Romantic Luxury Cottage on the River Rother for Two in Historic Rye near Sea

Bedrooms 1
Space 538 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 - 5 nights

About the property

Located in Rye, close to Camber Sands and Romney Marsh. The Sunday Times listed The Cabin by The River as one of five romantic rentals in their Best Cottages for the Summer (2017) feature.

This stylishly designed space combines an eclectic mix of contemporary and mid century modern furnishings providing high spec boutique accommodation in a sought-after, riverside location.

This cabin is situated on the banks of the River Rother overlooking Romney Marsh with Rye's ancient Citadel rising in the distance. Rye is a fascinating historic town and one of the original Cinque Ports. It has become known as a chic and arty destination with its boutique style shops, antique emporiums, galleries and choice of eateries, including pubs, teashops and restaurants. There is even an independent cinema with two screens. There are various festivals throughout the year including the Rye International Jazz Festival, Rye Scallop Festival, the Rye Arts Festival and the famous bonfire procession and fireworks. For beach lovers, Camber is close by with stunning sand dunes and an expansive seascape. You can pass the time swimming, beachcombing or trying your hand at paddle boarding (SUP), windsurfing or kitesurfing from Jury's Gap. The beautifully eerie Dungeness is around 20 minutes away and fashionable St Leonards and Hastings are a 20 minute short hop by train or car.

The cabin design is modern rustic meets beach house, with interior walls clad in beautifully weathered timber and wooden board on the floors and outside on the deck. The entrance to the cabin is via French doors which lead you from your own decked area. The accommodation is spacious and open-plan. Immediately to the left is a stylish lounge area with a very comfortable Matthew Hilton Balzac sofa and large Smart TV which can be angled either towards the lounge area or the bed. Beyond the lounge area is sumptuous emperor bed made up with goosedown pillows and duvet, and Egyptian cotton sheets – a perfect love nest! The painted headboard houses bedside lamps and cleverly disguised storage for clothes etc. To the right of the entrance is the kitchen and dining area with a mid-century modern dining table and chairs. The small but well-equipped kitchen consists of an electric oven and hob, fridge, microwave and Nespresso machine. The bathroom has a toilet and basin and a shower over a large bath. The bathroom is partly clad in beautiful Moroccan zeliges tiles.

Outside on the decked area, there are two wooden sun loungers and fire pits on the shingle between the cabin and the river.

Why Anna Carver chose Rye

When we built the Cabin by the River, we wanted to create a romantic hideaway for couples, mixing luxury with super comfort. A Matthew Hilton Balzac feather stuffed leather sofa, mid century modern dining furniture and Emery et cie tiles set against the vintage wood wall cladding give a warmth and sensuality to the space. Goose down duvet and pillows with Egyptian cotton sheets on the emperor sized Tempur mattress make for blissful sleep.

From outside the Cabin, you can see Rye's ancient Citadel rising up from the Marsh in the near distance. In the Citadel you can relax in one of the many excellent cafes and teashops including The Fig, The White House and the Apothecary. The Lazy Baker offers wonderful freshly baked sourdough loaves and homebaked cakes. You can walk the cobbled path of the famous Mermaid Street and visit The Mermaid Inn known for its links with smugglers and in particular the infamous Hawkhurst Gang. Or visit Lamb House where writers Henry James and E F Benson once lived. The antique shops along the Quay and the various interior design and homeware retailers such as Pale and Interesting and The Shop Next Door are worth exploring. Rye also boosts a number of good restaurants and pubs. Try The George Grill and Tuscan Kitchen but don't forget to book. Some of the pubs offer great food too such as The Standard in the Citadel and nearby Globe Inn Marsh (a 4 minute walk from the Cabin). Simply Italia for pizzas, The Hoof and The Union for steaks and burgers are some of the other places worth checking out.

For relaxation, consider some pampering at the renowned Rye Retreat Spa or visit Wideye, an ethical health and beauty store with spa. Otherwise, we can arrange for a masseur to visit you at home.

Outside of Rye, there are so many places and areas to explore. Camber Sands with its vast beach and sand dunes is very close by as are the beautiful pebble beaches at Winchelsea Beach and Pett Level. Mysterious and stunning Dungeness is 20 minutes drive away.

Fashionable Hastings and Saint Leonards can be reached by train from Rye or car in 20 minutes. Play crazy golf, visit the brand new Pier, browse the antique and bric a brac shops, visit the Smugglers Museum, see Art at the Jerwood Gallery, listen to live music and enjoy some good restaurants such as St Clements and The Custom House.

You can also visit Hastings Country Park with its beautiful cliff walks. For those wishing to explore the many castles dotted inland and along the coast, why not visit Pevensey, Bodiam or Hever Castle. Head towards Northiam and discover Great Dixter House and Gardens, or Smallhythe Place near Tenterden - both lovely houses and gardens to visit and enjoy all year round.
