This is a rare opportunity to sleep indoors in the Tiadaghton State Forest! This 1939 cabin was built before the forest lines were redrawn. Sleep in a piece of history! Located just a few yards off the Black Forest Trail, this is the best of all worlds.
The cabin is two levels - the lower level has a fully equipped kitchen with gas range, stove, refrigerator, toaster oven, butcher block countertops, farmhouse sink, and tons of utensils, pots, pans etc. The lower level also has a big kitchen table (great for big meals, playing cards, and staging hiking adventures) as well as a couch and gas heater.
The upper level is a loft-style bunk house with four single beds and one Queen-size Tempurpedic mattress. Upstairs has a vaulted knotty pine ceiling, bookshelves, and a big-screen TV with accompanying DVD collection for your use. Upstairs sleeps 6 easily assuming two people share the Queen bed. We provide sheets and towels, but you are welcome to use your own gear if you prefer.
There is also a great vintage stereo system with a record player (bring your vinyl) and CD player. There is also a connection for a MP3 player. There are lots of CD and records on hand (so long as you like jam bands and freedom rock).
Since we are located in the state forest, there are strict rules about running water - that is, we are not allowed to have it. We've managed to make the place quite comfortable despite this regulation. There is a composting toilet that functions like a regular toilet located on the first floor of the cabin. There is also a separate outhouse available for use. There is a spring that runs alongside the cabin that is great for collecting water for baths, washing dishes, brushing teeth etc. This water IS potable! Still, some guests prefer to bring their own jugs of filtered water. To recap: there is a toilet, but no shower or piped water. We think this adds to the rustic charm of the place.
We also love the fact that here, there is zero cell service and no chance whatsoever of internet service. The closest cell service is at Hotel Manor, 1.6 miles south, where they also have free wi-fi. At the cabin, you are truly off the grid.
The cabin has a toasty warm propane heater that operates on a thermostat. We have bikes for you to borrow. The place is also stocked with DVDs, CDs, records, books, games, pots & pans, and everything else you need to relax in this remote setting. The nearest structure of any kind is more than a mile away.
The cabin is located on Slate Run Road about 1.6 miles north of the Hotel Manor and Wolfe's General Store. The address for GPS purposes is 1627 Slate Run Road, Slate Run, PA 17769. To find the cabin, we will send detailed instructions. We are yards from the Black Forest Trail and minutes to the Pine Creek Rails to Trails. Wellsboro and the Grand Canyon are a short drive and other endless outdoor adventures beckon nearby, including world-class fly-fishing, kayaking, cross-country skiing and rock climbing.
This cabin has been part of our family for nearly 30 years. We ask that if you do choose to stay here, that you treat it with the same respect you would your own home. We are thrilled to share this piece of history - and our family's tradition - with you. Please feel free to ask any questions.
Eric Davis and Anne Marie Toccket live in Pittsburgh and visit the camp as often as time away from work allows.
Anne Marie Toccket purchased this cabin in 1990
We love this camp in the forest and the pristine waters that surround it. Eric is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys fly fishing, hunting and hiking. Anne Marie is an enthusiastic athlete who prefers the 60-mile Pine Creek Rails to Trails and running on the Black Forest Trail.
The camp is about as far from civilization as a person can get in Pennsylvania. The next structure is over a mile away. There is nothing better than going to sleep in the cabin hearing the wind in the trees and the waterfalls on Slate Run.
Very well maintained! Makes you feel at home. They typed up a nice information sheet for eating, hiking, biking and other activities. The only thing I found wrong was some of the directions are incorrect and my phone did not work at the general store, but did work if you went to the top of the mountain! Scenery is wonderful! Wildlife everywhere! So nice to not have phones ringing and texts beeping! Stayed up late-slept in late!
Had a great time getting away from it all and introducing my nephew to hiking and the great outdoors. I wouldn't have changed a thing about the cabin. I can't wait to go back.
The cabin is perfectly located in a quiet spot with a beautiful stream and extensive hiking close by. It is quaint, clean, and rustic. There is no running water, but more than enough water is supplied for drinking and washing. It is very close to an excellent restaurant/bar, as well as a general store. The owners are very helpful and provide all the information you need about the area. A perfect spot if you are looking to get away to nature without sleeping in a tent!
Close to the rails to trails. Close to a natural swimming hole. Very close to a creek and hiking trails. The cabin is very clean and well kept. For someone who has indoor allergies, I have had zero issues. Very great experience for our family.
This cabin was the perfect combination of rustic and comfortable. My husband, BFF, and I had a great time exploring the woods, chasing critters, and cooking in the cabin's ample kitchen. It's a great home base for exploring the majesty of the Penn Wilds. We hope to come back soon, and this time with bikes so we can ride the awesome Rails to Trails nearby! The owners left clear instructions and plenty of decent cookware to use, and the beds were super comfortable. A beautiful clear creek was a short walk nearby. Very highly recommended!
Close to the town but far enough away from the crowd. Fishing was fair according to the man at the fly shop. We thought it was great caught fish every time we went out.
The cabin has all the comforts of home and nicely layed out. We saw 4 bears the first day there one crossing the road and a mother and her two clubs behind the cabin.
