Cats Pause is not your average rental home. It's special. Cats Pause is comfortable and well equipped with all the things you need to have a great relaxing stay. Cats Pause is not in a rental neighborhood. It is on a well kept flat paved road with three other homes. All the homes are on a least acre.If you walk you will probably meet our neighbors. If you need help they will help you. If you want to go to church they will take you. If you want to be left alone they will do that too. They are everything that is good about these mountains. It is private but not secluded. It is situated half way between the village of Blowing Rock (often called the jewel of the Blue Ridge Mountains) with it's great shopping and restaurants and Boone home of Appalachian State University. It is convenient for skiers as it is close to Appalachian Ski Mountain which is about six miles down the parkway. Ski Beach and Sugar Mountain slopes are also nearby. Sledding and snow tubing is also available. We are also the Christmas Tree Capital of the World. We have trees from 4 feet to 16 feet. You choose and they will cut, trim, wrap and load your very own Christmas Tree. Fresh wreaths and garlands are also available. There are also several Christmas shops.
Cats Pause is accessed from Friendship Church Road which is a paved road. A short drive down Buff Ridge Road which is also paved to Cats Pause where there is paved parking right at the door. Guest say it is in the middle of everything and away from everything. The assess to the house is up two very small steps onto the covered porch and into the house.
When you enter the house you have what guest call the WOW factor. There is a complete wall of windows which are normally called a prow. It overlooks the Blue Ridge Parkway. The layered view from here is HUGE, wide and deep. The far mountains are in Virginia. The house faces North East which give you amazing sunrises. And as unbelievable as it sounds as the sun slips behind a nearby ridge you can enjoy watching the sun set on the far out mountains. Because Pause is so far from any large cities the night skies are extra dark which make the stars appear very bright. Falling stars are wonderful to see and thunder storms are something to wish for. But back to the house. The living room it is comfortably furnished and features two recliners which rock and swivel. The flat screen features HDTV, HBO, Starz ,Cinamax, YouTube, Panadora and Showtime. You also have access to movies on demand. There is a DVD/VCR, AM/FM radio and a CD player. There is whole house U Verse. There is a stone fireplace with gas logs. The dinning room seats six. Table cloths, place mats and napkins are provided.
The kitchen is well stocked with plenty of dishes, glasses, cookware and bake ware. There is a Jenn-Air cooktop and oven. The refrigerator, dish washer, garbage disposal and ice maker are new. There is a toaster oven, mixer, crock pot, toaster, blender and coffee pot. There is a large washer and dryer in the utility room behind the kitchen. There is a ironing board and iron.
The bed room on this floor has a new king sized bed, a reading chair and lamp and a AM/FM clock radio.A bathroom is directly accessible from this bedroom. The bathroom has two doors. One leads to the bedroom and the other opens into the great room. You can close off the door to the great room and have a private bathroom for this bedroom. There is a garden tub here and the sides of the tub are high to accommodate the jets. We have installed a heavy duty grab bar and our older guest say they feel more secure with it.And I for one am glad it's there.
The access to the master bedroom is up a set of free standing stairs. There is another window wall here. You can take in the view while resting in your new king sized bed, The sunrises are spectacular. There are drapes that can be pulled for privacy or if you want to 'sleep in.' There is a flat screen here with all the features as the one downstairs. There is DVD/VCR and a AM/FM clock radio. There are two recliners that rock and swivel.
The master bath is big has a very large garden tub and a separate shower. There is a gallery wall featuring pictures of the tile walls at the Terme di Montecatine Span in Italy. Rated PG.
There is a flight of stairs to the lower level. Because we are so high on the mountain the den has the same long range views as on the main floor. There is a flatscreen here with all the features as on the main floor. There is a DVD/VCR. There is a table and chairs here. Great for cards, puzzles, a home office or just somewhere to stash the kids. We have games and puzzles for all ages. I love it when guests tell me how much they enjoyed playing games with their children. Catopoly is a favorite, It's Monopoly except with cats.
There is access to a small deck with an old fashion couples swing. Wildlife is often seen from the swing. We have deer and wild turkeys on the property.Visitors have reported a fox drinking at the bird bath. We are at Cats Pause and saw him twice this summer!! There is a bird feeder on the main level where all the mountain birds and squirrels gather. I try to keep bird seed here but if you run out they like the kind with the nuts and fruits best. Twice I have seen a flock of Indigo Buntings and once a Scarlet Tanager. Hummingbirds abound at the feeders. There is sugar and a receipt for Hummingbird Cocktail in the kitchen. If you make it they will come.
Leo's bedroom is on this floor also. It has a metal canopy queen sized bed. There is a AM/FM clock radio. There is an updated bathroom with a shower and tub. There is a glider/rocker .All the furnishings and carpet on this floor are new as we had a plumbing leak that flooded the whole floor.
A trip to the gazebo is always a good idea. Deer with fawns are often here early mornings and late afternoon. If you are quiet and still sometimes they walk right up too you. We have hung the new hammock near the gazebo making this a real destination. The best way to access this area is down Cats Pause Lane and across the back of the house.
When the day is coming to an end lounge on the large deck on the main level. Ed made the Adirondack chairs and lounger that are here and in the gazebo. In winter we have very high winds. These are heavy enough that they will not blow away. On sunny days in the winter the prow protects the deck and the chairs help you enjoy the outdoors. There is a outside dinning area and a grill under the covered porch. If it rains just pick the table up and put it on the porch.
I know that everyone thinks their mountain home is the best and we are no exception. If you read our guest book you'll see that lots of visitors agree. Be sure to sign it before you leave. Ed and I spend a lot of time keeping Cats Pause comfortable and in good repair. I am on the job making sure it is super clean. If you visit and find there was something you needed that was not there please let us know and we will try to have it for you the next time you visit. Our goal is to have something new and better every time you visit.
You will notice that we have no cleaning fee. All we ask is that you use Cats Pause gently and as if it were your own. Any excess dirt or messes left that require extra cleaning or repair will be charged a cleaning/damage fee.
The theme for Cats Pause is CATS. This will alert you that there is lots of fun cat stuff at Pause. We are sorry we cannot allow live cats to visit. But we hope you will, soon.
It's always Purrfest at Cats Pause
Ed and Mary
I'm Mary. My husband Ed and I have been living in Charlotte 22 years. We were transfured here with Ed's job. We loved it so much that when they wanted us to move he found another job. We actually built Cats Pause with lots of hands on work. It was not an easy thing but things worth having come with a cost
I am a quilter and the Quilt Block that is on the front of the house is called Puss in the Corner. Ed gave it to me for Christmas last year an I knew right away where it needed to live.
I love to cook and visit with friends so the kitchen reflects that. We don't just have just the basics but lots of things that make every meal fun.
I am a reader, especially of cat themed books so we keep lots of books, games, cards and puzzles for guests of every age.
My favorite place to read is in a hammock. We have purchased one and I am going up next week to hang it.
My very favorite thing is cats. I love shopping for new fun cat stuff. Rainy day activities for kids can include counting how many cats they can find at Cats Pause.
I used to think I wanted a Bed and Breakfast but now I know I like to give guest a nice, well equipped kitchen and let you cook your own breakfast. That way I can sleep in!
I almost always come up from Charlotte to get everything ready for you. We have lots of return visitors and folks who come every year. They have become friends as well as customers. You may find me there getting ready for your arrival. I look forward to meeting you..
Mary Louise Parks purchased this cabin in 1992
Ed and I used to own three log homes. You may have stayed with us before. Our first one was named Parks Place. It was in Misty Mountain. It was decorated with a duck theme. The second was Utter Delight it was in Heritage Ridge about a mile from Pause. You just have to know it was done in cows!! One day as I was driving to Utter Delight I saw that there was a lot for sale on Buff Ridge Rd. I couldn't believe my eyes. Why would anyone sell a lot with the most beautiful lot in the world? But they did and after much hard work and many adventures it became Cats Pause. Pictures can not do the view justice. Any time of the year you can enjoy the serene sounds of the wind through the trees and the the view from inside or outside. We even had the deck lowered so it would not interfere with the view from the main floor. As we are not as young as we once were we sold Parks Place and Utter Delight to concentrate on Cats Pause.
Cats Pause is at the end of a private road that is shared with three other homes. Guests say it is in the middle of everything and away from everything. There is almost always a cool breeze coming from the valley. Access to the Blue Ridge Parkway is less than a mile away. The parkway takes you to lots of wonderful places. Blowing Rock is about 15 min if you hurry but don't. There are three wonderful overlooks that need to be seen before you get to BR. If there is a storm in the valley it is a must see. Blowing Rock has loads of restaurants, shops a great museum and don't miss the Tanner Outlet Mall. Art In The Park is a juried art and craft show in the BR Park and all these wonderful things are for sale. Check the Chamber Of Commerse for current dates.
If you want an active vacation we have skiing, whitewater rafting, numerous hiking trails for every skill levels, kayaking, tubing, horseback riding, golf, tennis, fishing , mountain biking & ziplining . We have information about all of these at Pause.
Take the Parkway north to Grandfather Mountain. Enjoy picnicking, the mile high swinging bridge, a native wildlife area, gift shop and a underwater observation area.
Boone is about 15 minutes the other way. It is a busy collage town. All the big box stores are here and all your fast food favorites. All the big grocery stores plus the summer farmers market. It shares the Daniel Boone Native Garden with The Living History Museum where The Horn in the West, a live performance of historical events is performed in the Summer. There are tons of great things to do a little further out and all are worth the ride. Getting there is half the fun in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains,
Cat's Pause is a wonderful property, that offers a beautiful mountain view. The kitchen is large and well equipped and the deck and covered porches expand the living space and provide lovely places to relax or entertain. The location, between Blowing Rock and Boone, provides easy access to restaurants, shopping and nearby attractions, The home is in a private location, but it is not isolated. We have rented this house for many years, and find the owners to be very accommodating and hospitable. This is an outstanding vacation home where we have made many special memories!
Great time in a great house in the mountains! I recommend this place to anyone who enjoys the mountains!
Cats Pause is a lovely mountain home with beautiful views. The property is well-maintained. The owner is continually updating and I am always delighted to spot something new. This year there was a hammock available as well as a new bench on the porch. The owner strives to assure that guests feel welcome and provides excellent customer service. Little touches like having bird seed available for the bird feeder and enough coffee filters to get you started are a part of the great customer service.
When in the area we enjoy hiking, visiting local artist studios, the blue ridge parkway, and local events. In addition our adult sons enjoy rock climbing.
We highly recommend Cats Pause for a relaxing vacation.
Cat'sPaw is a beautiful very private cottage, secluded yet very convenient to both Boone and Blowing Rock. The view is magnificent with nothing but mountains in the distance.
The cabin is very well equipped with everything a person could possibably need. It is very clean. The owner was available to answer any questions.
Nearby, the nearest neighbor made you feel most welcome. When we arrived she greeted us with a beautiful arrangement of Peonies from her own garden.
Our three weeks was most enjoyable and We look forward to returning next year or maybe later this Autumn.
Upon entering Cats Pause, we were overwhelmed with the magnificent view from the front windows and the beauty of the cabin itself. We immediately felt comfortable and at home. The beds are super comfy and all the rooms are big enough to accommodate. We found that the location was close enough to many of the attractions in the area. We had a very nice tour around Boone and took a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway through Blowing Rock on to Linville Falls and later Grandfather Mountain. It was a beautiful drive that we highly recommend!
Mary was very good to us and took care of anything that we needed. She was great to give us directions around the area. We loved our stay at Cats Pause and would love to go back again!
This is our 7th year in our home away from home. Love the quiet, secluded area but close to both Blowing Rock and Boone. House is very comfortable, perfect for our annual family get together. We enjoy watching the humming birds and having breakfasts and lunches on the deck, view is amazing. Always a chance of a deer or turkey sighting.
