About Ian and Maureen Fairbairn
Ian was born and raised at Rough Park. Today Ian runs 2 companies, one providing film, media and training services, the other is a robotics and automation business. Ian and Maureen live in North Yorkshire with their four children.
Why Ian and Maureen Fairbairn chose Delabole
Rough Park was built sometime in the 18th century probably because it has access to good quality well water. The well and the proximity to the road meant Rough Park was a well known stopping point for travellers and in particular gypsy families. The road opposite the farm is known as Gypsy Lane and as late as the 1970’s gypsies would regularly stop to request a “kettle of sweet water.” The farm was originally part of the Boconnock Estate but along with many other farms in the area was sold off after WW1 to pay death duties. My great-grandfatherbought the farm in 1919 and it has been in the family ever since. My sister and I were born here.

We discovered this holiday accommodation by accident, and we delighted that we did! Spacious, spotlessly clean with all the necessary equipment that anyone could need. It is situated within easy reach (by car) of the local shop and public house (which supplies take away meals). People have commented on the noise from the nearby road, but we did not find this at all intrusive as the bedrooms are situated towards the rear of the house.
For those with children the outside play area, and the toys that are provided are wonderful.
Overall, an exception holiday property that the owners can feel justifiably proud of.
We loved our stay and can’t fault it. Welcomed with everything we needed and more, including the best Victoria Sandwich we’d ever tasted ( and I bake lots!). The house was so well equipped we realised how badly we stick ours at home! Lovely huge kitchen to relax in, chat, play games and eat. Very comfy beds to snuggle up in at night. A great base for exploring the area. We had a bit of trouble finding it but once we did we all said ‘ Wow - this is the best holiday house ever’ .
A kitchen you could live in ....
What a lovely house this is. Close enough to Polzeath for the beach and even closer to my favourite place Port Issac.
The kitchen is huge but warm and welcoming. The house is very quirky and it took quite a few days for our 6’3 son to start ducking as he went into the living room (low doorways)!
It is situated in such a beautiful part of North Cornwall.
The separate twin bedroom with its own bathroom and staircase is great for an older child or but I felt our daughter (13) was separate from us when it was bedtime.
I would say the house could benefit from a couple of loungers on the patio outside to relax on with a glass of whatever takes your fancy.
Great house and location, lovely house and garden. Thanks for a brilliant stay.
Wonderful accommodation - a real home from home
What a delightful place to stay - fully equipped with everything you could possibly need and well presented, we all really enjoyed our stay. The treats upon arrival were a fabulous touch and made us feel really welcome. The location was great too, close to all the best beaches like Polzeath & Daymer Bay plus we found loads of other child friendly attractions near by to keep us busy. Thank you so much for having us, we were sad to leave but hopefully we will be back!
What a gem
We loved everything about the house. It had everything we needed and very well equipped kitchen with proper cooking utensils and stainless steel cooking pots. Amazing large table and the kitchen was the vocal point of the house. The rest of the house was cosy and welcoming. Our children loved the huge garden and garden toys provided as well as other toys and puzzles in the house. We had a bbq and although next to a road, the house is actually really quiet and when in the back garden, you can only hear the cows and sheep from neighbouring fields. The coast is only a small walk away (watch out for the giant hogweed tho) and due to its perfect location, there are absolutely amazing beaches near by, so not much driving needed at all. We only wished for the week to go slower so we could stay longer and had more time to explore . Hopefully next time as we are sure to return. Maureen and Ian were super nice and very quick to respond to any enquiries. There was a delicious cake waiting for us, as well as a bottle of wine, biscuits, bottle of milk and squash for the kids! How thoughtful was that? We watched many beautiful sunsets from the house, and day dreamed of actually living in such lovely location. It was all so perfect for us, we cant wait to come back soon. Thank you.
It sounds like you had an absolutely fantastic time which is wonderful. Thank you so much for the extremely positive feedback and review. It is really nice to hear how much you appreciated the cake , wine and groceries. We would be more than happy to have you to stay again.
