Outstanding villa in an amazing location!
El Figueral is undoubtedly luxury accommodation with River and mountain views to die for. The fishing is all you could hope for on the Ebro and David has a wealth of information to help both beginners and experienced fishermen. The house and pool area are extremely comfortable and there is plenty to do for the whole family in the surrounding area. Highly recommended.
An absolutely stunning property and view. My mother is asking when we can return. A lovely relaxing time.
The nearest beaches of El Perrello, L’Ametlla and L’Ampolla are around 35-45 min away by car and are much quieter than the larger beaches of Cambrils and Salou around 60 min drive. Salou is the nearest commercialised beach on the Costa Dorada with Port Adventura, Ferrari World and Water world on its doorstep.
Nearest airport, Reus 1-hour drive away, scheduled flights by Ryanair, charters by Thomson’s and First Choice at peak season. Castellon is about 1.15 hours’ drive with Ryanair flying in daily. Barcelona and Valencia airports are, about 2.15 hour’s drive and serviced by most major airlines plus EasyJet and Ryanair. Brittany Ferries operate 1- or 2-night services Portsmouth/Plymouth - Bilbao/Santander drive time from the ports is around 5-6 hrs, roads are generally very good. Alternative, Euro Tunnel or ferries to Calais, drive time is around 21hrs through France.
The nearest Village is Benifallet 2.5km away with supermarkets, butchers, fruiters, bakers, bank and a selection of restaurants and bars. 14 km away is the much larger Riverside Town of Tortosa with its train station and a good selection of stores, supermarkets, restaurants and an indoor fruit, meat and fish market that’s worth a visit. 25-30 minutes’ drive is the un-spoilt fishing village of L'Ametlla De Mar, with its seafood restaurants and local bars and the mighty river Ebro delta, which over the millennia has deposited debris to form the Ebro delta, now classified as a nature reserve (providing sanctuary to marine species and birds alike) provides access to km's of sandy beaches.
El Figueral is a remote and quiet rural property located on the River Ebro and about 2.5km from the nearest village of Benifallet. It is within easy reach of the beaches and fishing villages of the Costa Dorado, Terra Alter and Priorat wine regions and offers, private fishing for Catfish and carp. For the energetic there is cycling, golf, walking, kayaking, exploring and more. It is surrounded by history and for those who want to enjoy the sun, Mediterranean smells, food and wine of real Spain this is an ideal location. Our keyholders can advise on all things relating to your stay and even direct you to restaurants you would normally need a compass and map to find but serve amazing Spanish or international menus.
The property is positioned on the remains of an old Farm house dating back around 400 years and enduring the odd fire and being a forward look out post for the International Brigade during the Spanish Civil war. Opposing armies camped on either side of the Rio Ebro during the "Batalla del Ebro" indeed; the house suffered damage from artillery fire. Thankfully it is now repaired and with a few modern necessities like mains electricity, water and swimming pool! If you are interested in the history of the civil war visit the historical town of Amposta 40 min drive away as it was the centre of the battle.
15 min drive is Miravet, with buildings rising from the river, it is one of the most picturesque villages of the region, with a long history and art heritage: The Majestic Templar Castle, the Old Church, watermill, shipyard, pottery and one of the last fluvial ferries the "Paso de la Barca". The ferry crosses the river using only the rivers current. Enjoy wine? The Terra Alta DO and Priorat region a DOCa (Denominación de Origen Calificada, the highest wine classification) are on your doorstep, indeed the Priorat is the only other wine region in Spain to have the same quality standard of the more famous Rioja region. These area's picturesque and produces strong full-bodied white and full-bodied reds. Visit the beautiful "wine cathedral" of Pinell de Brai, Cèsar Martinell’s most beautiful modernist cooperative building. This is the area were Picasso started out on one of his most fruitful stages, cubism, in the village of Horta de Sant Joan.

About David and Angeles
Hi, we are David and Angeles, we have 5 boys that have completed university and we both grew up and worked in cities, London and Valencia. After running a business and teaching we decided to move to Spain, Angeles home country for a more relaxed life style. We grow olives, rent El-Figueral, I fish and Angeles teaches Mindfulness to individuals and corporate clients. Otherwise we enjoy a much more relaxed way of life in this very sociable corner of Spain.
David and Angeles purchased this Farmhouse in 2004
Why David and Angeles chose Benifallet
Our remote location is ideal for fishing the River Ebro from our private swims for carp and catfish and we can provide tackle, bait, licenses, boats and guiding to our guests. It's also ideal for walking, bird watching and cycling. We are not too far from the Mediterranean and close to the river village of Benifallet with its bars and restaurants. David’s primary reasons for purchasing the property was his passion for fishing while mine was to find a tranquil setting to set up my counselling practice making use of my skills in psychology. El Figueral meets both requirements with its private access to a very productive stretch of the river Ebro where David is never far away to talk fishing and the tranquillity of the location where my clients can explore their inner selves guided by my hypnotherapy experience.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
El Figueral to us has many amazing benefits but perhaps a guest sums up our views: We were a family of 10 gathering to celebrate a significant birthday so expectations were high. The birthday girl's heart's desire was to laze by a pool in beautiful surrounding and this Finca ticked all the boxes. The view from the pool area, high above the river, is truly spectacular, particularly at sunset. I photographed the view from every angle possible and have already framed photographs to remind me of happy times. It was also fascinating to look down at activity on and around the river through the binoculars which the owner has made available at the finca. The property itself is very well equipped- we ate at home every evening as one of our number is an exceptional cook- fantastic paella, all the ingredients purchased at the local supermarket. Late night watching DVDS from a very well stocked library- Twelve Angry Men enjoyed by all. Shutters on all windows and guaranteed silence at night meant we all slept really well. Breakfast outside on a gorgeous patio after an early morning swim. There are some lovely local beaches although we preferred to be poolside. Still playing ball at 9pm with the pool lit up as it got dark and the water like a warm bath. We followed the recommendations of our host for some late lunches in the local village- Sunday's lunch started at 4pm. Great food, excellent value. Cava Thursday at another local restaurant was properly celebrated followed by a riverboat trip passing our ' home' looking spectacular from below. We joined the party for a week only, the birthday girl and her husband were lucky enough to spend a fortnight and founds lots to explore in the area though if , like us, your main aim is to hunker down in a beautiful place, cook, eat delicious food, drink great wine, this property is perfect in every way. It helped of course that temperatures were in the 30s every day and not a cloud in the sky. Review Submitted: Aug 21, 2016 LIZ H
