The Giant Mountains are a mountain range on the border between the Czech Republic and Poland. It is part of the Sudeten. The mountain owes its name to the giant Rübezahl living there
The highest mountain is the Sněžka located in the Czech Republic. This is 1603 meters above sea level. The river Elbe starts as a small stream in the Giant Mountains on the Czech side. The north side supplies its water to the Bobr that flows into the Oder. For example, the Giant Mountains can be seen as a watershed between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. It is the smallest high mountain range in Europe with a very extreme climate. This is caused by the fact that the land and sea climate often influence the high mountains simultaneously. Even the tree line is considerably lower here than in the Alps. The vegetation on the tops is characterized by alpine and subalpine vegetation. Large parts of the Giant Mountains are part of the Krkonoskí Narodní Park, whose head office is in Vrchlabí. Since the end of the nineties, the Czech part has become increasingly famous among Western tourists. In winter it is a popular winter sports area and in summer people come because of nature. Thus the bare granite tops of the many mountains are impressive. Most formations have their own, appropriate name.
Important places in the Giant Mountains are Karpacz, Szklarska Poręba (Poland), Špindlerův Mlýn, Trutnov, Vrchlabí and Harrachov (Czech Republic)
