Mallorca, was erected in the fourteenth century, under the rule of King Jaume II to protect the inhabitants of Alcúdia. However, this was not enough to deter the pirates, who attacked the city again and again during the sixteenth century, causing the flight of large numbers of people. Today it is hard to imagine that this vibrant city ever was at risk of being totally abandoned. Fortunately, the construction of a port 1779 Alcúdia saved a decline.
