Perched on a hill overlooking Nice, historic stone farmhouse with lovely views of the Mediterranean and surrounding hills. The property faces south & is seated on a very old olive grove on an acre of land. Originally a Roman watchtower, our entirely renovated 'Mas Provençal' was built in several stages over the centuries, and is steeped with character & charm. The house is an ideal family holiday home, with lots of outdoor and indoor space, including a big heatable swimming pool, a swing set, fruit trees (including delicious figs in August), a ping pong table and barbecue. The garden is perfectly safe for children & the land is protected by a wall and intercom for visitors. Tennis courts are 5 minutes away 7 the seaside is just 15 minutes down the road. Lots of mountain hiking and climbing too.

Hi, I'm an american artist, living in France for the past 40 years with my wife and family.
Edgar Montana purchased this Villa in 1998
Why Edgar Montana chose Gairaut
Tons of character and charm, in a lovely setting, shaded by hundred year old olive and cypress trees, big heatable pool.
What makes this Villa unique
Beautiful setting with view of the sea, pool and covered outdoor dining area, a unique historic stone farmhouse dating back to the roman period, including genuine medieval fireplaces.

A magical holiday
My family and I stayed in Edgar’s beautiful home to celebrate my 70th birthday. I wanted to go somewhere special and wasn’t disappointed. Five adults and three children enjoyed the many facilities offered including a lovely pool. We were able to visit central Nice and the surrounding countryside returning to Serena Antica for barbecues and meals in the local restaurants.
Poor location, overpriced, mosquitoes, cheaply furnished, some dangerous fittings
A total disappointment for a three-generation celebration of a 70th birthday.
In 40 years, this is the worst accommodation I have ever had!
Location: definitely not the 15 minutes advertised to the sea. It's in Gairaut, not Nice; it was not properly explained on the initial description. It's a 10 minute drive and park at the end of the tram line and a further 30 minutes from there to Nice seaside. By car, other beaches are up to a 40 minute drive. It's on a steep hill, in the middle of nowhere on a relatively busy and narrow road with no pavement, and a car is required for a trip even to the local grocery store.
Garden: half of the garden is dirt. All seating is rickety, old and extremely uncomfortable with very few cushions for the garden chairs.
Interior: children's bedroom- damp room next to utility room with only a curtain to separate. No window. The 2 rooms in the tower are plainly dangerous to get to, very steep stairs, hand rails broken or loose, very hard to access and carry luggage to.
Cracked windows, mosquito nets with big holes flapping in the breeze, light fittings not working, electrical fitting dangerous e.g. could pull oven fully out, some bedside table drawers not possible to open, majority of crockery chipped; the furniture is generally an assembly of mismatched junk.
Mosquitoes: big problem, have seen it on a previous review. Initially owners left us with a box filled with empty bottles of mosquito deterrents until I complained. At times impossible to be outside, all 10 of us including 4 children ended up with big mosquito bites all over our bodies.
Owners: unfriendly. When I mentioned that we were 2 towels short I was questioned on the number of bedrooms we were using.... this for towels that looked beyond use for pets.
Overall, I'd never recommend this property or area! One to avoid, plenty of better places in the area as we experienced in our first week on French Riviera.
A pack of lies by unscrupulous people seeking an easy refund!
For the true picture, we respectfully invite you to read our comprehensive guest reviews, where you will find a 5-star rating overall.
To address our guest's remarks: Apart from the normal presence of mosquitos throughout the French Riviera where our property is located, everything else stated by our imaginative guests is grossly misleading when not blatant lies. This is in direct contrast with all our other reviews.
We take pride in welcoming and attending to our guests with courtesy and heart.
Never once, throughout the course of their stay, did these guests call us to complain or address any of their "exhaustive" list of issues, clearly drawn up in an attempt to dishonestly obtain an easy refund after spending the week on the property.
For the curious holiday-home seeker, one easily verifiable falsehood concerns the location of our property. We are indeed located on Gairaut hill, and not in the middle of nowhere! Gairaut is an integral part of Nice and is in fact the city’s greenest and most prestigious residential neighborhood. A quick look on Google will also show that there is no such thing as an unpaved road in this neighborhood!, or anywhere else in Nice, for that matter.
We have a 2nd holiday property in the area which we proudly rent through Homeaway under listing 50366. If you have the time, do kindly have a look at our guest reviews for this home as well; it too carries a 5-star rating.
Please feel free to request all further details needed with respect to the misinformation given in this guest review. We will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.
Rustic historic stone watch tower on a pleasant property with good access.
The first immediate impression of this property met all our expectations! The large grounds , pool and covered patio allowed our 4 young grand children to have much freedom and fun! The numerous toys were much appreciated! Many a meal was enjoyed outside under the covered patio as well as in the kitchen open plan area! The kitchen was well equipped with a bbq close by! The tv living room was comfortable with large couches! The bedroom on the top floor of the tower was disappointing, as it was inaccessible due to the very steep staircase , for our young children! The access to the second bedroom in the tower is via a narrow staircase which made it impossible to take suitcases up there!
The downstairs 3 bedrooms were adequate but the road noise and ventilation was inadequate when shutters were closed. The mosquito nets were not fit for purpose! Insufficient fans and coils could not keep them at bay!
Amazing historical home and property!
Antica Serena was a wonderful home base for four friends exploring the region. In the evenings, we came home to relax, cook dinners, eat outside and swim. We made lifetime memories in this eclectic and inviting home. We would definitely stay here again.
beautiful house with great views
Beautiful house located in the hills outside nice. Very well set-up for family’s to keep all entertained. Very easy to get into nice once you get the hang of the buses(25,63 and 76) bring you into henri sappia where you can hop on a tram etc. Very happy with the house and facilities
What a fantastic get-away
Myself, my family and our best friends rented this property over October had term. And we are so glad we did!
The property easily sleeps 10, with mixtures of kids and adults. The top two bedrooms in the ‘tower’ as the kids called it, gave spectacular views over Nice. The ground floor comprised of a bathroom and toilet room, entrance way with plenty of space to store coats and shoes, then a living room with TV. The best part was the huge kitchen/dining area with its warm golden glow. The kitchen then leads out onto a beautiful patio where we ate most meals and then onto the huge garden and swimming pool (both fenced and with an alarm). The gardens are fantastic for the kids to explore with ping pong, swings, hammocks, plenty of hiding places. The downstairs has three double bedrooms (one en suite), a bathroom and a laundry room. There are washing machines and tumble dryers as well as washing lines outside to dry your swimming stuff. The house is child friendly with baby gate, cots and plenty of toys to keep the littlest happy. There is a large hyper market twenty mins away, glorious beaches and plenty of places to visit. A car is definitely essential as the villa is up a steep hill.
Edgar the owner is an absolute pleasure to deal with and was available to talk to at any time had we needed it- but we didn’t because everything was perfect. We will definitely be returning, thank you so much for making a long-overdue holiday so special.
