suite downstairs. The upstairs third bedroom as well as the office sofa bed were older and creaky = time for an update; OK for kids but not adults. Sheets and linens were high quality and overabundant. Chuck and Ivelisse - vielen Dank for the Swiss flag at the front door - nice touch! Thanks also to Chuck for uncomplicated, fair and prompt business dealings. We would love to come again and would recommend the home for the way we used it. We would, however, ask that the sailboats be refurbished prior to renting again. (Since we were preoccupied with busy visitor schedules as well as a few planned day trips, we didn't ask Chuck to remedy the missing halyard line and sheets, dismounted and missing outboard motor, broken life lines, etc. We felt that all that would have taken too long and been too cumbersome to rectify during the short time of our stay.) We can highly recommend renting SUPboards from EMS in Annapolis. The Anne Arundel Seafood Market was very close and a great takeout option for our larger crews. Point Crabhouse was a favorite for crabcakes. Breakfast Shoppe was fab. Chick and Ruth's in Annapolis, as always, a must. Proximity to Baltimore, Annapolis and D.C., BWI, as well as the eastern townships is great at this location. We hope to return again sometime!
Chuck's home was the perfect place for our 9-strong family to vacation this summer. The house's first floor is open and offers plenty of comfortable places to sit. The little library is quaint and served as the perfect small office for those of us who had to work. The kitchen was large and well equipped. Everything was clean and tidy when we arrived and there was more than enough clean linens and towels. The porch was beautiful. We used the grills more than once and went kayaking several times. I would happily go back to Chuck's beautiful home on the Magothy.
We just finished our sixth house rental at various points around the Chesapeake Bay. Chuck's home in Severna Park has clearly the best interior accommodations, in terms of spaciousness as well as a remarkable mix of quality furnishings in an easy-living setting. The kitchen is remarkably comfortable. The living room is comfortable and tastefully done. The piano is a treat. And the long covered porch overlooking the Magothy River (well, Old Man's Creek, to be more precise) -- wow -- how many hours did we just sit on the porch swing and watch the herons and osprey?
We spent several afternoons kayaking out into the Magothy River and oogling the houses and boats. The several tiers of patios at the water front is a nice feature, as were the multiple gas grills.
The upper floor (with washer/dryer) is just a bit more basic, but the kids didn't miss a beat. The house was thoroughly cleaned and maintained. Chuck handled all the business arrangements promptly and fairly.
The kitchen and pantry were spotless and kindly stocked with cooking basics (rice, spices, etc).
My only regret was the crab cakes at the Anne Arundel Seafood Market on Mountain Road -- they were 8 ounces as advertised, but backfin rather than jumbo lump (like the wonderful seafood market we found on Mayo Road down in Edgewater). There was no bad intent by the market -- the price reflected the going rate for backfin. It's just that I couldn't find any alternate source nearby. Even so, we all agreed that they were tasty.
Recommend this house to others? You bet! We have a general family rule about never going to the same place twice, but this one may give us cause to make an exception.
Our family enjoyed this well equipped vacation home. We crabbed and fished off the dock as well as kayaked every morning. This home was close for day trips that we took to visit Mt. Vernon, Annapolis and Washington, D.C. The home is conveniently located to shopping, restaurants and activities such as miniature golf and bowling which we did during our stay. The owner recommended restaurants nearby as well as in Washington, D.C. which was very helpful. Great vacation home.
Our family had such a nice vacation. We stayed for 2 weeks and had time for DC, Annapolis, Baltimore, and the beach. This is a great location to take day trips from and then come back home to relax on the back porch. Our kids used the kayaks and caught crabs off the dock. The also caught an eel, a shrimp, and a jelly fish! Chuck could not have been nicer. He dropped off some bikes that the kids rode around the block the entire time we were here. We even watched people setting off fireworks from the dock the week of the 4th. The house is huge with plenty of room to spread out. It is old with tons of character. We would definitely go back.
