West Coast Florida’s Best Kept Secret: Little Gasparilla Island:
Located just north of Boca Grande on the South West Coast of Florida, Little Gasparilla Island is a hidden Gem. The Island is about 7 miles long but less than a mile wide. The north end of the island hosts a State Park while the secluded south end is dotted with single family stilt homes and townhouses. There are no cars on Little Gasparilla Island, you’ll need to arrive by water taxi or boat.
Once on the island, the most popular mode of transport is by golf cart or simply a quiet stroll.
The fishing is great both inshore and offshore. Snook, redfish and tarpon are in abundance here. It is a fisherman’s paradise.
Shelling is legendary on the pristine white powder sand beach. You’ll find many different species of shells along with the sand dollar and star fish. When you get tired of shell collecting, just take a dip in the quiet waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
The old Florida beauty of the island is evident all around you and makes this a perfect place to just sit back and relax.
Local wildlife include the ospreys making nests on the powerlines, gopher tortoises walking along with you down the sand paths, egrets and herons catching their dinner out of the water, and don’t forget the dolphin and manatees.
The tropical landscape is beautiful with seagrapes, seaoats and all types of palm trees. Florida wildflowers are in abundance for color, and a stray cactus even pops up here and there. Everything seems to slowly sway with the gulf breeze.
Saving the best for last would be the absolute mesmerizing sunsets. If you haven’t seen a West Coast Florida Sunset before, you are missing out. Little Gasparilla Island is home to some of the most beautiful sunsets in the world.
"Once You Have Slept on an Island
Once you have slept on an island
You’ll never be quite the same
You may look as you looked before
And go by the same old name
You may hustle about in street and,
You may sit at home and sew,
But you’ll forever see blue water
And wheeling gulls
Wherever your feet may go.
You may chat with neighbors
Of this and that.
And close to the fire keep,
But you’ll hear ships’ whistles
And lighthouse bells
And tides beat through your sleep.
And you won’t know why
And you can’t say how
Such a thing upon you came.
But once you have slept on an island
You won’t be quite the same.
- Rachel Fields"
Hello! We are the owners of the Sundance Beach house. It was "love at first sight" when we first vacationed on Little Gasparilla Island and now a dream come true that we own a piece of this Island paradise.
Sundance Beach house/Bart & Emily purchased this house in 2015
The incredible view from the sun deck...the sunsets, the beach, natural beauty. The house is equipped with all the comforts of home and for a great day at the beach.
Seven miles of Beach...The island is a private island without any commercial development. There are no restaurants, cars, or paved roads. Golf carts only! Access to the island is only available via a water taxi (or you can bring your own boat). Come to this place if you are seeking a beautiful break away from the rest of the world. Wildlife is abundant. Kayaking with dolphins, fish and wildlife. Fishing is some of the best in Florida!
The drive down from Illinois with 3 dogs was horrible and we had some bad bad luck on the way there and getting situated but once we did it was great. The house is located perfectly, so many shells, everyone was friendly. The house was clean and Paul is a great guy!! They had the kitchen stocked well with pans, plates, etc. by the end of the vacation we were sure we'd be coming back. We used Shane and Chuck from island boat rentals we highly recommend them. Such nice guys that really care about you having fun. I was treated very poorly by the pirate water taxi guy so I was thankful for shane and chuck who went above and beyond for us.
We really enjoyed it! Beautiful view of the gulf, great fishing in the bay, lots of life on the island we saw dolphins, manatees, coyotes and even a bobcat! Sand dollars and other shells are plentiful along the beach.
Thank you Bart and Emilie!
Thank you Paul!
Third time at Sundance beach house. Better each visit! Weather was great with walks on secuded pristine beach. Quiet and relaxing. Able to book a quick fishing trip for second time with Captain Ochs and had plenty of fresh fish for the week. Able the kayak with dolphins and check out the mangroves between the island and mainland. Great trip.
We rented Sundance for an anniversary getaway and found exactly what we were looking for - peace and tranquility and time to disconnect. We spent our days taking long walks on the beach, searching for seashells to take back to our little ones, relaxing and reading in the hammock and sunroom. The house host was friendly and helpful! We enjoyed getting to know him! The house was well stocked with all essentials for your time away. Don't forget to bring bug spray if you want to sit on the sand while watching the sunset :) It was great to have a golf cart and kayak while we were there and we also recommend taking a tour with Brett! We already have our next trip booked - this time with the whole family! We would definitely recommend a trip to Sundance if you are looking for a relaxing getaway!
I rented Sundance and was worried that my adult college children would be bored, but they loved it! We spent our days swimming and relaxing. I thought that there would not be enough to do but it turned out there wasn't enough to do everything. We explored the island, saw lots of sea life, went shelling and enjoyed playing at the beach. The home was wonderful, it had everything you could want. We grilled or relaxed on the outdoor hammock. Watching the sunset every evening from the porch was spectacular. Emily was always available if we needed her and the home manager Paul was outstanding! I hope to return soon! Thanks Emily and your family for sharing your beautiful home with us and thank you Paul for all you did in making are stay exceptional!
We enjoyed a relaxing, two-week summer stay on Little Gasparilla at the Sundance beach house. This was our third summer on the island, and so far this home ranks at the top of our list. The comfortable home is as-described on the website. The rooms were tidy, clean, and plenty spacious for our family and a few in-and-out guests we had. The home was decorated very tastefully, which I appreciated. Being a Florida native, I prefer places that reflect a more natural Florida rather than the typical tourist version, and this fit the bill. Paul, the home manager, was friendly and very helpful. He assisted us with our belongings both at the beginning and end of our stay. You can tell he takes pride in his care of the home. The path/distance from the dock to the house was quick and easy, although parking your boat could be challenging when the island is busy. The only selfish wishes I could have to make this home even better would be to have a screened porch (in addition to the awesome sunroom), and to have a boardwalk to the beach. ;o) Renting the home was also safe and efficient; I liked being able to book through the website rather than sending my check to some random person at a random address. Our family enjoyed all the usuals here: swimming, shelling, boating, fishing, running (for us crazy folk who run for fun), and simply sitting and relaxing with the view. In all, this home was great and we'd definitely recommend it to others.
Groceries: Publix grocery store (8725 Placida Rd Placida, FL 33946).
Parking: Eldred's Marina (6301 Boca Grande Causeway, Placida, FL 33946; parking rate is $6 per day) and ride a water taxi to the island.
Restaurants: There is a restaurant, Rum Bay, on the north end of Island, located on Palm Island past Dom Pedro State Park which is very long walk (~six miles). There are restaurants reachable by water taxi or boat, Boca Grande is about a half-hour boat ride away. A favorite is Cabbage Key, south of Boca Grande.
