Enjoy the peace, quiet and beauty of all of seasons in our lovely private cottage. Our farm site including our home and the cottage sits on a creek surrounded by 40 acres of wildflowers and prairie grasses. It is located on the west central Minnesota prairie and is home to abundant wildlife. Watch the sun rise and set and enjoy campfires under star filled night skies. A great place to get away from the everyday hustle and bustle of our lives and back into the nourishing embrace of nature. The cottage is a renovated granary with a rustic look and with all the modern conveniences. The original granary floor, barn wood and antiques mix with the modern comforts and conveniences. A loft accommodates a queen size bed and the living room has a comfortable queen size sleeper sofa. A fully equipped kitchen makes cooking easy and a full bath with shower will meet all your needs. Relax on the screened in porch or inside by the cast iron fireplace. Amenities include a flat screen TV connected to Dish network, Bluetooth enabled stereo system, DVD player, microwave, a Kuerig one cup coffee maker with an assortment of teas, coffee and hot chocolate. Enjoy sitting by our meditation garden, walk the trails, watch our entertaining chickens and gather their eggs for breakfast. Starting in spring you can canoe on the creek that flows through our property and in winter enjoy ice skating and cross country skiing on it. The area is on a migratory route and is host to many birds and waterfowl. Deer walk through the yard and other wild life is frequently viewed. Especially alluring is the peace and quiet of this country respite.
We both grew up in the area and graduated from Wheaton High School in 1972. After high school we moved to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area where we lived for 30+ years and raised our family. Over the years we often spent time at Steve’s family farm. In the early 2000’s, with no one living there anymore, the farm site was becoming sadly dilapidated -- yet the land, trees and water continued to hold a great sense of peace and beauty.
We decided to buy the farm site, not quite knowing what we would do with it but wanting to preserve and restore its beauty and share it with others. We cleaned up 100 years worth of metal and junk and planted 6 acres of wildflowers and grasses to add to the hundreds of trees that were already there.
The process took several years. During that time we made weekend journeys to camp at the farm and do the work we could. We quickly found ourselves reluctant to leave at the end of the weekend. We decided to build a small home with plans to perhaps retire there.
In 2007 we moved into our new home (although we are not retired) and have been here ever since. We are so grateful every day that we are able to live here, enjoying the quiet beauty of the prairie, its sunrises and sunsets, the star filled night skies, amazing birds and wildlife, and of course our pet chickens who entertain and feed us (eggs only!)
We both have a keen interest in art. Steve graduated from University of Minnesota Morris with an art degree with a focus on sculpture and continues to explore his favorite medium. Vicky is pursuing her own interests in photography and encaustic painting (painting with pigmented wax). Our newest project on the farm is her new art studio. Vicky is also is an experienced practitioner of acupuncture and has a clinic in nearby Wheaton.
Vicky Radel purchased this cottage in 2004
Since our house is small, we realized we needed additional room for guests. We found an old granary a mile away and had it moved to our site. In the spirit of recycling, we transformed it into a beautiful guest cottage that we have decided to share with people looking for a peaceful retreat like ours. We love our decorating projects and have incorporated antiques and furniture from our parents and grandparents, barn doors from an uncle's abandoned farm 1 mile north of us and the horseshoe we found while digging the foundation. The original granary floor is refinished and a screen porch lends that relaxed country feel.
The cottage is about 200 feet from the house, where sight lines and trees maintain a sense of privacy for both buildings.
It is hard to find a truly quiet place in our busy world. A place where the city lights don't interfere with the view of the stars and a place you can find solitude if you wish. Long walks along the river (or on the river in winter) with the interplay of nature and wildlife are nourishing to the heart and soul. You can read or write a book while sitting on the porch or by the fireplace. You can watch the birds at the feeder or see water fowl at area refuges. Perhaps an eagle will fly over as you sit by the river or go out in the canoe. The deer walk through the property regularly. Whether it is a special event or a week long getaway the beauty of the prairie's big skies will greet you.
Vicki and Steve, the owners, are friendly and laid-back and have done a genius job of transforming their property into a haven of prairie wonders including chickens on site and gorgeous walking trails. The fact that they are both artists is evident!! We were lucky enough to be able to canoe on the small river running through the farm. (Canoe provided, but apparently some of the time the river's too low). The cabin is light, airy, beautifully decorated and appointed. Fresh eggs provided!
Go there if you desire peace and beauty.
Perfect. That sums it up. No pictures can describe the reality of this lush prairie landscape, its owners, the work they do every day to sustain and improve their farm, and the experience that awaits visitors willing and ready to experience the calm beauty that awaits! From the perfectly appointed tiny granary dwelling to the meandering prairie trails there for discovering, to the friendly, accommodating hosts Vicki and Steve (with their own rich stories) to the eggs delivered daily from their personable family of chickens.....well , ahhhhh, this is paradise found to a couple of gal pals needing a relaxing respite.
When can we come back? Let's make a date soon!
Also, Marbles the pug was in heaven!!!
Thank you again !!
The hospitality was wonderful sitting by the fire with a hot cup of cocoa was relaxing and enjoying it all. I would 100% recommend people staying here it is affordable and it is simply beautiful. Getting fresh eggs every morning for breakfast from the chicken coop was an amazing experience. Walking through the trails and enjoying God's country was absolutely breathtaking
In full disclosure, my friends' parents own the property, though we paid for the stay
Two nights really wasn't a long enough stay. We barely got anytime to retreat and relax :)
Cut trails to hike, bikes and canoe at your disposal, a pretty property to explore, chickens/roosters to acquaint yourself with. We barely got anytime to retreat and relax :)
Any concerns about privacy are unnecessary. You are given instructions for arrival beforehand, the cottage is blocked from the main house by trees and plants (though that may not be the case in winter), and you very well may have minimal contact with the awesome owners. We arrived to fresh chicken eggs in the fridge, and some fresh vegetables from their garden in a basket in the kitchen. And if you're a Keurig person, there had to be near a dozen different types of coffee and hot chocolate available. Full kitchen with all the gear you could need
I hope to make it back for a longer stay in winter. I'm told that in winter, the crick that runs through the property is shoveled for some ice skating, and again, plenty of trails to snowshoe
We stayed at redpath retreat for a long weekend without the kids. It was perfect! So peaceful and relaxing. We loved our time just sitting in the screened in porch listening to nature. The cottage is a perfect retreat for two. It had everything we needed to make our stay wonderful. It was very clean and cozy. There were many walking paths and a river for fishing or canoeing. We will definitely be back!
We couldn't have been happier! What a beautiful place and decorated so tastefully! We had so much fun walking and biking through the prairie along with a wonderful canoe ride. Couldn't have asked for nicer hosts or a more relaxing location. Absolutely loved it!!
