Stayed here 3 nights in august 2016 and loved it. Brand new guest house and everything was provided. The views of the Lake and mountains beyond were incredible. We enjoyed the feeding of the local owl and accesd to a conoe on the lake. Take the hike to the river beyond the lake to see the river worth it...
Our stay was peaceful and interesting. The view from the apartment was excellent and the hosts very nice. I enjoyed visiting with both. We'd stay there again without hesitation.
This lovely cabin is set in the beautiful and remote rural setting of Nelchina, AK just off the Glenn Highway 40 miles west of Glenallen and 100 miles east of Palmer. Allen and Roxanne were friendly hosts who came outside to talk to us. We even got to meet some of their playful grandchildren. The cabin is on their large property on a lake. The cabin is really beautiful. Built by Allen's own hands, it is very modern with everything a family of 4 needs. There is a double bed just inside the door and a king bed in the single bedroom. The kitchen has everything you need. We did not see any restaurants or stores nearby, so bring your food to cook. We did see some playful brown bears on the highway about 15 miles away, so bear viewing is possible. It was one of our favorite stops on our 10 day vacation.
The Schooner Lake rental apartment is almost new, very private, very spacious and very well equipped, including a full kitchen. It has lovely views of Schooner Lake and the mountains behind, with a canoe or paddle boat available for guest use, and the added bonus of a family of Great Horned Owls living in the woods around the property. We found that it even exceeded the description on the website. The photos were very accurate, but since they were taken an extra double bed has been installed in the large entry foyer, which might be useful for a family or a group of friends travelling together. The apartment was very clean and well-maintained and lots of staple foods and kitchen consumables (foil, cling wrap, etc) were supplied. The owners were friendly and helpful but left us alone when we did not need assistance. We would definitely recommend this property to anyone wanting to explore the Glenn Highway and points further east. We understood from the description that we would need to be largely self-contained - which suited us perfectly. There is a very small & quirky local store in Nelchina (about 5 miles E), but visitors should bring most of their provisions with them.
We stayed over the 4th of July weekend. Thankfully, the weather was really nice. This cabin was perfect. We had originally planned to stay in Valdez but when I stumbled across this lovely cabin, I was lovestruck! You couldn't ask for a more beautiful setting. The views are like a magnificent painting of Alaska scenery.
Our hosts, the Millers, treated us like family. They let us borrow a boat and recommended a family friendly hike and a great fishing lake. My daughter's caught their first fish on this trip!
I can't say enough good about this place. We can't wait to go back.
Thank you Miller family you are awesome and your cabin is too!
This was one of the most memorable places that we stayed during our two week vacation in Alaska. Roxanne and Allen were gracious hosts that we enjoyed talking to during our stay! The view of the lake and mountains from the back deck of the cabin was amazing. We took a few postcard quality pictures of the views while we were there. My husband and I both want to thank you for suggesting a visit to Valdez. The weather was prefect and the drive there was absolutely beautiful! If we are fortunate enough to return to Alaska, we would definitely like to stay here again!
