About the property

Rustic, this is for the discerning traveller thirsting for authentic living.

The property offers 4 large double bedrooms and 2 bathrooms on the first floor (one of them being an en-suite). There is an additional occasional bedroom and a separate bathroom on the ground floor. Additionally, there is a cot, a high chair, 2 toilet seats and a step for an infant.

There are 2 kitchens in the property including, one in the main house and the other one at the swimming pool. In reality, the property is big enough to welcome many more guests but I prefer to offer my entire house to responsible families for a truly unique experience. Other intending guests must be, preferably, over 25 years old.

The lounge is an open space with a dining area decorated in a traditional country style with Victorian and French antique furniture. Above it, there is a mezzanine with a 2 bar football tables. The dining room composes the other half of this open space and has an antique Victorian table which sits 16 people.

The main white kitchen is simple in design and is fully equipped with an oak table and 4 chairs.

There is a TV room with children's books, mostly in English. The laundry room is adjacent to the TV room. This room leads to a separate wing of the property (accessible through an outside corridor) which contains a play room which comes with some toys; this playroom doubles up as a teenage "den" to offer separate space for the younger guests. I chose to define it as a play room but this space is large enough to sleep 8 people (and this had been tried and tested with success!). This space has been used in the past as a 6th bedroom; it is fully carpeted and is equipped with an ultra modern double bed with LEDs and hanging space for clothes.

The pool is set in the front garden away from the main property. The lights inside the pool create a visually pleasing effect in the evening.

The pool is heated for extra comfort depending on the weather. The open plan pool kitchen has an electrical hob, a sink with a waste disposal unit, a fridge, some well appointed shelves and a table sitting 8 people comfortably. There is an additional small dining table with seats and a corner wood bench sitting 4 people.

There is a front garden just outside the main lounge with a pleasant stone table and seats, ideal for afternoon tea or early evening drinks. There is also a garden around the pool grounds with the pool kitchen, the pool house and a back garden; all 3 being accessible via a long drive.

The area is very secure but for your peace of mind but still, there is an alarm.

Hello! I have travelled extensively but the Landes department is still my favourite destination in the whole wide world. Truly. It is so authentic, unspoiled and relatively unknown. There is no fuss. Why Helene chose Horsarrieu

Le Grand Lamarque is a typical period Maison de Maître which oozes with rustic authenticity and country character. It appeals to families with a passion for French traditions in search of genuine style combined with good facilities such as a heated pool.

The property is situated in a village and while this allows you to benefit from the peace and quiet of such a location, you are also next to all amenities within a few minutes drive. It is safe for children and in turn, this gives parents the opportunity to worry a bit less than in other locations.

You can do as much or as little as you want as the region abounds in activities especially if you enjoy physical challenges.

Day trips to the beach are excellent as you get the best of both worlds: you embrace the atmosphere of the busy sea resorts but come back to the quietness of your spacious home.

It is a pure paradise for children and a delight for teenagers and young adult as they are able to have parties around the pool until reasonable times in the evening and under adult supervision. The nearby Olympic swimming pool can provide hours of fun at extremely low prices while parents play golf across the road.

Fresh croissants and pains au chocolat (called chocolatines in the region!) are available from numerous patisseries in the nearby town in less than 5 minutes by car.

All supermarkets and restaurants are within a similar distance, placing the property in a very convenient location.

Le Grand La marque will appeal to the discerning traveller, in search of authenticity, quality and cultural experiences.

What makes this villa unique

To me, the location of this property makes it one of its best features. It is a place which enables you to take a step back in order to reconnect with family values, nature and "real France" while not feeling isolated. It is my hidden treasure!

Large well located property with great facilities

The property is very spacious and easily room for 8-10 people. The facilities were excellent with a kitchen and covered eating area for outdoor dining next to the large swimming pool. The main property is large and has a kitchen and separate washing room. Outside there is plenty of grassy areas for the children to run and play in a safe closed environment. The property is surrounded by rural land and is very peaceful.

The property was very clean with bed linen and towels provided.

There is help if you need it locally as Gilbert who lives down the road came to clean the pool and provide other services as you might need (he printed off some rugby tickets for me) and is very friendly.

The property is in a great location to explore the local area - from the beaches at Biarritz and St Jean de Luz, the historic towns of Pau and Bayonne and the wine areas of Madiran and Iroudeguy. We also went further afield to San Sebastien and Bordeaux - all within 2 hours drive. It was just over an hour from Biarritz airport so the travelling days weren't too much of a pain.

There are plenty of smaller towns closer by to explore as well.

The owner is also very helpful offering guidance an assistance as required and is very responsive. It is always better to be able to tap in to local knowledge to find hidden treasures such as which are the best local restaurants or the fact there is an olympic size swimming pool down the road.

Overall we had a lovely stay and would highly recommend it.

Lovely, rural, well equipped holiday home

We have recently returned from a lovely 2 week holiday at this property. The house is in a peaceful, very rural location yet close enough to the main road to allow easy access to the Atlantic beaches and the lovely towns of Bayonne, Pau and San Sebastian (all less than 2 hours away). The house itself is well equipped with large spacious very comfy bedrooms. There was a great swimming pool with plenty of sun loungers for adults and inflatables for the children. There was an ample supply of good quality pool towels for our use which we found very useful and not something we have found at other places we have stayed. Next to the pool is an outdoor kitchen area which we used for almost all of our cooking. A handy hotplate and bbq were provided. The pool was kept well cleaned and a local man Guilbert was helpful to attend to many needs and enquiries including booking restaurants for us. Recommendations on what to do and where to eat from Helene were very much appreciated and provided us with some great experiences. A great location to explore wine country too. All in all I would recommend it for families, the house is plenty big enough for a couple of families to holiday together, Thanks Helene for a great holiday.

An amazing house, in a perfect location, with the most thoughtful of owners.

Our extended family has just returned from spending two very enjoyable weeks at this fantastic house in Horsarrieu. The villa is situated in beautiful French countryside, ideally located for day trips to the beaches of Biarritz and Saint-Jean-de-Luz, the Pyrenean mountains and, just across the border, San Sebastian – a paradise for ‘foodies’.

While we ventured out to enjoy some of these attractions, we spent most of our time at the house itself, with many lazy days spent by the excellent pool – and many of our meals prepared and taken in the pool-side kitchen.

The impressive and characterful house is very spacious, with all the facilities a large family would need. The bedrooms in particular were nicely decorated, with each room having its own individual theme.

Above all else, it was the warm welcome and the many thoughtful touches from Hélène, the owner, that made our stay particularly special. Hélène had obviously gone to great effort in making us comfortable, with our children especially delighted with the treats we found upon our arrival. We were also very pleased with the numerous recommendations Hélène made regarding local events, restaurants and places of interest. All of which were helpful in getting the most out of our holiday.

We whole-heartedly recommend a stay here to any family looking for a relaxing retreat, and look forward to returning ourselves in the future.

Relaxing Retreat

We hired a car from Bordeaux Airport and stopped enroute at a supermarket to stock up on local food wine and other supplies for our break.

It was easy to find and when we arrived we were stunned by the magnificence of the property ! It takes your breath away!

Located in a beautiful, quiet and tranquil area, this charming old traditional stone house had clean stylish and comfortable rooms, wooden beams, 2 large open fireplaces, and comfortable luxurious furnishings.

There was plenty of space indoors and out, to sit and relax, play, swim, sunbath, or dine/bbq outside. We spent whole evenings by the pool and took advantage of the outdoor kitchen and bbq.

It was tempting to just stay where we were and not even venture out!

We did however manage to venture out for a walk and drove to the International Sports Training Complex La Cité Verte As recommended by you, we also visited the 'Feria Festival' at the nearby town of Saint Sever which had a very Spanish feel with Beer Tents fabulous local food a fairground attractions for the kids and Music and Dance on the main stage. I'd definitely recommend a visit.

We had such a chilled time at your home and we will definitely be rebooking next year and recommending your home to others.

Relaxing holiday in Super charactful house

The house is stunning. Full of charm, and character with plenty of space yet warm and welcoming. The setting is relaxing. We were a group of seven, 3 adults and four teenage kids. We spent many hours by the pool, facilitated by the convenience of the poolside kitchen. Inside the house, the rooms are generous in size. The beds and bedding are very good quality The ensuite in our bedroom was fine, rather than luxurious. The house was very clean and the large corridor running from the front door/window to the opposite back window created a pleasant airy and light feel. The kitchen is simple but has everything you need including modern essentials like a dishwasher. There are some lovely pieces of antique furniture and the lounge/ dining room is a real gem which includes a mezzanine. when we managed to motivate ourselves to move from the house and this was very difficult as we felt so relaxed , we visited the local village and a ferme auberge . We also went further afield, to a fabulous beach -approximately 1.5 hrs. Pau is about 30 minutes away and this is a wonderful old university town. We did not make it to Biarritz but it is definitely on our list when we return next time. We definitely want to return.

The choice of airport is unparalleled ranging from Bordeaux (165 km), Biarritz (115 km), Pau (63 km), Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrenees (110 km) Toulouse (202 km) and Bergerac (200 km). These distances might appear to be substantial but do not forget that France is a vast country and therefore, getting around involves driving a fair bit. Continental people are used to this concept.

Whether you want a base from which to explore the area, home to the production of duck foie gras and fine wine, or you choose to relax around the pool at home, this location caters for every type of holiday.

The village of Horsarrieu is situated on the pilgrimage route of Santiago de Compostela. Walks and bike rides are very pleasant.

You can indulge in a variety of activities: you may want to go for day trips to the white sandy beaches of the côte landaise (97,8 km to Hossegor) or for a combination of shopping and sunbathing on the côte Basque in chic Saint-Jean-de-Luz (121 km) or in opulent Biarritz (115 km) . Whatever your age, the the Dune du Pilat is a must (135 km from the house). if you are landing in Bordeaux, before heading down towards the Landes, you might want to stop there for a lot of fun rolling down this giant sand dune (65 km from Bordeaux airport to the Dune du Pilat).

A return trip to urban Pau (63 km), to Lourdes with its famous grotto (111 km) or to the Pyrénées Mountains is also achievable (112.2 km to Gourette) within the day.

Gourette, with an altitude of between 1,400 and 2,400 metres offers the largest skiable trails in the Pyrenees Mountains spreading over 90 hectares of slopes. There are also snowboarding and snowshoe trails. During the summer, visits to the valley of the Gave d'Ossau and its lakes are recommended especially if you enjoy hiking and rock climbing in which case the ascent of the Pic du Midi d'Ossau (2,884 metres) is a rewarding challenge. However, if all this sounds like hard work, you are welcome to opt for a relaxing day around the pool!

If you are landing in Bergerac, you might want to drive and spend a full day and night in the Vézere Valley before heading down to the Landes to see the world famous Lascaux caves, listed by UNESCO as French world heritage. The valley contains 147 prehistoric sites and 25 painted caves.

Much closer to home, the town of Hagetmau, which has around 4,400 inhabitants, is 5 minutes away from the property (3.4 km). It is known for its Olympic swimming pool built in the middle of a sports complex with, amongst others things, several tennis courts open to the public and a nine hole golf course at reasonable fees (and subject to availability). There are basketball and tennis training camps at set dates during the summer for children.

All convenient stores are in Hagetmau including major supermarkets, a medical centre and several doctors, 2 gyms, a small horse riding centre and several restaurants.

Saint Sever is an affluent and historical town with around 4,800 inhabitants. It is very beautiful! It is 14 minutes away from the property (11.2 km) and offers many cultural events during the summer including an excellent jazz festival. Its church is a Romanesque building of the 12th century, with seven apses, which once belonged to the Benedictine abbey founded in the 10th century. The abbey of Saint-Sever was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1998, as part of the World Heritage Sites of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France.

Le Grand Moun, an impressive shopping mall, is to be found in Mont-de-Marsan. It comprises an 8,000 square metre Leclerc store in addition to around 85 retailing units.

The town of Mont-de-Marsan is nationally best known for its front-line Air base, home to two squadrons of Dassault Rafale, the most advanced French fighter aircraft. The town has all amenities including 2 hospitals. The Saturday market has exceptional food including paellas and roast chickens cooked before your very eyes.

The whole department is culturally influenced by neighbouring Spain and all the towns and cities (and even villages) in the Landes department organise FERIA festivities. These are basically organised street parties extending over a period of more or less 5 days. Participants turn up dressed in red and white and enjoy food, drinks and music; courses landaises and fireworks are usually offered in the bigger towns. These ferias spread over the whole of the summer so guests who want to discover these exciting parties will always be able to find one in a location somewhere in the department. Note, however, that the best are in Dax and Bayonne.

Biarritz is a very opulent city, also famous for its surfing. You might want to offer an extra (quite costly but worthwhile) holiday to your children by sending them to one of the many camps which combine french classes in the morning with surfing in the afternoon while you stay at Le Grand Lamarque working hard on ........ sampling some wine, in peace, all day long, around the pool.
