The lively port town of Marseillan, on the inland sea 'Etang de Thau', surrounded by vineyards, is certainly becoming one of the most valued seaside holiday destinations. It is a combination of the old flavour of fishing practices, wine-making, nearby Roman sites and the modern, with smart restaurants, sandy beaches, wine tasting and activities, that makes Marseillan unique. This wonderful house hidden in the centre of the old village, 300 metres from the port, has been completely rebuilt on the inside to develop a mezzanine level bathed in sunlight, natural lime finished walls and all modern comfort including air-conditioning and internet ADSL access.
We also have a web page with more information and invite you to contact us for details.
Willem, a Dutchman, retired to France in 1996 and lives with Ann Mary in the Lot et Garonne. The house in Marseillan was a replacement for the Montreal, Quebec, home of Ann Mary, when she came to France permanently and left her Canadian life behind.
Willem + Ann Mary Stanton Wijgerse purchased this house in 2000
Nenuphar was a simple village house when Ann Mary and Willem bought it but that allowed them to treat the house as a 'folly' and to develop it according to their personal whims without much concern for existing beautiful features. In fact the 800 year old history of the house on the city wall had to be discovered by renovation and highlighted by personal art and artefacts. This town is so special with such a long and interesting history of many cultures and reactions to the Etang.
Ann Mary went to a fresco course in an old ochre factory in Roussillon at the same time as the house was beginning to be developed and this led to an interest in lime finishes and the use of many traditional techniques such as tadelakt for bathrooms and surfaces, frescoes and decorations with natural ochres. The couple spent many weeks working on aspects of the house themselves and the results are stunning and quite unique. You won't have a holiday here without surprises from the moment you walk in to the garage which is like a hallway and the space opens out. Come and see for yourself. This house is their own delight.
The house is spatious and situated very close to the church in the center of Marseillan, a nice port town on the border of the Etang de Thau with medieval roots, cosy streets, shops and restaurants and a lively port. The cities/larger towns Montpellier, Béziers, Sète and Agde are close by, as are nice beaches and scenic landsscape and other attractions (le Jardin St. Adrien and Lac Salagou were our favorites this time in Languedoc).
The house has been lovingly restored and renovated with a unique and stylish touch. It offers a lot of comfort including air condition. There is all you need for your holidays and you can feel right at home. A fully equipped kitchen. A wonderful roof terrace overlooking the bell tower of the church.
Very good service from local agent and the owners, very friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay and would love to come back!
The property has been lovingly restored and beautifully decorated. It is also within convenient walking distance of shops and restaurants.
This is our second stay in this lovely house. Who would have thought such peace and tranquility were possible in the heart of this little town.It is lovely being able to walk everywhere and the beach is a short drive away. There is plenty to do and visit, alternatively doing little is such a pleasure. It is hardly surprising so many people return, I know we shall. Thank-you for making us so welcome.
Much care and attention has gone into making visitors feel comfortable. The house is beautifully decorated and equipped with everything you might need. It is in a quiet central area, close to the port. The town of Marseillan is very pretty and a good base for exploring the area. All the local people were very friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend this property.
We particularly enjoyed visiting Sète and La Camargue ornithological park. The local mussels, oysters and wines are a must.
We have enjoyed Marseillan in this wonderful house several time now. The house is decorated very esthetically and useful.
The kitchen in the upper floor provides best cooking capabilities and the large dining table nearby one have a nice look at the high wall with fantastic natural stones and the wooden roof beams. Additionally the roof terrace provides a sunny place while the Danish chimney oven provides warmth and cosiness in winter times.
The bedrooms in the first floor are comfortable and calm with the two bathrooms ‘en face’.
The bath rooms are perfect in style and usability with their white tiling up to the ceiling.
The little artful paintings on the walls spread an exceptional flair and express the love invested into the restauration!
In the ground floor a lot of space is available to store purchases, treasuries found on the beaches, and the car is kept cool in summer but at well temperature and dry in winter.
The house is really located in the heart of Marseillan with a direct view to the spire just 30 meters away. Within minutes you walk to the market place, lots of shops, and the marvelous harbor of the village.
To sum up in one short sentence: We have already booked our next stay!
Marseillan is on the inland sea 'Etang de Thau' known for it's crustacean fishery of oysters and mussels and fine fish restaurants and the point at which the Canal du Midi ends to connect to the Mediterranean through Sète. The beach stretches from Agde to Marseillan Ville and on for a further 15 kilometers on a spit of land to Sète. The marshy surroundings are home to wild birds and flamingos are often seen. It is a seaside and nature lovers destination. Marseillan lies between the busy cities of Beziers and Montpellier within reach of Spain and Provence and is readily accessible by autoroute (A9), plane (Montpellier, Nimes, Carcassonne, Perpignan, Narbonne) and rail (Agde).
Other Activities: wind surfing and sailing school at 4 kilometers.
