Within the southern tip of the Dordogne with its dramatic history, stunning bastide villages, wine, sunshine, chateaux, restaurants, night life, markets & vide greniers etc, Calfour gite is a large 4 bedroomed property set on its own elevation with stunning views over the Dropt valley. It has a 8 x 4 private infinity pool and extensive gardens and land to roam and explore.
Calfour gite is a spacious, light and sunny, renovated, 4 bed, 2 bathroom gite. Situated within its own unspoilt and natural 11 hectares of meadow and spruce highland. From animal routes we have created many nature trails for you to explore. Our land is a private sanctuary for you alone to enjoy. There are no near neighbours, the gite is private, quiet and secluded. Comfortable with a sunny 8 x 4 private pool with roman steps and heat retaining cover. The land falls away poolside to create an infinity pool with views of over 180 degrees of countryside. Rural, yet still within 3.5 km of the beautiful bastide town of Eymet with its many restaurants, summer night life and stunning 13th century buildings.
Sleeping 9 adults and 2 babies in cots, our gite is suitable for friends and / or extended family wanting space, peace & privacy away from the hustle & bustle of everyday life, yet only a short drive or bike ride from one of South West Frances' most popular Bastide towns. Saying that, we often have just one couple staying who just want the space, peace and proximity. Whether you are a large of small group of people, whether it is winter or summer, we make sure that your holiday is exactly what you need. The pool is usually from the 1st May, although if weather permits we will open it sooner. We have adjusted out of season prices to accomodate this, please be assured you will not be cold as we have added in the heating if needed during Spring and Autumn.
Calfour is a very spacious single story long house consisting originally of the main farmhouse dating back 200 years or more, attached stables and barns. The property has been added to over the years but retains a lot of its original features and charm. Large open fireplace, original flooring, massive foot thick beams and metre thick walls. It also has a 2 metre wide corridor internally with access to all bedrooms and bathrooms which we believe helps keep the place cool. Please see the floor plan which is with the photos.
Our gite has excellent space consisting of a large open plan lounge with a traditional open and working fireplace and games room with a full size pool table and bar, a very well equipped and large kitchen, four bedrooms, a full bathroom with WC, bath, walk in shower and vanity wash hand basin and a further shower room with walk in shower and vanity wash hand basin and a separate WC off of the entrance hall, all on one level.
The sleeping arrangements are currently arranged - bedroom 1 with double bed and single bed, bedroom 2 with a king size bed, bedroom 3 with twin beds or superking ( which are made up as 2 singles together), and the fourth also with 2 separate single beds. We provide you with both bath towels and swim towels and all of the linen you need for bathrooms, bedrooms and kitchen. We also have 2 cots with lots of soft baby towels, bedding and linen. We have plenty of standard fans, although these are not really needed with our thick stone walls and deep window cils, thick walls and shutters. The gite remains cool inside even during the hottest of summers.
The living areas have a combination of 5 sofas allowing space for everybody to spread out, dining table and chairs, desk and a full range of English Freeview TV stations. An office area has a desk and the wifi is strong with little or no problems. The decked area also has good wifi for those of you that still need to contact the outside world, but still want to enjoy the sun. The outside decked area is covered for shade with a large table for al fresco dining, a BBQ and comfy chairs.
Set in approximately 30 acres or 11 hectares of its own land, it is an ideal retreat for nature enthusiasts wanting to explore, experience and photograph the local wildlife. We have deer, sanglier ( wild boar), hares, rabbits as well as numerous birds including many birds of prey buzzards, kites, falcons, harrier, also herons, hoopoe and the exquisite song of the golden oriole. We have created our own nature trails taking you through our reserve, with a map just in case!
In 2018 we were delighted to have been shown to us many species of indigenous Orchids growing all over our land, both high and low, from a previous owner of Calfour. The foot tall Lizard Orchids being a favourite. We have added a short break Orchid Season for 2019 where we can organise an Orchid walk with a local English speaking guide. A small fee, please ask.
Please feel free to help yourselves to fruit and nuts from our trees which include apple, plum, cherry, fig, hazelnut & walnut. Cherry season is June and the mulitude of blackberries are in August.
Upon your arrival we will meet you to show you the essentials. We leave you a welcome pack on arrival contains baguettes, butter, pate, milk, cheeses, a bottle of red local wine and rosé local wine and a large pack of crisps. Even if you arrive at midnight after a long drive, we try and make life a little easier for you, with no charge of course. We also provide a few dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid and washing machine liquid, and various new cloths and cleaning sponges etc. a few T bags and coffee posettes for the coffee machine. We provide hand wash and shower wash. Both swim towels and bath towels are also provided. This gite is our home during the winter months and so is set up as such with all you may require. We understand how important it is to get it right for you to enjoy your stay without stress or added expense. We had guests of 4 generations and 2 x 3 generations our first season, each coming and going when they could and using Calfour as a much loved base for the families to come together. An absolute delight for all involved.
A good friend has described our gite as a home and not a holiday home. We wanted to provide a luxurious and comfortable holiday experience. A place where you can feel at home on your holiday.
A footnote as it is now January 2019. Nearly booked, we are looking forward to this year’s guests, and some returning families. We continue to renovate Calfour and Michael has just finished the dry stone wall at the entrance to Calfour, complete with new hand painted sign. Gone is the bramble patch. Poolside, we have again destroyed the bramble patch and when we know that they have perished we will plant a slope of low maintenance clover. Within the old barn stone walls we are planting wild flowers and the area will be a pretty grassed area. The garden to the right of the entrance has also had a makeover and is almost bramble free. We will continue to make Calfour a holiday venue to treasure.
